(September 18, 2017) – After held its 27th annual Sports Hall helping WVU down in-state foe Marshall and claim of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday at the Caperton the Black Knight Invitational, West Virginia Indoor Practice Facility. Eight members were named sophomore Katelyn Evans has been named the WVU as part of the 2017 class: Chrissie Abbott (women’s Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University soccer), Eddie Becker (men’s basketball), Willie Drewrey Apartments. (football), John Havlik (men’s & ), Charles Hickman (baseball), Dan Mozes (football), Evans finished the week averaging 4.00 kills per set, Kevin Pittsnogle (men’s basketball) and John Spiker ranking fifth in the Big 12. She hit .413 on 126 total (administration/athletic training). attempts, ranking fourth in the league in hitting percentage. Evans had 11 kills in a sweep of in-state foe WVU Athletes of the Week Marshall, leading WVU to the Golden Ball Trophy for the Fall 2017 first time since 2015. It was WVU’s first sweep of Marshall since 2010 and its first win in Huntington since 2000. Week 1: Michaela Abam, women’s soccer Week 2: Jad Arslan, men’s soccer The Palmdale, California, native went on to help WVU Week 3: Maggie Drazba, cross country finish 3-0 at Army’s Black Knights Invite in West Point, Week 4: Erin Slinde, volleyball New York, earning MVP honors. Evans posted a career-high Week 4: Katelyn Evans, volleyball 24 kills and hit .385 on 52 total attempts in a five-set win over host Army. In addition, she had 11 kills in a 3-0 win over Akron and 14 kills in a 3-1 win over Providence. She finished the week with 60 total kills.

Head coach: nikki izzo-brown This Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 6-ranked Mountaineers (7-2) open the defense of their five straight titles with a two-match swing in Texas this weekend … WVU opens at Baylor on Friday, Sept. 22, with kick from Betty Lou Mays Field in Waco, Texas, set for 8 p.m. EST … the Mountaineers then face No. 21 Texas on Sunday, Sept. 24, with kick from Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin set for 2 p.m. EST … the match will be broadcasted on the Longhorn Network.

Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU closed its nonconference slate with two wins in Princeton, New Jersey, defeating the No. 14-ranked Tigers, 1-0, on Sept. 15, and La Salle, 1-0, on Sept. 17 … junior defender Vanessa Flores netted the game-winner against Princeton in the 19th minute, and senior forward Michaela Abam connected on a penalty kick in the 20th minute against the Explorers for her third game-winner of the season … the Mountaineer defense did not allow a shot on-goal all weekend … the team’s win streak now stands at three, and the squad has recorded six clean sheets this year.

Notes: With the win Friday afternoon, WVU improved to 3-2 against ranked teams this season … should the Longhorns be ranked on Sept. 24, the Mountaineers will have faced at least one ranked opponent each week this season … junior forward Hannah Abraham and senior midfielder Alli Magaletta assisted on Flores’ goal … Abam is now two-for-two in penalty-kick attempts this season … she stands alone at No. 5 in the Mountaineer record book with 35 career goals … she also moves into a tie for seventh place with 85 career points.

This Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia concludes a three-match roadtrip at American on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. ET, in Washington, D.C. … the Mountaineers return home to host Dayton on Saturday, Sept. 23, with kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium set for 7 p.m. … tickets for Saturday’s contest are available at WVUGAME.com, 1-800-WVU GAME or on gameday at the DDSS ticket office … it is Youth Soccer Day, and all youth who wear their youth soccer jersey will receive free admission … additionally, the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a foam WVU soccer ball … before the match, members of the men’s soccer team and staff will hold a youth clinic.

Last Week in Men’s Soccer: The Mountaineers went 1-1 last week, which began with a 3-1 loss at UMBC, West Virginia’s first loss of the season … WVU responded with a 3-2 comeback win in overtime on Saturday night at George Mason … sophomore Albert Andres- Llop scored two goals, tying the game at 2-2 with 99 seconds remaining before scoring the game-winner 97 seconds into overtime … WVU also tied the match at 1-1 in the 18th minute, as sophomore Pascal Derwaritsch scored.

Notes: West Virginia is 4-1-2 on the season, 1-0-2 at home and 3-1-0 on the road … after scoring two goals on Saturday and one on Wednesday, sophomore Albert Andres-Llop has three on the season after he scored one as a freshman … Andres-Llop also earned an assist in the match, while senior Louis Thomas and sophomore Sebastian Garcia-Herreros recorded assists on the game-tying goal in the 89th minute.

Coach Marlon LeBlanc Following WVU’s Overtime Win at George Mason: “That was a good team we played against in George Mason that hadn’t lost at home yet this year. They’re a very good attacking team. But our kids were unbelievably resilient. We kept fighting, literally to the last second of the game and got a great free kick to win it in overtime.”

This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia opens conference play with a pair of home matches this week … WVU hosts TCU on Wednesday to open the Big 12 slate … first serve is set for 6 p.m. inside the WVU Coliseum … it will be a Dollar Night as well as Luau Night … on Saturday, the Mountaineers return to the court to host No. 6 Texas at 6:00 p.m.

Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers made it nine straight wins, going 4-0 on the week … the team went 3-0 to win the Black Knights Invitational … on Tuesday, Katelyn Evans had 11 kills and Mia Swanegan had four blocks to lead WVU to a sweep of Marshall to win the Golden Ball Trophy … Evans again had 11 kills, while Swanegan and freshman Katie DeMeo each had five in a sweep of Akron on Friday in West Point, New York ... later that day, the Mountaineers won a five-set thriller over host Army … Evans had a career-high 24 kills and hit .385 on 52 attempts in the win … Swanegan led the team with 10 blocks, while Payton Caffrey added 20 kills … WVU hit .301 in a 3-1 win over Providence on Saturday afternoon … Evans again led the way with 14 kills, followed by 10 from Morgan Montgomery.

Notes: WVU is currently on a nine-match win streak … it marks the longest win streak by the Mountaineers since 2014 when they won 10 in a row … WVU’s 3-0 win over in-state foe Marshall on Tuesday was its first sweep of the Thundering Herd since 2010 … it marked the team’s first win in Huntington since 2000 … WVU claimed the Golden Ball Trophy for the first time since 2015 … Katelyn Evans’ 24 kills against Army tied for most in the Big 12 this week … Evans finished the week ranked in the top-10 in the Big 12 in kills per set (fifth), hitting percentage (fourth) and points per set (fifth) … freshman Katie DeMeo ranked in the top-10 in a pair of categories as well … she was 10th in hitting percentage and ninth in blocks per set … Erin Slinde ranked second in aces while Ava Richards was third … Mia Swanegan was fourth in blocking.

Head Coach: Sean Cleary This Week in WVU Cross Country: West Virginia continues its break in the action this week ... the Mountaineers will next compete on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Kentucky.

Last Week in WVU Cross Country: The Mountaineers did not compete last week. … redshirt senior Amy Cashin was named the Big 12 Runner of the Week following her 12th place finish at Penn State’s Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 8. … Cashin ran the Blue-White Course (6k) in 21:49 and became the first of three Mountaineers to finish in the top 30 of the 85-runner field.

Notes: Cashin’s Big 12 honor was the third in program history. … current Mountaineer Jillian Forsey won the conference’s Runner of the Week award last season, while Sarah Martinelli won it in 2013 … WVU received votes in Week 1 of the USTFCCCA Division I Women’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll last week … the Mountaineers also ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region in last week’s regional rankings.

This Week in Rifle: The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers open their 2017-18 season against No. 9 NC State on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 8 a.m., at The Citadel’s Inouye Marksmanship Center in Charleston, South Carolina.

Last Week in Rifle: WVU won its fifth straight and nation-best 19th NCAA Rifle Championship with a championship-record 4723 score on March 11, 2017 … now-sophomores Morgan Phillips and Milica Babic claimed the NCAA smallbore and air rifle titles, respectively … the Mountaineers also won their eighth straight Great America Rifle Conference title with a 4725 total …. now-junior Ginny Thrasher won the conference air rifle championship … five Mountaineers ended the season with a combined 14All-America honors … WVU finished the season with a 12-0 record and an 8-0 mark against GARC foes.

Notes: Two student-athletes join the Mountaineers this season – freshman Sarah Osborn and redshirt-freshman David Koenders … Saturday’s season opener will serve as great preparation for the 2018 NCAA Championships, as The Citadel will play host to the match in March … the Mountaineers earned the No. 1 ranking in the College Rifle CoachesAssociation (CRCA) Preseason Poll … this season, WVU will face every team ranked within the top-10 but No. 8 Air Force.

Head Coach: Sean Covich This Week in : WVU opens its season on Monday at the Janney Invitational … hosted by VCU, the tournament will take place Monday and Tuesday on the Tuckahoe Course of the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond … golfers will play 36 holes on Monday with an additional 18 on Tuesday … in addition to the Rams and Mountaineers, the field will be comprised of Virginia Tech, Radford, Old Dominion, George Washington, Richmond, Coastal Carolina, Rutgers, Charlotte, Maryland and James Madison.

Notes: The 2017-18 season marks WVU’s second straight year at the Janney Invitational … Max Sear tied a program record with a low round of 66 on the final day of play at last year’s event … Sear will represent the Mountaineers once again at the event as part of WVU’s starting lineup … sophomore Etienne Papineau, junior Tristan Nicholls, sophomore Philipp Matlari and freshman Matthew Sharpstene will comprise the remainder of the WVU lineup … freshman Mark Goetz will compete as an individual … the Mountaineers were previously scheduled to play in The Invitational at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort in Johns Island, South Carolina, last week, but the tournament was canceled due to Hurricane Irma.

Coach Sean Cleary on the Janney Invitational: ”We’re looking forward to opening the season in Richmond. The Country Club of Virginia is always in excellent shape and we are taking three guys over there that played it last season. Etienne, Max and Tristan have all be around the course and can help the new guys with their game plan.”
