Entertainment news from around the region

Double delight for fans of Birmingham folk group Birmingham band The Conservatoire Folk Ensemble are set to release a new mini- album - on the same day that they hold their fifth Power Folk festival at Digbeth's Spotted Dog (Sunday 10 June). Sleepy Maggie + Remixes Reworkings And Rarities features a four-and-a-half-minute in- strumental and various other remixed and reimagined versions of the track. Commenting on the new record, band leader Joe Broughton said: “The idea of remixing the instrumental track, Sleepy Maggie, is very much in keeping with the group’s ap- proach to making music, of using what could be a straightforward melody as the basis for a tune and seeing how that can be developed.” For more information about the album, and Power Folk festival, visit folkensemble.co.uk

David Edgar is used to writing plays but not so used to performing in them - but that’s all about to change. The Birmingham-born playwright is marking his 70th birthday by taking to the stage in Trying It On, a new show in which he contemplates the ways in which both the world and his own views have changed during the last 50 years. Here, David writes for What’s On about his brand new production...

Company Wayne McGregor - Atomos New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham, Fri 1 & Sat 2 June Visiting Birmingham under the umbrella of the city’s international dance festival, cut- ting-edge choreographer Wayne McGregor’s Atomos sees 10 dancers presenting a per- formance that’s been described as ‘sculp- tural, rigorous, jarring and hauntingly beautiful’. McGregor is well known for his tenacious style of questioning, not only through body and mind but also across the art and science interface. This latest piece sees him atomising bodies, movement, film, sound and light into what he describes as ‘miniature shards of intense sensation’. The production is suitable for audience members aged eight and older.

Commenting on the show, the exhibition’s manager, Curtis McGlinchey, said: “Ironbridge is a remarkable place, and it’s an absolute privilege to bring the exhibition there. The show celebrates plant life in its many diverse forms, but it also helps us reflect upon our relationship with the natural world. “The importance of the intersection between nature and technology is a prominent quality shared between both Ironbridge and IGPOTY, and is one that makes the exhibition feel especially relevant at this historic location.”
