THE ERROL BUDDLE STORY (PART TWO) by Eric Myers ______________________________________________________________ [The following appeared in two editions of Jazz Magazine, January/February, 1983 and May/June 1983.] At the conclusion of The Errol Buddle Story (Part One), Buddle was in the United States in 1954, leading his own quintet at Klein’s jazz club, Detroit. Other than Buddle the group included Barry Harris (piano), Pepper Adams (baritone sax), Major Holley (bass), and Elvin Jones (drums). On Saturday nights, Billy Mitchell (tenor sax) was booked for a three-way battle of the saxes. NOW READ ON… e used to get a lot of people sitting in at Klein’s,” Errol remembers , “Stan Getz used to come in some times. An unknown bass player, a young guy, used to “W come in and stand up in front of the bandstand, almost begging to sit in. His name was Paul Chambers [who later made historic recordings with Miles Davis.] I think he’d only been playing several months at that time.” Buddle remembers meeting Miles Davis himself when the trumpeter was at the Blue Bird Lounge, one of Detroit’s jazz clubs. Miles invited Errol and Don Varella up to his room, where the two Australians were fascinated to see about 40 paperbacks — all Westerns — lining the mantelpiece. They asked Miles why he liked cowboy stories. He replied: “Man, I love horses”, and explained that his father had bred horses on a ranch in the South. This was shortly before Miles Davis, in a supreme act of self-will, kicked the heroin habit. “Miles told us how he was really hooked on drugs”, says Errol, “that he didn’t dig heroin, and wanted to get off it.” One night Buddle had a choice between hearing the Stan Kenton band with Zoot Sims on tenor, or Charlie Parker, who was in Detroit for one night playing at a black dance.

“Whiskey in the Jar”: History and Transformation of a Classic Irish Song Masters Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Dana DeVlieger, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2016 Thesis Committee: Graeme M. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. By analyzing acoustic markers of Irishness, for example an Irish accent, as well as markers of other musical traditions, this study aims explores the different ways that the song has been performed and discusses the possible presence of an “Irish feel” on recordings that do not sound overtly Irish. ii Dedication Dedicated to my grandfather, Edward Blake, for instilling in our family a love of Irish music and a pride in our heritage iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Graeme Boone, for showing great and enthusiasm for this project and for offering advice and support throughout the process. I would also like to thank Johanna Devaney and Anna Gawboy for their valuable insight and ideas for future directions and ways to improve.

UNAUTHORIZED DUPLICATION IS A VIOLATION OF APPLICABLE LAWS. It’s been a while. I guess we started this project in January 2010 when Jimmy Johnson and Steve Gadd joined me and Dave O’Donnell in the barn next to my house to record some demos: bass, drums & guitar. None of these tracks had any lyrics; I whistled the melody. I took 2013 off, more or less, to write but it wasn’t until September, with deadlines looming, that I really got down to it. These days, life is full and lyric writing needs empty time, so the only thing for it was to borrow Bee & Val’s place in Newport for a week at a time; thanks, guys. After a few quiet days, the songs started to come through. I walked around town, I rowed around the harbor and I cooked my meals with one call to home at dinnertime. I had a different notebook for each song; written down on the right page and edited on the left. Bits of lyrics on napkins, and envelopes and little scraps of music recorded on my phone… In January 2014, I brought the band — Jimmy Johnson, Bass; Larry Goldings, Pianos; Mike Landau, Guitars and Steve Gadd, Drums — to our home, where Ellyn Kusmin and Dave O’Donnell had transformed the barn into a studio, “aqueduct for our porpoises”… Ralph and JP came down from Vermont to help set us up and we got started.

  • Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi- Cultural Tonality
Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi- Cultural Tonality By Carlo Estolano Commentaries for the PhD folio of compositions University of York Music December 2017 2 3 Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi-Cultural Tonality Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of a PhD degree in Music at The University of York, December 2018 by Carlo Estolano. Abstract This folio is conceived to propose and demonstrate music realisation of original compositions throughout the employment of elements of mainly two distinct sources: a selection from the wide palette of Brazilian folk styles that have improvisation as a strong element, which is internationally acknowledged as Brazilian Jazz; and its intersections with a certain style of European Jazz represented by artists notable by their keenness to combine elements from distinct musical genres with their Classical background, such as Ralph Towner, Jan Garbarek, John Abercrombie, Eberhard Weber, Kenny Wheeler, Terje Rypdal, Keith Jarrett to name a few. Both Brazilian and European approaches to Jazz seem to share processes of appropriation of foreign musical languages, as well as utilising characteristic features of their own traditions. Another common ground is their relation with some elements and procedures of classical music.
