Here you can cross the Arctic Circle and experience the wilds of Lapland just outside Rovaniemi. Stroll to the fine falls at Vaattunkiköngäs and Vikaköngäs. The hiking area is made up of several parts which are in their natural state and very wilderness- like. In these areas visitors can become acquainted with the region's typical plant and animal species.

You can choose your own hiking path, but we recommend that nobody walks alone.

At the fire camp area we have sausages, “tikkupulla” (Finnish pastry) etc. for lunch.

Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos is the largest conference and events venue in northern Lapland and serves as a centre for Sámi self-governance, culture, education and know-how.

At the Science Centre Pilke exhibition you will have the opportunity to explore the forest with all your senses and from many different angles.

Did you know that for some people, forests are their “office”? That they are a rich source of new materials and innovations? A habitat for plants and animals? And an important part of Finnish culture? Get behind the wheel of a forestry machine, climb into a bird house, meet our mascot Tuksu the pine weevil and sing karaoke on an ant hill. Find all the timber components used to build the largest single item on display at Pilke, the timber-framed Pilke House! New experiences, new discoveries!

Rovaniemi Local History Museum, open 12-18, fee 2 for students, 5€ normal fee The museum illustrates life in a local farmhouse and its buildings a hundred years ago. The collection consists of villagers’ artefacts from the turn of the 19th and 20th century. They are mainly related to the traditional trades such as fishing, cattle farming, hunting, and reindeer farming. The empire-style main building from the 1840s stands in its original location and has been furnished following the traditional local style. Several collections are on display in the storage shed, including ones illustrating traditional handicrafts and food economy. In addition, the ground floor of the storage shed features an interesting photographic exhibition of the history of Rovaniemi.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Here is some important information for you in order to make your stay in Rovaniemi and participation in the International Summer School as smooth as possible. The Summer School programme begins on Wednesday, May 24th, at 8:30am at the University of Lapland (address: Yliopistonkatu 8, lecture hall 3). As a summer school participant you are required to follow the Summer School programme. Agreeing to participate in the Summer School means making a commitment to adhere to the time schedule, attend the lectures and participate in the workshops.

The Summer School coordinator Sanna-Mari Juopperi, will help you with questions concerning your stay in the Summer School. Her contact details are Sanna-Mari Juopperi, +358 (0)40 484 4241, sanna- [email protected].

You can also meet her during office hours (8-16). Her office is located at the Faculty of Social Sciences, on the second floor. Just take the elevator in front of Ls 19 to the second floor, turn left and see office 283A / Sanna-Mari Juopperi.

ACCOMMODATION IN ROVANIEMI

Santa’s Economy Hotel Rudolf (Address: Koskikatu 41-43, Check-in Hotel Santa Claus, Koskikatu 29)

Some of the students are accommodated in Hostel Rudolf, in the city centre. Students are accommodated in triple, double and single rooms; the rooms are equipped with TV and bathroom with shower. Hostel Rudolf has a kitchenette where guests can prepare hot meals and coffee or tea. The kitchenette comprises of a two-ring-hob, kettle, coffee machine, washing up basin and a small fridge. Hostel Rudolf is non-smoking hostel. There is free WiFi.

Please notice that there’s no reception in Hostel Rudolf, but the reception is in Hotel Santa Claus, about 700 meters from the hostel.

You are responsible for cleaning your own room and the common areas during the summer school; please do so. Be careful with your belongings. Remember to lock windows and doors. Please keep noise down after 10 pm.

After summer school check-out is by 11:00am. You can leave room keys in to a box in the hostel's lobby or deliver them to Hotel Santa Claus reception.

Hostel Café Koti (Address: Valtakatu 21)

Hostel Café Koti is situated right in the city center of Rovaniemi. Rooms have their own bathrooms and light breakfast is included in the private room price. There is an equipped kitchen, a cozy relaxing area and also a genuine Finnish sauna at guests use.

Café Koti offers great coffee, drinks, pastries and food in an easygoing atmosphere. Breakfast is also served daily and lunch during the weekdays. Social events are held in the café on selected evenings. Art exhibitions are also shown at times. 16

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Transport connections to / from Rovaniemi airport

Yellow Airport Bus, which we recommend, is on stand-by for aircraft arrivals and carries passengers to and from Rovaniemi town and surrounding areas. Fares: 7-12€/person. Airport bus stops at every hotel. For more information call +358 16 362 222, http://airportbus.fi/?language=en

Local taxi service You can take normal taxi from the airport to town, but it is more expensive, approximately 25€/taxi. The number of local taxi is +358 200 88 000, http://www.rovaniemenaluetaksi.fi/en

Bus from / to university and city centre Buss no 4 drives every 30 minutes from the University to the city centre and from the city centre to the University. The bus stop is right in front of the University’s main building. In the city centre the bus leaves from Ruokasenkatu (near the taxi station).

Buss no 8 drives from the railway station or the city centre (from Ruokasenkatu which is near the taxi station) to the Santa Claus Village. Santa Claus village is open every day at 10-17.

You will find that there are nice sidewalks all over the city of Rovaniemi and the destinations from one place to another are not that long.

COFFEE AND LUNCH

Coffee and lunch are not included in the summer school programme. Breakfast, lunch and coffee are available in Restaurants Felli and Petronella or Café Lovisa from Monday to Friday (Petronella on Saturday also).

Restaurant Felli is open Monday- Friday 7.45 – 16.00. Breakfast is served 7.45 – 9.30. Restaurant Petronella is open on Monday-Friday 9.00 – 21.00, Saturday 11.30 – 21.00. Café Lovisa is open Monday -Thursday 8.00 – 16.30, Friday 8.00 – 15.00.

The Summer School participants will get a lunch ticket which is valid to have a discount lunch in restaurants Felli and Petronella and in Café Lovisa. Please don´t give the ticket away! Felli and Petronella have several different kind of dishes and the price is 5.70€. There is also various vegetarian options. One meal includes salad, bread, drinks and one kind of main course. Please notice this when taking food. Lunch in Café Lovisa is 5.50€. Lovisa has two or three dishes every day, including vegetarian and salad options.

You can use internet in two ways:

TELEPHONE AND GROCERIES

If your mobile phone can’t make international calls, prepaid SIM cards can be bought from several R- kiosks and shops. There are no public phones in Finland.

There’s a small grocery shop (Sale) opposite to University’s main door. Supermarkets Prisma, K- supermarket and Lidl are located 1, 5 km from the University. A pharmacy is located inside the K- supermarket. In the city centre there are several smaller shops and bigger supermarkets to purchase food and beverages. Pharmacy is inside the shopping centre Sampokeskus.

RECYCLING

In Finland we recycle all our bottles and cans. So please make a notice of this and don’t throw bottles and cans in normal trash bins! You can take the bottles etc. back to the grocery stores and you’ll get 0,10 - 0,40€ back from each bottle. The amount depends on the bottle size. Or if you don’t want to take the bottles back, please leave them at your hostel room or give them to summer school coordinators.

In past years, for example, participants have sang, shared food, music, worn traditional clothing, showed photographs, taught dances, language and games that helped us learn something about the different countries represented. Atmosphere is informal and fun (no lectures).

Pot Luck Dinner A pot luck dinner will take place on Monday May 29th at 18-20.30 in lecture halls 20 & 21. Everyone is encouraged to bring food and/or drinks from their country to share with others. This is also an informal get-together

A DAY TRIP TO AMETHYST MINE OR ARCTIC CIRCLE HIKING AREA SUNDAY 28.5.2017

AMETHYST MINE:

Departure from the University of Lapland Main door is on Sunday 28th of May at 9:00. Participants who are staying on Hostel Rudolf will be collected at 9:10. Please be on time!

The overall cost of the trip is 30 euros which includes bus transportation, admission to the Amethyst mine, coffee and munkki (Finnish pastry) in the mine and lunch.

HIKING:

Kevo, Utsjoki

Departure from the University of Lapland main door is on Wednesday 31st of June at 07:00 am. Participants who are staying in Hostel Rudolf and Hostel Koti will be collected at 7:10 am. Please be on time!

Participants who will stay at the Hostel Rudolf and Hostel Koti after the excursion can’t leave their things in their rooms. You have to check out of hostel before we leave and then check back in after the trip. There’s a luggage room in Hotel Santa Claus reception and Hostel Koti if you don’t want to take all your luggage with you to Utsjoki.

Participants will live in shared cabin or rooms in Utsjoki. The accommodation facilities are very basic. Towel and sheets will include in the housing price. Please provide yourselves with comfortable clothes and shoes for spending time outdoors, in nature. For example sneakers might get wet on nature trails.

The overall cost of the excursion is 140€. This includes all meals, accommodations, transportation, entrance tickets etc.

On Thursday 1.6. you’ll meet Tea Teppo outside Hostel Rudolf at 11:00 and visit social agencies.

On Friday 2.6. you can choose your program for the day.

EXCURSION IN HELSINKI ON 3.6.–7.6.2017

Saturday 3th of June is arrival day to Helsinki when you also need to check in to a hostel. There is no timetable for this day so you can choose your schedule and ways to travel freely.

Travelling to Helsinki:

Travelling in Helsinki

We recommend purchasing a 3 day-card for public transportation in Helsinki. With this card you can use public transportation as much as you want. The price for this card is 18€, cards can be purchased from R-kiosks, tourist information in Helsinki city, at the airport and at the Central Railway Station.

Students will be accommodated in shared rooms for three or two persons. Each room has its own shower, toilet and kitchenette with a fridge. Lecturers will stay in single rooms. The price for a student is 110€ or 124€ depending on whether you ae in a triple or double room and 198€ for lecturers staying in single rooms. Prices include bed linen and towel, morning sauna and swimming.

From the airport: a) Take a Yellow Line airport taxi to our hostel (1-2 persons total 29, 50 euros). At the airport contact the Yellow Line service desk to arrange it. The service points are located in the arrival halls and are open from 06.00 am to 1.30 am. b) Take a regular taxi to our hostel (approximately 45-55 euros). c) Take a P or I train from the airport to the Central Railway Station (5 euros per person). d) Take a Finnair airport bus to the Central Railway Station (6, 30 euros per person). e) Take a regional transport bus 615 or 620 to the Central Railway Station (5 euros per person).

From the Central Railway Station: a) Take a tram number 2 towards “Nordenskiöldinkatu” in front of the Central Railway Station. Our tram stop is called ”Kauppakorkeakoulut”. It is the third stop from the Central Railway Station. The tram turns to the right, but keep on walking straight ahead. Turn left to the street called “Lapuankatu” and walk down the street until you reach “Hietaniemenkatu” street. Turn right and walk along “Hietaniemenkatu” street until the end of the street. Hostel Domus Academica is on your left. b) Take a metro towards “Ruoholahti”and get off on the next station called “Kamppi”. Take the escalator going up to the exit on “Runeberginkatu” street and turn right. Walk along “Runeberginkatu” street until you reach a roundabout. From the roundabout turn left on “Hietaniemenkatu” street and walk until the end of the street. Hostel Domus Academica is on your left. c) Hostel is also easy to reach by foot.
