A. OUTLINE

The College is seeking to appoint a permanent part -time (up to 0.4 FTE) Prep School Co-ordinator of Bands to commence Term 1, 2021 at our Stanmore Preparatory School (Wyvern House) and Lindfield Prep Campuses. We are specifically looking for an outstanding primary band conductor.

Music in the Prep Schools is exceptionally strong with all students (K-6) involved in class lessons and choral activities. At Wyvern all students in Year 2 and Year 3 learn to play a string, woodwind brass or percussion instrument in small groups. At the Lindfield Campus, all boys in Years 2 and 3 participate in a string program, and in Years 4 and 5 they participate in a woodwind, brass and percussion program.

There are a number of co-curricular ensembles at the Prep schools including choir, concert bands, string, percussion and jazz groups. Over 340 students receive individual tuition from visiting peripatetic music staff. The current music structure has a Head of Music (Wyvern K-6); Co-ordinator of Music (Lindfield K-6); a Senior School Director of Bands (Years 7-12); a Head of Strings (Years K-12); class music teachers at Wyvern Prep (K-6) with all teachers being involved with co-curricular groups along with specialists; and over 30 visiting peripatetic instrumental teachers.

There are Three distinct elements of the brass, woodwind and percussion program in the prep schools. These elements are:

1. Conducting and developing co-curricular woodwind, brass and percussion ensembles including:

• Wyvern Winds • Wyvern Concert Band • Wyvern Training Band • Lindfield Band • Wyvern Jazz (TBC)

2. Leading, coordinating and ensuring quality of the instrumental program for brass, woodwind and percussion students.

3. Administration of programs, instrument upkeep and hire, and resources. There is an administrator to help with this process.

All candidates must have appropriate qualifications. We seek to secure a music educator who can inspire, lead and achieve outstanding music quality for this section of our music program. An ability and willingness to contribute to the pastoral care and co-curricular program will be required. All staff must be supportive of the Christian ethos of the College.

They must be a strong team player and will report to the Head of Wyvern Music and the Lindfield Prep Music Coordinator. A key aspect of the role is to work closely with the College’s Director of Bands and Head of Strings to ensure a smooth and effective transition program from the Prep schools to the Senior School.

D. CHILD PROTECTION AND FIRST AID

The successful applicant will be subject to employment screening processes with the Office of the Children’s Guardian and will be required to provide a current Working with Children registration number. In addition, teaching staff will be expected to possess a current First Aid qualification.

We have deliberately not provided set and narrow selection criteria. However, it would be expected that the successful candidate will:

• be a dynamic and successful ensemble practitioner • have a sound understanding of the learning needs of boys • engage boys in a vibrant Prep School Music education program at all levels • utilise appropriate technologies to enhance the teaching program • have appropriate tertiary Music qualifications • work effectively as a member of an enthusiastic team • have knowledge of the Orff Schulwerk and Kodaly philosophies and/or be prepared to undertake training in these approaches • show a genuine appreciation and commitment to pastoral care • embrace the learning frameworks for each campus (Lindfield – Primary Years Program; Wyvern – Building Learning Power)

G. REMUNERATION

The remuneration for this position will be set in accordance with the relevant Independent Schools Award. A pro- rata figure will apply if the role is performed on a part-time basis.
