Father Joe’s Notes My dear friends,

Well, the first week of merged parishes has come and gone. Some things went smoothly, and others were a bit bumpy. It will take some time to get used to the new schedule and how best to navigate between the churches to arrive quickly and safely! While there were some glitches and confusions here and there, it went fine. At least people have been most gracious and helpful, and that goes a long way.

There is something to be said for being kind and gracious. Some people may be brilliant or exceedingly talented in some field, but if they lack courtesy, who will know or care? Some people may work very hard, but if they lack consideration for others, who wants them around? Some people may know where everything is or how to do all the tasks in an office, but if they don’t share the information with others, what go is it? It is when people are thoughtful of others, share their talents, and receive the offerings of others with joy, they make the environment so much better for all people.

SANCTUARY CANDLES: St. Thomas (at St. Dominic) Sophie Mongillo P A G E 4 AUGUST 15, 2021 liturgy corner The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today, Catholics and many other Christians celebrate the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This significant feast day recalls the spiritual and physical departure of the mother of Jesus Christ from the earth, when both her soul and her body were taken into the presence of God.

Venerable Pope Pius XII confirmed this belief about the Virgin Mary as the perennial teaching of the Church when he defined it formally as a dogma of Catholic faith in 1950, invoking to proclaim, “that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” His Apostolic Constitution “” (Most Bountiful God), which defined the dogma, contained the Pontiff's accounts of many longstanding traditions by which the Church has celebrated the Assumption throughout its history.

The constitution also cited testimonies from the early on the subject, and described the history of theological reflection on many Biblical passages which are seen as indicating that Mary was assumed into heaven following her death.

Although the bodily is not explicitly recorded in Scripture, Catholic tradition identifies her with the “woman clothed with the sun” who is described in the 12th chapter of the Book of Revelation. The passage calls that woman's appearance “a great sign” which “appeared in heaven,” indicating that she is the mother of the Jewish Messiah and has “the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” Accordingly, Catholic iconography of the Western tradition often depicts the Virgin Mary's assumption into heaven in this manner. ~Text provided by CNA ask father †

Question: Father, why do you go by Father Joe and your assistant goes by Father Madejski?

Answer: Because we are two different people! I don’t just mean we have different names, but we have different preferences. Is your name Elizabeth? Do you go by Liz, Liza, Lily, Beth, Betty, or just Elizabeth? It varies depending upon the person and the life lived. Father Madejski grew up in a traditional Polish home with his grandparents, and it was instilled in him that you would never call a priest by his first name. He continues that practice in his ministry. When I was ordained, I was sent to a parish in Waterbury where my cousin had been assigned for 16 years. He was Father Cronin, and people spoke of him often. When they did, they would look at me in confusion and not know what to call me. I told them to just call me Father Joe, as in our family, he was Father Jim. Each of us has a preference based on our life experience. One is not bit.ly/aoh.marriagemass better or worse, it is just a matter of style. ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY P A G E 5

Email and phone noted above. the catholic youth ministry of Southington

The Catholic Youth Ministry of Southington is an initiative that seeks to reach out to our young Catholic brothers and sisters in Christ, to welcome them, and to offer them opportunities to build deep, meaningful relationships with Our Lord Jesus, with one another, and with the larger Catholic community of Southington. In our Youth Ministry, high-school aged teens will be able to participate in fun and engaging events centered on our Lord, our Catholic Faith, fellowship, prayer, and service. We are planning to host our launch event in the last week of September. Further details and upcoming announcements will be posted in the bulletin and on our parishes’ websites.

Volunteers are vital to the growth and development of our Youth Ministry. Young people need trusted adults to accompany them along their journey of life. They need guides to lead them, not just to a place of fulfillment, meaning and purpose, but to an encounter with the One who gives their lives that very meaning and purpose- Jesus Christ. If anyone is interested in volunteering to support this ministry, please contact Michael Pavano by phone at (860)-628-5159 or by email at [email protected]

We are also planning to host a parent forum that will give parents of high-school students the opportunity to meet with our Director of Youth Ministry, learn more about our upcoming programs, and share insights on the lives of our young people. The forum will be held on September 1st at the St. Aloysius Church Center from 7-8PM. Ever wondered how the PLEASE NOTE, THE RECTORY OFFICE AT donuts for “Coffee IMMACULATE CONCEPTION HAS CLOSED
