André JUILLARD Blake & Mortimer Selling André JUILLARD Blake & Mortimer Selling Exhibition : « Le Serment des Cinq Lords » November 15th to December 2nd 2012 On the occasion of the publication of “The Oath of Five Lords”, the new story of Blake and Mortimer written by Yves Sente, Galerie Champaka is honoured to host, for the second time, André Juillard (after “Mezek” in April 2011). The exhibition presents the front cover, 23 original drawings, some forty sketches of panels embellished with coloured pencil, as well as four editorial productions related to the universe created by E-P Jacobs. As a geographical and emotional extra: this Master of the Clear Line was born at number 5 on the street that houses Galerie Champaka. The Original Pages Renovator of the realistic Clear Line with his series “7 Lives of the Hawk”, André Juillard takes a youthful pleasure in investing in the world of Blake and Mortimer. The black and white of his pages, both balanced and elegant, serves a solid story. With “The Oath of Five Lords,” Blake and Mortimer go back to their British origins, while Andre Juillard develops the story strip by strip in the style of American creators of the Golden Age. The Sketches One of the secrets of the Clear Line is the extraordinary richness of the pencilling. Hergé, Jacobs, and now Juillard are examples of the long road which leads to this refinement. Contemplating, side by side, the sketches and inking of “The Oath of Five Lords” reveals the two sides of the delight André Juillard takes in his drawing. A Round of Golf During a break between adventures, our two heroes offera round of “very British” sport in the sort of setting only Albion can offer. Created especially for the exhibition, this drawing has been adapted with a “stencil”, a traditional printing technique greatly appreciated by the artist for the delicate colours it permits. The Heroes’ Square In 2009, André Juillard paid tribute to the great characters of Belgian comics who Galerie Champaka lit up his childhood reading (Danny Buck, Clifton, Corentin, Gaston, etc..). He shows 27, rue Ernest Allard them wandering the streets of Brussels Flea Market. This all takes place a few B-1000 Bruxelles - Belgium blocks from Galerie Champaka.

The Sarcophagi of the Sixth Continent PART 2 BATTLE OF THE SPIRITS Script: Yves Sente Drawing: André Juillard Colour work: Madeleine DeMille Based on the characters of EDGAR P. JACOBS The authors wish to thank Mrs Jacqueline Moens de Fernig, Miss Marie-Laure Rippel, Mr Daniel Van Kerckhove, Grégoire Costa, Etienne Costa, Daniel Ceppi, Nicolas Vadot and Patrick Jusseaume for their invaluable help in the search for documentation. SUMMARY OF PART 1 Early 1958. To the future pleasure of millions of visitors, Brussels is preparing to receive delega- tions from the most prestigious countries in the world. They are coming to present their cultures, their most advanced scientific discoveries and their most audacious social projects—as part of a sumptuous Universal Exposition. It’s this international event that a third-world terrorist movement—led by a mysterious Indian emperor risen from the dead after 2,000 years—has chosen as the theatre for his first actions aimed at destabilising Western countries. Professor Philip Mortimer has been chosen by his nation to head the “British Industry” pavilion, within which Great Britain is proud to present its scientific knowledge and technological accom- plishments. Throughout the entire Exposition, the pavilion will be linked to the Halley scientific base in Antarctica. That way, visitors to the British pavilion in Brussels can discover in real time the heartbeat of the sixth continent. What Mortimer doesn’t know is that, from their secret base in Gondwana, neighbour to Halley, the terrorists are going to use the Halley-Brussels radio wave link established by the British to invade and attempt to destroy the Universal Exposition, using a deadly new type of weapon.
