OUR OPINION Helf takes charge at City Hall

t may not sound like much, but it probably means a lot to folks around Church Street Iand Pennsylvania Avenue, who had been trying for two years to get City Hall to close an open manhole and keep it closed. The lid kept coming off whenever big trucks would hit it at just the right angle, damaging the internal structure so the lid wouldn’t fit back on. No one could figure out how to make it stop. Or maybe they just hadn’t given it all that much thought. We called new City Manager Joe Helfenberger last week and he got it done, and done right, the next business day. The high tech solution to a nagging, two-year problem? City public works crews decided to weld the lid on. Sounds like a simple fix and it is. But for whatever reason, no one had Political polls junk science? been able to get it accomplished before Helfenberger took the reins at City Hall. ou’re probably like a lot of To be wise polling consumers, Maybe it’s a coincidence, or maybe just a people. The Tigers used that to their advantage, sending the pass rusher after Wohlgemuth all night in a variety of different looks. “I think that was beneficial to us,” Columbia head coach Brian Allen said. “They didn’t know that there would be a kid on the edge like (Camiel) so he was definitely disruptive and it Photos by BRENT KUYKENDALL/Lake City Reporter allowed other things happen as Columbia defensive back Devin Johnson catches Shyheim Brown’s blocked punt and returns it for a touchdown against Atlantic well.” Coast in the second quarter Friday night. First aid on the farm for FW FFA

Fort White FFA recognized National Farm Safety Week by collaborating with Columbia County Fire Rescue to learn basic first aid skills. CCFR shared information on basic first aid skills for injuries such as lacerations, fractures, trauma and more. The chapter hoped that this will encourage its members to extend their knowledge in first aid in preparation for accidents such as these, and bring awareness to real-life scenarios that could happen to anyone while on the farm or in the classroom. Using the first aid skills learned, FFA members hosted a mock farm accident demonstration on September 27, where they set up accident scenarios that could occur while working in an agricultural setting. These scenarios included choking, sim- ple lacerations, electrical shock, fainting, and an amputation. Members then visited each scenario to observe, assess and apply the learned skills to provide first aid for the injury using materials commonly found in first aid kits. The members are COURTESY now working to create first aid kits to keep in the Fort White Middle School FFA members put their first aid skills to the test as they work classroom as well as the Fort White High School with Columbia County Fire Rescue to assess the situation. This occurred during a “Mock Land Lab. Farm Accident” drill staged last month by the Fort White Senior FFA Chapter and CCFR.
