Losing finalists in 1998/99 and 2003/04, when they fell foul of Parma AC and Valencia CF respectively, are set to launch a fresh bid for UEFA Cup glory at home against FC Twente in the Round of 32. • This will be the two sides' first meeting in European club competition. • Twente have played five matches against opponents from France, losing four and winning just one. Their three competitive games on French soil to date have all ended in defeat. • Marseille will be Twente's third opponents this campaign. They edged out Stade Rennais FC on away goals in the first round and lost 4-0 at Paris Saint-Germain FC in Group A. Those encounters are Twente head coach Steve McClaren's only previous experience of facing French opposition. • Marseille have played nine games against Dutch sides, and their overall record reads W3 D1 L5. At home their record is W2 D1 L2, which includes wins in their last two matches against outfits at the Stade Vélodrome. • Marseille met one of coach Erik Gerets's former clubs, Twente's Dutch rivals PSV Eindhoven, in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage. OM lost 2-0 in the and won 3-0 at home. • Former Belgium international right-back Gerets played in the Netherlands for MVV Maastricht in the 1984/85 season before a seven-year spell at PSV between 1985 and 1992. He later coached the Eindhoven club from 1999 to 2002. • In his coaching career thus far, Gerets has met Dutch opposition in four UEFA club competition matches – recording W1 D0 L3. Of two home fixtures, his teams have won one and lost one. • Gerets also represented Belgium in four matches against the Netherlands, accruing a record of W1 D1 L2. His solitary success against the Oranje came on home soil. • Though opposite number McClaren had not encountered French opposition prior to this season, he did come up against Gerets's PSV in the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League group stage in his role as assistant to Manchester United FC manager Sir Alex Ferguson. United lost 3-1 in Eindhoven but returned the favour in kind at . • Marseille's Dutch has Eredivisie experience in abundance, having represented PSV from 1994 until 1998. • Zenden may also have some useful insights on Twente's tactical approach. The midfielder played under McClaren for two seasons at Middlesbrough FC between 2003 and 2005.

• Indeed, Zenden enjoyed an impressive stint under McClaren at the Riverside Stadium. He was the scorer of Boro's second goal in the 2003/04 League Cup final win over Bolton Wanderers FC, the club's first major trophy success, and was voted the fans' player of the year in 2004/05 – his second and final season on Teesside. • Mamadou Niang, scorer of two goals in UEFA Champions League qualifying and three in Group D, is the only OM player to have found the net more than once in Europe this season. • Romano Denneboom and Rob Wielaert, who hit two goals apiece, are Twente's top European scorers so far this campaign. Wielaert left the club for AFC Ajax during the January transfer window. • Since a 1-0 home defeat by FC Zenit St. Petersburg on 9 March 2006 in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup Round of 16, Liverpool FC are the only team to have beaten Marseille in 12 European games at the Stade Vélodrome. The Reds have claimed two group-stage victories on OM's turf during that period, wins which came in the last two editions of the UEFA Champions League. • Twente have lost their last eight away games in UEFA competition, a run which stretches back to a 2-1 win at KSP Polonia Warszawa on 20 September 2001. • The second leg of this tie will be Marseille's 50th UEFA Cup fixture. • Twente are just two strikes shy of their 100th UEFA Cup goal. • Third in Ligue 1 last season, Marseille also finished third in UEFA Champions League Group D to qualify for the UEFA Cup Round of 32. Twente, who came fourth in the 2007/08 Eredivisie and earned a UEFA Champions League qualifying place via the end-of-season play-offs, were second in UEFA Cup Group A. • Marseille's Ronald Zubar and Twente's are within a booking of one-match suspensions. • January squad changes:- Marseille Players added to squad list: Tyrone Mears, Renato Civelli, Guy Gnabouyou. Players removed from squad list: Elamine Erbate, Elliot Grandin, Daouda Mbow. Twente Players added to squad list: Nikita Rukavytsya, Lesley Nahrwold, Alexander Bannink, Theoder Vogeslang. Players removed from squad list: Rob Wielaert, Stein Huysegems, Tjarron Chery, Jules Reinenink, Paddy John. • The winners of this tie will meet ACF Fiorentina or AFC Ajax in the Round of 16 on 12 and 18/19 March, playing the first leg at home. • Therefore, there is the possibility of an all-Dutch affair in the next round if both Twente and Ajax come through their ties.

Team facts

• Olympique de Marseille are making their second appearance in three seasons in UEFA club competitions. The French club have appeared in UEFA club competitions during 16 seasons since their first match which came in the first round of the 1969/70 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. • Marseille's last season in UEFA club competitions was eventful, starting in the UEFA Champions League, then transferring to the UEFA Cup where they advanced to the final of the competition only to lose 2-0 to Valencia CF. The French side had defeated FK Austria Wien in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League to advance to the group stage where, pitted against Real Madrid CF, eventual winners FC Porto and FK Partizan, they finished in third position. • They switched across to the UEFA Cup and beat FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, Liverpool FC, FC Internazionale Milano and Newcastle United FC to set up a final meeting against Valencia at Gothenburg's Nya Ullevi stadium. Goals in either half from Vicente Rodríguez and Mista sent the trophy back to Spain as Marseille lost a second UEFA Cup final in five years. • Marseille have competed in four UEFA club competition finals, winning one and losing three. Their sole success came in the 1992/93 UEFA Champions League final when a 43rd-minute goal from Basile Boli defeated AC Milan. • Marseille also lost the 1990/91 European Cup final on penalties to FK Crvena Zvezda, while their two UEFA Cup final defeats, in 1998/99 and 2003/04, came at the hands of Parma FC (0-3) and Valencia. 2005/06 season • UEFA Intertoto Cup: Marseille qualified for the UEFA Cup first round by being one of the three clubs to win a place in the competition through the Intertoto Cup. Marseille had finished in fifth place in French Ligue 1, one place below automatic qualification. • In the Intertoto Cup, Marseille overcame BSC Young Boys (5-3 on aggregate), S.S. Lazio (4-1 on agg.) and RC Deportivo La Coruña (5-3 on agg.) to advance to the UEFA Cup. Having lost the opening leg of their tie against Deportivo 2-0, Marseille looked destined for defeat after 64 minutes of the return match as the game stood at 1-1 after Jorge Andrade's ninth-minute goal for the Spanish side had cancelled out Franck Ribery's early opener for the home side. However, four goals in the last 25 minutes saw Marseille advance with Abdoulaye Méïté (65), Andrés Mendoza (74), Mamadou Niang (88) and Wilson Oruma (90+3) all finding the net. • UEFA Cup first round: Marseille eventually overcame Belgian side KFC Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen on penalties after the two sides failed to score a goal in 210 minutes of football. The French side overcame the Belgians 4-1 on penalties with Christian Giménez, André Luis, Taye Ismaila Taiwo and Samir Nasri all successful from the spot. • UEFA Cup group stage: The French side stunned the UEFA Cup holders, PFC CSKA Moskva, by winning 2-1 in the Russian capital in their opening 2005/06 group stage encounter despite a second-half recovery which almost snatched a point for the hosts. Goals from Sabri Lamouchi (23) and Mamadou Niang (38) gave Marseille a deserved half-time lead, but the home side rallied after the interval and missed a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit when Fabien Barthez saved Sergei Ignashevich's spot-kick. Vágner Love (80) pulled a goal back late on, but CSKA were unable to find an equaliser. • On Matchday 3, Taye Ismaila Taiwo kept his composure to convert a last-gasp penalty as Marseille earned a narrow win against SC Heerenveen, to secure a place in the knockout stages of the competition. • PFC Levski Sofia joined Marseille in the UEFA Cup knockout stages after Hristo Yovov's (55) second-half strike settled their tie against the French side on Matchday 4. • A 2-1 defeat of FC Dinamo Bucuresti on Matchday 5 provided Marseille with top spot in their group standings ahead of Levski and Heerenveen. First-half goals from Boštjan Cesar (38) and José Delfim (45) put the Ligue 1 team in control before Claudiu Niculescu (51) halved Dinamo's deficit early in the second period. • Marseille booked their place in the last 16 with a 2-1 aggregate victory against Bolton Wanderers FC, the French side holding their opponents to a scoreless draw in England before advancing in front of their home fans at the Stade Vélodrome. Stelios Giannakopoulos put Bolton ahead after 25 minutes, but Marseille hit back thanks to goals from Franck Ribéry (45+2) and a Tal Ben Haim own goal (68) to advance.

Key facts • To date, Marseille have played 117 matches in UEFA club competitions. In that time, the French side won 59, drawn 29 and lost 29 times with 186 goals scored and 118 conceded.

FC Twente UEFA club competition milestones • Twente's biggest European achievement came in reaching the final of the 1974/75 UEFA Cup, though they might prefer to forget certain aspects of the two-legged decider against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach. A 0-0 draw in the away leg looked to augur well for Twente, but they fell apart at home, losing the game – and the final – 5-1. UEFA Cup milestones • Reaching the 1974/75 final was Twente's biggest coup in the UEFA Cup, though they also reached the semi-finals in 1972/73. Just as in their later final appearance, however, Mönchengladbach blocked their path, winning 3-0 at home and 2-1 in Enschede. Competition information

The UEFA Cup evolved from the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and was first contested as the UEFA Cup in 1971/72. Next season the UEFA Cup will be reborn as the UEFA Europa League. The new name heralds major changes to the competition, which will have a new 48-team group stage with centralised marketing of broadcast rights, a presenting sponsor and an official matchball in addition to centralised sponsorship from the knockout stage and a new logo and visual identity. • Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case of repeated cautions, a player is suspended for one match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc). Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season. • Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from the 2008/09 season at least eight places are reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list also continues to exist – involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthday. A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21. • Away goals rule: For matches played under the cup (knockout) system, the team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, penalty kicks determine which team qualifies. • Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Cup matches from the start of the Round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remaining matches in the current competition. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Cup this season or by a club that has transferred from the UEFA Champions League to the UEFA Cup following the group stage. • Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness.
