Happy New Year!

One of the symbols of the secular new year is a little baby, diapered and holding a rattle, symbolizing all the potential of the coming year. Children represent potential in Jewish texts, as well. In a collection of midrashim known as Midrash Rabbah, God asks the Israelites gathered at Mount Sinai to offer a guarantor for the gift of Torah they are about to receive. They offer their ancestors. God refuses them. They offer the prophets. God refuses them. They offer their children, and God says, “Yes, they are good guarantors. For the sake of your children I will give you Torah.” Knowing that children are not too set in their ways, God understands that our children, learning from Torah, will fill it with meaning that defies the current understanding. They will bring it to heights that we parents cannot imagine and hopefully love it enough to pass it on, in turn, to their children.

You are probably aware that working with youth is one of my passions. I have been active with NFTY for years, as well as our camping movement and high school programs, both local and national.

For the past 5 years I have been keeping tabs on a particular group of children who have a great deal of potential. They are creative, intelligent, energetic, fun, and they seem to genuinely care about one another. I have been predicting that they are the leaders who will bring BTZY back into the region as a strong and active youth group. Last month, they began to prove me right. At our Chanukah Lock-In, some of our BTZY kids sat around the table discussing what roles they wanted as leaders of their youth group. So it is with great pleasure that I announce the first BTZY Board of my tenure as CBT’s rabbi:

President Gabriel Young Programming Vice President (PVP) Nicholas Matusoff Social Action Vice President (SAVP) Ava Orsbern Religious and Cultural Vice President (RCVP) Jonas Holdaway Membership Vice President (MVP) Kiki Lothian Communications Vice President (CVP) Aubrie Ofner

They are not the only leaders among their peers. Many others have been very helpful with ideas they would like to see come to fruition, and since they are all 8th and 9th graders, they will serve in these roles until May 2020. Next winter we will elect their successors, and from that point they will serve one-year terms, but for the first go-around I wanted to give them a little time for the learning curve, and a chance to get the fly wheel moving for the next group to take over.

Like the new year, this group is full of potential. I hope they are as excited as I am to get started, and I am confident they will do great things for BTZY, for CBT, and for the Jewish community.

24 Tevet — 25 Shevat 5779 January 2019

You might think it would be easy to explain your values to someone, but if you were limited to just a few, it might prove more challenging. This past year, the board made a goal to create a CBT Values Statement that represents us succinctly, be easy to understand, and inform the community what we stand for that makes us unique. But how to narrow them down? Our stated values should inform our choices and act as a moral compass when faced with challenges and tough decisions. It’s not as easy as it sounds, and the board decided it required the input of our entire congregation.

The results are in! Earlier this year, nearly 100 congregants participated in a survey about the values we hold dear at CBT. The ballot contained 30 or more different options that all could have been true for us to some degree, but the idea was to rank their relative importance to our congregation and narrow them down to the most fundamental. Our initial analysis was that eight or nine of the values were far and away the most meaningful to our congregants, but that was still too many, so we combined several similar ones into just three that encapsulated all of them and would truly represent us. The board has determined that the three below are the most appropriate way to describe our values at CBT based on your input:

Talmud Torah (Lifelong Learning), Kehillah Kedoshah (Holy Community) and Tikkun Olam (Social Action)

Talmud Torah – this literally means “Study of Torah,” but in a broader sense represents lifelong learning. At CBT, we encourage and promote continuous study throughout our congregants’ lives and strive to offer learning opportunities to congregants of all ages. It also means considering the lessons of the Torah in our modern world and applying them to create relevancy today. In Jewish education, this is sometimes referred to as “womb-to-tomb” programming. This value is at the forefront of our clergy’s and lay leadership’s agendas as we plan and grow.

Kehillah Kedoshah – Holy Community. This value includes the notion of welcoming the stranger, treasuring the contribution of each person, outreach to interfaith couples and the wider faith community, inclusiveness of people’s differences, openness to various ways of thought, facilities that accommodate special needs, and more. We don’t want this to just be lip-service. This value is critical to us and must guide our way of life.

Tikkun Olam – this translates to “Repairing the World,” but it has become a wider movement of Social Action. Jews everywhere, and especially at B’nai Tzedek where our name means A People Committed to Justice, get involved. We care for others, we speak out, we march, we donate, we work, we give our time and energy, we write letters, we campaign, we assist. We can accomplish this in large and small ways, sometimes just by the kindness of one congregant to another, and sometimes by gathering as a group to bring about real change in the world.

We plan to incorporate these values in a written manner in our building, on our website, and in other materials in the months to come, so be on the lookout. Thank you for sharing your feelings with us and being part of the development of this important statement about our values.

L’shalom,

Shellie Halprin

Cantorial Corner The new calendar year brings with it a number of wonderful opportunities. This month, I am particularly excited to begin working on a new series of cantorial classes, including Jewish History and Advanced Tefillah. I look forward to gaining new knowledge of our history as well as new melodies and skills to bring into my work at CBT.

I am also thrilled to welcome Shir Appeal, Tufts University’s only mixed-gender, Jewish a cappella group, to CBT on January 5 at 6:30 PM. I am honored to be at a synagogue that so openly embraces opportunities for musical experiences and can’t wait to see what this wonderful group has in store for us!

24 Tevet — 25 Shevat 5779 January 2019 Sister to Sister

Tu B’Shevat: Mark your calendar for Sisterhood’s Tu B’Shevat Seder on January 20 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. This year we changed the name to honor Barbara Stein, who organized the event for 18 years in honor of her mother, Harriette Herman. This will be the first annual Barbara Stein Harriette Herman Memorial Tu B’shevat Seder. Led by cantorial soloist Jenna Sagan, we will partake of the seven species of fruits and nuts mentioned in the Torah: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. We will also drink four cups of wine, representing the four seasons. Please bring canned fruit or dried fruit or nuts for the needy, along with a dairy dish to share. Food assignments are based on the first initial of your last name: A-F: salad; G-P: main dish; Q-Z: dessert. Chanukah celebration: Heather Miller had a full house for the Sisterhood Chanukah party. The buffet table was groaning with delicious food – and most of us were groaning after eating our fill! The conversation was lively, and the gift exchange included a variety of creative and well-thought-out items. Myrna Capsuto picked a few of the most sought after items – three different times! Each time, someone stole the gift away. A homemade tote bag, warm throw blanket, lemon fragrance body wash, and various gift cards were among the most desired objects among the crowd gathered in Heather’s living room. Got a suggestion? Sisterhood board meetings are typically held the first Sunday of the month at 10:00 AM. We welcome visitors and your ideas for upcoming events.

CBT is hosting California Jews on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 7:00 PM. There is no cost to attend and no RSVP is necessary.

California Jews, Brandeis University Press. “If you want to be poor all your life,” an eastern European Jewish immigrant was told, “go to New York. If you want to be rich, go to the other side,” meaning California, where economic prosperity and social acceptance promised Golden State Jews opportunities unknown in the East. For many new Jewish immigrants, California became the new promised land, even as it challenged many New York-centered assumptions about American Jewish life. Whether you are native to California, New York, or anywhere in between, come hear a provocative talk that just might undo the way you think about American Jewry.
