Each sorority has different dues & charges that are outlined in the finance form on each “Chapter Spotlight” page. It is important that you fully understand the financial obligations that coincide with membership.

As members of the University of Iowa Panhellenic Council, we the undersigned agree that our vision is a safe, positive, enriching recruitment experience with the goal of providing opportunities for the greatest possible number of women to obtain membership in a women’s fraternity. In order to reach our common goal, we will strive to create a Panhellenic environment of trust, honesty, unity, and cooperation among all chapters. Therefore, we solemnly promise to: • Respect ourselves, our sisters, and the Fraternity and Sorority community as a whole. We will work with other sororities to improve the Fraternity and Sorority community. • Enable every Potential New Member an equal opportunity and act accordingly with true Panhellenic spirit as well as our own chapter values and moral judgments. • Promote the safety and protection of current and prospective members. • Treat Potential New Members with the same respect before, during, and after recruitment. • Abide by all official Panhellenic codes, including but not limited to: The Panhellenic Creed, The Potential New Member Bill of Rights, The Panhellenic Recruitment Rules, The National Panhellenic Conference Unanimous Agreements. • Leave the Potential New Member with a positive idea of what sisterhood could be. • Encourage the Potential New Member to explore the freedom of thought in her decisions. • Assure the Potential New Member about the recruitment process, membership requirements and external and internal responsibilities. • Enable every Potential New Member an equal opportunity to a level playing field. • Strive to maintain a campus scholastic average that is above the all-women’s average.
The Iowa Panhellenic Council desires to build a community that reflects diversity and inclusion within our sorority chapters. 9 POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER Bill of Rights
The right to be treated as an individual. The right to be fully informed about the recruitment process. The right to ask questions and receive true and objective answers from a Rho Gamma and members. The right to be treated with respect. The right to be treated as a capable and mature person without being patronized. The right to ask how and why and receive straight answers. The right to have and express opinions to Rho Gammas. The right to have inviolable confidentiality when sharing information with Rho Gammas. The right to make informed choices without undue pressure from others. The right to be fully informed about the binding agreements implicit in the preference card signing. The right to make one’s own choice and decision and accept full responsibility for the result of that decision. The right to have a positive, safe, and enriching experience.

11 Decoding the MRABA MRABA stands for Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement. It is the document that is signed right before final selections are made during Preference round. The MRABA is broken down into nine sections. However, the first six sections are intended for PNMs to read and understand. It is important that you fully comprehend the contract before making your final preferences. Don’t fret; we will break it down for you!
1. I am willing to accept an invitation to membership from any sorority or women’s fraternity that I list on this agreement.
• PNMs should only list the chapters they are willing to join.
2. I may limit my choices to just one OR list any sorority or women’s fraternity whose preference-round (last) event I attended, and from which I am willing to accept membership. I realize that by not listing the maximum number of events I attended, I may be limiting my potential to join any other NPC group during primary recruitment should I not be placed with my choice(s).
• A PNM can only rank chapters whose final (preference) events she attended (if she went to A and B, C isn’t an option). She doesn’t have to rank all the chapters she attended, but we encourage her to maximize her options, because it gives her a better chance of being matched to a group.
3. Once I submit this agreement to the Panhellenic Association, I cannot change the order of my preferences or add or delete a preference.
• Once the form is signed and submitted, the order of the chapter list and selections cannot be altered.
12 4. If I do not receive an invitation to membership from a group listed, I am eligible for continuous open bidding.
• If a PNM does not maximize her option and doesn’t receive a bid from a group listed on her MRABA, she can join any chapter through continuous open bidding (COB) or informal recruitment. This is only available to groups that have open spots in their chapter.
5. I have the option of not submitting an agreement at this time.
• A PNM does not have to submit an MRABA, which results in her being removed from the recruitment process.
6. Once I submit this agreement, I am bound by the National Panhellenic Conference one calendar year rule. This rule states that if through the primary membership recruitment process, I receive a bid and decline it, then I am ineligible to be pledged to another NPC fraternity on the same campus until the beginning of the next primary membership recruitment period.
• If a PNM receives a bid from a chapter she lists and then later chooses not to be pledged or initiated, she cannot join another NPC group on that campus until the next primary membership recruitment period. If she is not initiated and transfers schools, she can participate in recruitment at the first opportunity on the new campus.

Values Based Sorority Recruitment at the University of Iowa
The University of Iowa Panhellenic Council utilizes a Values Based Sorority Recruitment (VBSR) during Fall Formal Recruitment. This means that Potential New Members should choose and be placed in a chapter whose sorority values match with their own. Throughout recruitment, you will be aware of your most important values and what you look for in a sorority. Even though every sorority was founded on the same values, there are many aspects that make each sorority different from one another. Make sure to start meaningful conversations with sorority women to see if their values are important to you.
Recruitment Q & A Do I need to attend ALL of the events I have listed on my party list? YES. If you intentionally miss an event to which you were invited, you are not maximizing your options and will be released from the rest of the recruitment process. Is hazing something to be worried about? Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created, whether on or off fraternity/sorority property, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. We have a zero tolerance policy for hazing at the University of Iowa. No member is allowed to participate in any form of hazing. If you have any further concerns, do not hesitate to speak with your Rho Gamma or any of the Panhellenic Council officers.
16 What if I only want to be in a certain sorority? Being close-minded and only wanting to be a member of one specific sorority or considering only a few sororities can really limit your options of sorority membership and lead you to disappointment. Please don’t choose a sorority based on stereotypes or others’ opinions. This is your experience. So follow your heart, stay true to yourself, and you will end up in the place that is meant for you. What if I receive a bid and turn it down? If you wish to join a sorority after preference night, you will fill out a Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA) before you make your chapter selections. When you sign your MRABA, you are bound to that sorority for one calendar year. This means if you receive a bid and do not accept it, you will not be allowed to join another sorority until next Fall Formal Recruitment. Emotions can temporarily cloud judgment, so think wisely before turning down a bid card. If you decide to not join a sorority before you fill out the MRABA, you may participate in Continuous Open Bidding (COB) or choose to go through informal recruitment in the spring. What is “mutual selection”? “Mutual selection” is the process we use for formal recruitment. It means that as you go through the rounds, you're narrowing down your choices, as well as the chapters are narrowing down the amount of PNMs they are inviting back. To put things simpler: You choose them AND they choose you. All in all, the mutual selection process is there to help you and is proven to be successful. How much does it cost to be in a sorority? Being in a sorority is like all membership organizations at the University of Iowa and does require a payment of dues. This money is used to fund the operations, social events, and programming for the chapter. If the chapter you choose has a chapter house, then dues will be higher since there is a chapter facility that needs maintaining. The costs of sorority membership vary from chapter to chapter, so please refer to the individual finance forms provided on each chapter’s spotlight pages.
17 WHAT’S THE WEATHER? Lets be honest…it’s summer…in Iowa… which means it’s hot AND humid! Wear lightweight clothing in colors that won’t show sweat marks. Plan your outfits ahead of time so you know you’ll be comfortable and stress free during the long recruitment days!

18 WHAT DID SHE SAY? Be cautious of what you are saying about other sororities. You have no idea who might be offended by your opinions, so it is best to keep them to yourself. If you want to be a member of this Community, you must learn to be respectful of all sororities on campus and understand that there are amazing women in each chapter.
WHAT DO I BRING IN? You will not be allowed to bring anything but a water bottle into the chapter structures, so it is best to leave your nice purse in your room and instead bring a bag to hold all your personal items. A Rho Gamma will be stationed outside every chapter house and will look after your things while you are inside during an event.
WHAT’S BID DAY LIKE? HECTIC! With loads of fun, of course! Wear a tank top, shorts, and comfortable shoes that you can run in! Your sorority will provide a new tank that you will throw on over the one you are wearing.

Due to our continuous pursuit of Academic Excellence in the Panhellenic Council, all of our sororities have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement at or above 2.75 on a 4.0 scale for all their members to uphold. Each individual sorority determines its own minimum GPA requirement to join which may be higher than a 2.75 GPA.
