Dear Friends, This is the last magazine letter that I shall write as I am retiring in May. I would like to thank you for reading my letters over the past twelve years. As I write this, we have just celebrated the greatest festival in the Christian year – Easter Day. The accounts of Jesus’ last days and his resurrection that we read in our Bible are profoundly moving, we recognise the human responses of Jesus’ friends and enemies to the events of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Day, the confusion and grief, the shock and bewilderment give way to awe and wonder as Jesus meets his disciples again. His message to them is one of peace, and instruction to go out into the world to tell his story. They cannot stay where they are, writing their memoirs, they are to be active, move out of Jerusalem, travel to strange and sometimes hostile countries to proclaim the Gospel of Christ. We might not live such risky lives as those first Apostles, but each new day for us brings new challenges and discoveries. Life does not stand still, the changes in our lives might be joyful or sad, and I have been privileged to share in some of those moments of change with you over the last twelve years, as well as sharing in the daily round of life. As I move on, I will take with me many memories, and reflect on how my life and ministry have been inspired by being in this place.

May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, May the rain fall softly upon you, And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

May the God of our beginnings and our endings bless you all, and may the peace of God, which passes all understanding, guard your hearts and minds now and for all time.

Your sister in Christ, Heather

BODENHAM ROMANIA SUPPORT GROUP Thursday 11th May: 2-4pm: Knit-in at 14 Brockington Road.

It is with regret that we have taken the decision to wind up this group after 28 years and we would very much like to thank everyone who has supported the group and Bodenham’s twinned village of Enlaka in Romania. Over the years several people have made visits to the village and visits have been made by people from Enlaka to Bodenham – mostly funded by a grant from The Know-How Fund. Thanks to the generosity of Bodenham residents who have supported the quizzes, Buttermarket stalls and car boot sales, it has also been possible to make financial contributions to various initiatives in Enlaka which have helped to set up small businesses and create a thriving Social Centre from a derelict bowling alley. Even such limited financial help as we have been able to offer from Bodenham has enabled the villagers to obtain ‘match funding’ from Caritas Foundation which has supported what we termed ‘The Social Project’. This has greatly improved the lives of the elderly population in terms of access to domiciliary support, medicines and transport to the doctor or hospital when needed. In the early days we also funded English lessons which has helped the villagers’ communication in their tourist industry. Special thanks go to the Bodenham Gardening Club who have enabled us to send a large quantity of seeds each year to enable villagers to grow their own food for themselves and families. It has been very heartening to have such committed support from Bodenham residents and on behalf of the Committee I would like to thank you all. If anyone is interested in seeing photos or more information about the group’s activities over the years we would be delighted to share this with you. Please contact me on 797044 or Margaret on 797096. You could also see Enlaka’s website www.atid.ro/index.php/villages/enlaka 6

On Tuesday 28 March work began on the new War Memorial Perpetual Garden with the help of the garden designer, Tricia Jackson, and volunteers, Dennis Jackson, Pat and Jim Crane, Heather Davies, Sandra and Richard Moule, Derek Pritchard, and Babs and Tony Mitcheson. With help from Derek’s mini-digger the area was enlarged, cleared and levelled. The volunteers then weeded the site ready for planting. The planting will be in three phases:

* Phase 1. This was begun on 28 March and is to form the basic structure of the garden, which includes roses, heuchera, rosemary, miniature conifers and primroses. Once the new pavement and stepping stones have been set in place Phase 1 will have been completed.

* Phase 2. Around the pavement will be planted thyme. Like all the plants in the garden, thyme has a meaning relevant to the War Memorial, because, appropriately, it stands for courage. Also planted at this stage will be the snowdrops and English bluebells which have been donated by residents so they are very local. The addition of anemone “Wild Swan” will complete Phase 2.

* Phase 3. Because we did not hear that we had been given the Grant from Herefordshire Council in time, we were not able to buy the native daffodil “Narcissus Pseudonarcissus” or the tulips “Magestic”. However, this will be done over Autumn/Winter 2017 and they will be House planted as soon as they arrive. Maintenance Whilst the majority of the planting will be complete by the end of summer 2017, the aim is that the garden will be & Decorating at its best for 2018. This is especially important as it will be the Centenary of the end of the First World War which will Specialist be celebrated on Remembrance Sunday, 11th November 2018. We have had a great deal of interest in this Project and it has therefore been agreed that an information board showing the planting design and the meaning behind the Free advice plants should be placed near the War Memorial in time for & quotations the Centenary event. A folder will also be kept in the Church for residents and public alike to see the planting design, the meaning of the plants, photographs of the new garden being All forms of household maintenance made, and the names of all those who have kindly donated to the Project. Honest and dependable If you would like to know more about the Bodenham Open Spaces Project, details can be found on the Parish website www.bodenhamparish.org.uk.
