The evolution of Australian energy markets has been significant over the last decade, with change in all parts of this burgeoning industry. Disaggregation, sale, privatisation and reintegration have all featured in electricity, and exposure to international forces is now emerging via coal, gas and carbon markets.

In a group of industries where other professions dominate, actuaries have made some inroads at an individual level. This presentation summarises the current state of play in key energy sectors along with the evolution of Carbon legislation in , with its intimate links to energy production and consumption. The session also outlines the potential opportunities for Actuaries in the sector.

Andrew Burge Andrew is the Manager of Planning and Advisory Services for , a major electricity generator that owns and operates over 4,000 megawatts of coal fired, gas fired and hydroelectric power generation capacity across Queensland. Andrew qualified as an actuary in 1997 after making his first move into the wider field of retail banking, and then pursued a career in utilities sector, joining electricity retailer Energex in 1999. The subsequent move to in 2002, now merged into Stanwell Corporation, has seen Andrew work in a variety of electricity industry roles encompassing modeling, analysis and forecasting of electricity, gas and environmental markets He has also has experience in corporate strategy analysis & planning, management of Tarong Energy’s business development function including successful implementation of a number of greenhouse related projects in the compliance, technical and research and development fields all aimed at preparing Stanwell for a low carbon future in a highly competitive electricity market. Andrew has also spent time in general management roles, and more recently has taken responsibility for the formulation and management of carbon and energy efficiency strategies for Stanwell Corporation.
