March 7 Tournament Quarterfinals TBA MOUNTAIN HAWKS LOOK FOR WEEKEND SWEEP OF LEOPARDS 11 Semifinals TBA On Saturday, it will be 299 days since the Lehigh women’s basketball team last took the court against Colgate in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. 14 Championship TBA It’s been a long spring, summer and fall but the season is finally here as the Mountain Hawks open the 2020-21 campaign with a home-and- home against rival Lafayette. Lehigh is looking to start the season 2-0 for the third straight year.

This year looks a little bit different with only 16 games being played and the 10 teams in the Patriot League split up into three mini-conferences. Home team in BOLD CAPS Lehigh and Lafayette join Bucknell in the Central mini-conference. This year, only the top eight teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the Patriot League Tournament instead of the traditional 10. ^Mini-conference game Lehigh loses six players to graduation from last season including three starters (Camryn Buhr, Hannah Hedstrom and Cameryn Benz). The biggest loss to the offense is Buhr, the three-time All-Patriot League selection, who is the only player in program history with 1,300+ points, 700+ rebounds and 230+ assists.

The Mountain Hawks return two players from the starting lineup a year ago, Megan Walker and Emma Grothaus and return eight letter winners in total including senior captains Mariah Sexe and Mary Clougherty. Despite the loss of Buhr, who led the team in points the last two seasons and rebounds the last three, Grothaus averaged 10.2 points per game in 2019-20 and averaged 6.1 boards as well, second and SPORTS COMMUNICATIONS third on team, respectively.

On one hand, the Mountain Hawks look brand new with the loss of six players to graduation and the addition of six fresh faces to make up the Class of 2024. On the other hand, it’s a new world we live in, in the middle of a global pandemic which started a mind-blowing 10 months ago right when the team was ready to embark on a Patriot League semifinal matchup at Boston University.

Picked fourth in the Patriot League preseason poll, it’s a new slate, a new perspective and a new mentality heading into New Year for the Mountain Hawks.

For Lehigh, resiliency and adaptability are the two themes that head coach Sue Troyan, entering her 26th season, has identified heading into the new slate.

“With everything going on, it’s a different mindset as you approach the year and we’ve talked since the summer the importance of resilience and adaptability going into the season,” said Troyan. “Those two words have definitely come up over and over through the fall for us. At this point, you take each day as a gift because you don’t know what tomorrow might bring with what we’re dealing with and there’s been a lot of changes to practices and protocols.

“I’m most proud of how our team’s adapted daily to the changes and its not been easy. They’ve had to sacrifice and give up a lot to do this, but I’m really proud of how they’ve responded going through some really tough situations already.”

The challenges will come up throughout the season as the world continues to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic with cases spiking and vaccines being introduced. However, it will be how teams handle the adversity, a term brought up by Troyan a lot in this preview, that will be the difference-maker in how they achieve success. Looking Back on 2019-20

The Mountain Hawks had an ebb-and-flow kind of season last year, starting the season out hot with a 5-0 record including a statement victory over Big East opponent Seton Hall at Stabler Arena, and after the team went 8-3 in non-league play, the season seemed to get harder once Patriot League play began and ended.

Lehigh went 10-8 in Patriot League contests last season and entered the tournament with a six seed, but as the saying goes “It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish.”

The Mountain Hawks were playing their best basketball in the tail end of the year, winning their final three games including two road victories over Colgate, advancing to the Patriot League semifinals to face Boston U. before the shutdown.

“I don’t like to live in the past very much, it was what it was. But I think the frustrating part for all of our kids was that we played really well at the beginning of the season, went through some ups and downs mid-way through the Patriot League season, but figured it out and put it all to- gether at the end,” Troyan said. “The girls got in that mental state and accepted roles and knew what was at stake and were willing to sacrifice whatever it took to win. They came together in those last two or three weeks and were by far playing our best basketball, our most confident basketball and being led by six seniors that just wanted to win and were willing to do whatever it took to win.

“At that point in the season, I think we would have been a tough out for any team to go up against.” Guards

Like most teams around the country in this day and age of college basketball, Lehigh will be a guard-oriented team for the upcoming season, with six returning players from last year’s roster that have the ability to play the 1 or the 2 and five incoming freshmen as well.

The Mountain Hawks lose two of the program’s most prolific guards in program history in Camryn Buhr and Hannah Hedstrom, who combined for over 1,800 career points, 1,300 rebounds and nearly 650 assists in four years.

But one of the cool things about these particular group of guards on the current team is now is their time to shine on the court and take over for the women that played ahead of them for the last three or four years.

Lehigh Sports Communications | 641 Taylor Street, Bethlehem, Pa. | Phone 610-758-3174 | www.lehighsports.com 2020-21 LEHIGH WOMEN’S BASKETBALL | GAME 2: LAFAYETTE | PAGE 5

“It’s interesting, as talented as our senior class was last season, I just though the kids behind them were just as talented and were just waiting for their opportunity to shine,” Troyan said. “Just look at this current group, they’re all kids that played in the shadows of a senior class that had been three or four year starters and were just a part of the rotation, knowing their place on the team.

“Not to discredit what Camryn (Buhr), Hannah (Hedstrom), Gena Grundhoffer and Cameryn Benz did in their careers, as they were all great players. But this group has a lot to prove heading into the season.”

While there’s a depth at each particular position, junior Clair Steele and sophomore Anna Harvey will both be battling for time at point guard. Steele has seen promise at the position over the last two seasons, averaging 3.7 points and 1.2 assists per game in 2019-20, appearing in 29 games off the bench as the backup behind Hedstrom. Harvey didn’t play as much in a very deep rotation a season ago, but still found herself playing 16 games off the bench. Both players have been working hard in the preseason to get ready for the start of the year.

“Clair has had a great preseason for us and has been playing at a high level and I’m super excited for her as our point guard,” said Troyan. “She’s been playing great offensively, defensively and has really great court sense. She is being pushed by Anna and I think the combination of both of them are just going to give us great point guard play.”

Junior Megan Walker is one of the program’s returning starters from last season and will find herself in a very similar role. She made a start in 29 of the team’s 30 games last season and was incredibly efficient from beyond-the-arc, leading the team with a 37.8 percent 3-point percentage, with 45 shots made from deep. With an average of 40.4 percent from the field, Walker finished fourth on the team in scoring averaging 7.2 points per game. She enters her junior season with 61 made 3-point field goals.

“Megan is playing as good as anyone right now,” Troyan said. “She’s a kid that who is able to shoot the ball incredibly well. If I needed to pick someone for a pickup 5-on-5 game, I would want her on my team because she’ll set a great screen for you, she’ll defend for you, shoot the open shot and plays really tough basketball.”

Katie Rice also is entering her junior campaign and played great defensively throughout last season. Rice brings a ton of leadership and toughness to the lineup, traits needed for any team looking to win a championship. In 28 games last season, she had 10 steals in 8.8 minutes per game off the bench.

“Katie brings the toughness to our team honestly. She has the toughness, the leadership and the basketball mind and grittiness,” said Troyan. “Katie is a kid that will play a lot of 4-guard rotations this season because of the system we’re playing and Katie will be there playing a 2, 3 and 4 for us.”

While technically classified as a wing, being able to play at both guard and forward, sophomore Frannie Hottinger is one player that showed flashes of potential in parts of last season. She appeared in 27 games a season ago off the bench and collected 43 boards while averaging 7.7 minutes per contest. She scored a career-high 16 points against Bloomsburg and had back-to-back eight-point outings vs. American (1/29) and Army West Point (2/1). She will see a much bigger role in the rotation of the team in 2020-21.

“Frannie is one at the wing that is really stepping up her game just this year,” Troyan said. “She was a proven scorer in high school, scoring over 2,000 points so she’s a bucket when she gets the ball. She’s learning the offense and is just a kid that can really score for us.”

And who could forget about senior co-captain Mary Clougherty, who came on as one of the most valuable assets for the Mountain Hawks at the end of last season, as the team made a push towards a Patriot League title before the season was shut down due to the pandemic.

Clougherty was super-sub for the Mountain Hawks last season averaging 14.7 minutes in all 30 contests. She averaged 7.2 points per game and finished second in 3-pointers made with 43, shooting 34.1 percent from beyond and 39.1 percent from the field. Her career-high 24-point effort sparked Lehigh to victory at Army West Point (2/1), just days after the tragic death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna. She also scored 23 points on the road in the regular season finale at Colgate (3/4).

“Mary, playing at the wing for us, is just playing at an exceptionally high level right now,” said Troyan. “She had games at the end of last season where she really, really shined. I think you’re going to see her elevate her game this season as well.” Forwards

It will be an interesting year for Lehigh’s frontcourt, with only two returning pure forwards this season in junior Emma Grothaus and senior Mariah Sexe.

The only other pure forward listed on the roster is freshman Jackie Vargas, but she will be unavailable for the upcoming season.

Lehigh Sports Communications | 641 Taylor Street, Bethlehem, Pa. | Phone 610-758-3174 | www.lehighsports.com 2020-21 LEHIGH WOMEN’S BASKETBALL | GAME 2: LAFAYETTE | PAGE 6

There are three players, Jamie Behar, Hottinger and Maggie Brown listed as wing players who have the ability to play in the post, but only Grothaus and Sexe are listed to play strictly at the 4 or 5.

Grothaus was excellent in 2019-20, coming into this season as the program’s leading scorer from a year before, where she averaged 10.2 points per game and 6.1 rebounds while making 12 starts in 30 appearances for the Mountain Hawks. She shot 40.1 percent from the field and was a 70.1 percent free throw shooter. Coming into her junior season, Grothaus currently sits at 500 career points and 325 career rebounds in 61 career outings.

Sexe also saw time in the starting lineup a year ago with 15 starts in 30 games played. She averaged 4.5 points per game while seeing action in 14.3 minutes per contest. Sexe shot 50 percent (56-for-112) from the field and grabbed 84 rebounds.

“The player that is going to open some eyes this season is Mariah,” said Troyan. “Both Mariah and Emma are playing at a high level. Mariah has played behind Cameryn (Benz), Gena (Grundhoffer) and Meagan Eripret the last three years and was always willing to play her role. But there were six post players in that rotation and she literally fought for time between those players. I’m really excited for both Emma and Mariah, going from a bunch of post players in our rotation to two at this moment. “We are going to be guard oriented but we have lineups where we can be flexible in playing Emma and Mariah together or apart. They both have played very well in practice so far this preseason and I think they’re excited to show people what they’re capable of doing because there’s a lot there from both of them.” The Freshman Class

Last season’s graduating class, which included five seniors and a graduate student was the program’s largest senior class in recent memory. This year, however, the six players entering the Class of 2024 is the program’s largest in at least the last 20 years and perhaps the most in the scholarship era.

There are three guards (Maddie Albrecht, Fabienne Eggenschwiler, Mackenzie Kramer), two wings (Jamie Behar and Maggie Brown) and a forward/center combo player (Jackie Vargas). And all are players that do multiple things well and will help the rotation of the team thrive.

“It’s definitely a large class. There’s a lot of depth that our freshmen bring in,” Troyan said. “We talked a lot to our team about the importance this year in playing back-to-back games and depth is going to be very important to a team’s success this season. I’m really excited about this particular incoming class because they really add a ton of depth to our rotation and to what we do on the court. With this group, we’ll have a rotation that I think will go 10-11 deep if we need to. That’s going to be important with the changing environments each week. This is a really talented group of girls that will be able to put points on the board for us.”

Kramer was a talented scorer in high school at Saint Michael Albertville, notching 1,749 career points, an all-time record and holds school records for career 3-pointers (330), 3-pointers in a game (9), 3-pointers in a season (104), single season free throw percentage (90.2 percent), single season scoring (556) and single-season 3-point percentage (54.5 percent). She has a knack for shooting the long range ball and will be a threat every time she gets the ball in her hands.

“As a point guard or combo guard, Kramer is going to be someone who can score the ball for us, add depth to our guard rotation, add depth to our wing rotation and a kid that knows the game really well,” said Troyan. “She plays the game really well and will fit into our motion offense. Mackenzie will be someone that will be a lot of fun to play with and someone that will be a joy to watch as well.”

Similarly to Kramer, Jamie Behar is a player that can also shoot the ball exceptionally well. She had a fantastic high school career, with over 1,700 career points in her career between a season at Long Island Lutheran and Oceanside.

“Jamie is another one that can be a scorer for us,” Troyan said. “She comes from a great high school program at LuHi and is another player that can stretch the floor with her ability to shoot 3-pointers, gives us versatility, play a post position and play a wing position.”

Another player with a high ceiling, Maddie Albrecht brings a ton of promise and potential to the Mountain Hawks in 2020-21. The first player in program history hailing from the state of Montana, Albrecht not only was a fierce competitor on the basketball court, but she also lettered in Track, was named to the All-State team three times and was a part of the 4x100 relay team that won a state title twice.

“Maddie is probably one that benefitted the most this fall. Four of our freshmen had to sit out the first couple weeks due to COVID exposure, so they were put into quarantine,” Troyan said. “Maddie was the one that was not a part of that group, so she benefitted from being around nine upperclassmen for three weeks. I told her that for her personal development, that was one of the best things that could happen. Instead of us correcting six freshmen on the floor, we were only correcting one, so she got a lot of coaching, but she also got to work with a veteran group and I think it’s been pretty cool to see her development.

I go back to Erica Prosser when she was at Lehigh and was a two-time Patriot League Player of the Year because she was an elite athlete at this level. Maddie has a big, big upside that as she grows into understanding the game and learns more, she’ll continue to do a great job there for us.”

Other than those three players, Maggie Brown and Fabienne Eggenschwiler are two players that missed time in the preseason due to a mixture of injury and exposure to the virus, but will bring a lot of depth to the team’s rotation for the rest of the season. Brown scored over 1,300 points and grabbed nearly 600 rebounds in a four-year career at Brentwood Academy, while Eggenschwiler has international experience having played for the U18 Swiss National Team in 2018.

“Maggie and Fabienne are two girls that as they get more time under their belts in practice, they will be able to help us down the road in terms of helping our rotation,” Troyan said. Working with a new schedule

The intriguing thing about the upcoming season is the way the schedule is structured with 16 games against all teams except Army West Point, Boston University and Navy and are all back-to-back games against the same opponents on weekends.

The Mountain Hawks are placed in a central “mini-conference” with rivals Bucknell and Lafayette, playing four games each against those teams this season. Only the top eight of the Patriot League’s 10 schools will qualify for the tournament at season’s end.

For a league that is used to playing just one game per weekend, an occasional weekday game but always with a break between contests, this will be a much different look but a challenge Lehigh is certainly up for, especially with game-planning and scouting teams ahead of time.

“We have the benefit of having Addie Micir on our coaching staff, who played at Princeton, coached there and Dartmouth, so she’s already been in the model as both a player and coach of playing back-to-back games because in the , they traditionally play on Fridays and Saturdays,” Troyan said. “We talked a lot about our gameplan on what a week will look like. A little different when you’re playing the same opponent so you can actually cut back on how much you do during the week, but with the way the schedule is laid out, you aren’t scouting and prepping for two games, you’re only doing it for one.

“We’re going to be really strategic in terms of how we approach each day, making sure the focus of everything is that we’re peaking on Satur- day and Sunday to play our best, not overdoing it and it really helps to have someone like Addie to run things off of and get feedback from.”

With only 16 games to play, eight of which are against teams that the Mountain Hawks struggled with a season ago (two losses to Bucknell, a series split with Lafayette), every game is more important than ever before and the margin for error is much smaller.

“The back-to-back games against the same opponent is going to be an interesting component of it and going on the road and coming back home in the same weekend too,” said Troyan “I look at it as everyone is in the same boat, we’re all going to have the same challenges in front of us. We’re just grateful that we have the opportunity to play at the end of the day.” Key for Success

Every program has one or two things they really look at when trying to find ways to be successful. Some are made for offense, some for de- fense, but for the Mountain Hawks their focus in this unique time is on teamwork and playing with one another to the best of their ability.

“I think the big focus this year is to stay together,” Troyan said. “There’s going to be challenges, whether it’s a loss or a week shutdown, there are going to be things that will come up that will be challenging. For us, it’s going to be “how do you respond when adversity hits?” Adversity is going to hit, one way or another, it’s just a matter of how we handle it.

“In these weeks leading up to the season, we’ve had maybe two or three weeks of full practice with our full roster. With that being said, I am very proud how everyone has responded in these unique situations.”

In order to win a Patriot League Championship, which is without a doubt this particular team’s main goal, the team must “stay together” and pursue the common goal at the same time. Lehigh looks like it has what it takes to accomplish that this year.

Playing for the first time in 299 days and using an 11-2 run in the final 3:55 of the contest, the Lehigh women’s basketball started the 2020-21 campaign on a high note, an 81-75 victory over archrival Lafayette on the road in overtime.

Four Mountain Hawks finished in double scoring figures led by senior guard Mary Clougherty who finished just a point shy of a career-high with 23 points. The season-opening win, the third straight for Lehigh, ups its record to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Central mini-conference.

Lehigh took an early 2-0 lead thanks to a layup by sophomore Frannie Hottinger, but it was all Leopards in the first part of the frame, leading 9-4 with 3:42 to play in the quarter. With under a minute left, junior Emma Grothaus converted on a shot in the paint to give the Mountain Hawks a 12-11 lead, their only lead of the game until the late stages of the contest. Hottinger hit a shot at the first quarter buzzer to tie the game at 14.

The Mountain Hawks continued the back-and-forth affair with the Leopards into the second quarter and while they were able to keep things close throughout, they were unable to re-take the lead. 3-pointers by Clougherty and Grothaus had Lehigh in business, but trailing Lafayette 36-31 at the half.

Lehigh got the scoring started first in the third quarter off a layup from senior forward Mariah Sexe, cutting the deficit to three points. The Leopards took their largest lead of the game after a layup with 6:15 to play in the frame, a nine-point, 44-35 advantage. Three straight baskets, all from Grothaus, had Lehigh trailing by only four points with 5:25 to play.

With 1:44 to go, Grothaus fed the pretty pass to freshman guard Maddie Albrecht for her first career points, cutting the Lafayette lead back down to three points. Another freshman made her mark early, as Mackenzie Kramer was fouled behind the arc with six seconds left on the clock. She converted on all three shots from the foul line, to cut the Leopards’ lead down to 54-50 heading into the final regulation period. Who else but Clougherty would give the Mountain Hawks their first lead of the game since the first quarter, as she laid the ball in with 6:27 left in the fourth to give Lehigh a 57-56 advantage. With a tie ballgame at 57, Hottinger converted on one of the biggest shots of her life, a 3-pointer with 5:32 left, as Lehigh took a three-point lead over the Leopards.

It seemed that Lafayette was going to take control of the game late in the fourth quarter after free throws put them up six with 2:27 left, but the Mountain Hawks would not be denied after two successful free throws by Hottinger and junior Clair Steele who had one of the plays of the game, a steal on the defensive end and a three-point play on the offensive end to cut Lafayette’s lead back to 66-65. Clougherty swished a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to tie the game at 68, which would be the score at the end of regulation, as the two teams got ready to head to overtime together for the first time since 1998. Lehigh was going to OT for the first time since beating Merrimack on the road, 72-68 last season.

Lafayette got off and running with a made 3-pointer with 4:37 to play, but Steele’s jumper with a 4:16 left made it a one-point game again.

From that point forward, it became the Mary Clougherty show, as the senior notched five points in under a minute off a 3-pointer and jumper in the paint to give the Mountain Hawks a 77-75 lead with 1:30 left. Great defense from Lehigh allowed the offense to continue to get the ball back to the point of Lafayette fouling, as junior Megan Walker converted on three free throws to ice the game, securing the six-point come-from-behind victory.

As mentioned before, Clougherty led all Lehigh scorers with 23 points, adding five rebounds and four assists. She finished with five 3-pointers, also leading her teammates. Three other Lehigh players scored in double figures with Grothaus (15), Steele (a career-high 15) and Hottinger (13).

Grothaus also added six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals to her stat-line, while Hottinger recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.

Steele was a defensive nightmare for Lafayette with four steals on the afternoon, to go along with her career-high day for points, three assists and three boards.

At the end of the day, Lehigh’s defense pulled through, forcing 27 Lafayette turnovers, including seven from Preseason Player of the Year Natalie Kucowski, who finished with 16 points and 21 rebounds.

Lehigh shot 35.5 percent (27-for-76) from the field and 24.3 percent (9-for-37) from beyond, but it was late in the game where it mattered most as the Mountain Hawks still managed to come out victorious. That, and converted late foul shots, where Lehigh shot 78.3 percent (18-for-23) from the free throw line.

Lehigh’s bench out-scored Lafayette, 31-17 with 33 points off turnovers, 17 second chance points and 15 points off fast breaks. The lead changed six times and was tied nine times.

SUE TROYAN Head Coach - 26th Season Lehigh head women’s basketball coach Sue Troyan is certainly no stranger to winning. Entering her 26th season in 2020-21 with a career record of 401-344, and a 200-166 mark in Patriot League play, she has helped lead the Mountain Hawks to three Patriot League Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Mountain Hawks have made it to the Patriot League semifinals in 10 of the last 14 seasons, while making four appearances in the finals and capturing two league titles during that stretch.

Lehigh once again reached the semifinal round in the 2019-20 season, earning the six seed after a 19-11 overall record and a 10-8 mark in Patriot League play. The Mountain Hawks took down Colgate in the quarterfinal round for the second straight year. The sudden COVID-19 pandemic ended the season prematurely despite Lehigh making the semifinal round for the second consecutive year. Camryn Buhr earned her way to a Second Team All-Patriot League selection, her third straight appearance on an all- league squad. Under Troyan, Buhr and Hannah Hedstrom were Academic All-Patriot League selections, while the latter was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 selection for the second year in a row.

During the 2018-19 season, the Mountain Hawks made their way back to the Patriot League semifinals under Troyan’s direction, and at 21-10 overall and 12-6 in Patriot League play, finished with the team’s first 20-win season since 2010-11 and finished in third place, the team’s highest standing since the 2011-12 campaign.

The 2017-18 team returned to the Patriot League quarterfinals, behind a pair of All-Patriot League selec- tions in third team honoree Camryn Buhr and second team selection Quinci Mann, who graduated as the program’s sixth all-time leading scorer, and third on the school’s all-time three-point list.

The 2015-16 team finished 18-13 overall and 10-8 in Patriot League play. Four Mountain Hawks earned All-League honors, including standout Lexi Martins who was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and finished as the nation’s leader in double-doubles and ranked third in the country in rebounding.

Under Troyan’s guidance in 2014-15, the Mountain Hawks made their first Patriot League Championship appearance since 2010. Lehigh finished the season with a 19-11 overall record and a 9-9 league mark. The Mountain Hawks earned the six seed in the Patriot League Tournament and picked up road wins at No. 3 Holy Cross and No. 2 Army to advance to the championship. Four Mountain Hawks garnered All-Patriot League honors, while Lehigh was also represented on the Academic All-League team and landed a league-best number of players on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

In 2010-11, Troyan led the Mountain Hawks to their third-straight Patriot League regular season title and Lehigh’s third-straight 20-win season, the most con- secutive 20-win seasons in program history. The Mountain Hawks went 21-11 which included a WNIT berth for their third straight postseason appearance.

In the previous two seasons, Troyan led Lehigh to a combined 55-11 (25-3 PL) record which included a pair of Patriot League Championships and NCAA Tour- nament berths.

The 2009-10 campaign brought Troyan’s third Patriot League title, the team’s second in a row, and second-ever Patriot League regular season title with a league record of 13-1, earning the Mountain Hawks the top seed in the tournament. Lehigh advanced to their third NCAA Tournament in school history, finishing the season with a 29-4 record. For the second season, Lehigh went undefeated at home, breaking the record set the previous year for most wins in a season (29) and league wins (13).

In 2009, Troyan won her second Patriot League title, capping off a historic season in which the Mountain Hawks broke school records in wins (26), league wins (12) and home wins (17).
