From Glen

Hi everyone, it’s lovely to be able to say to a belated Happy New Year! And yes, to confirm that I am missing you all. As many of you will know, since last September I have been an ordinand in training for the Priesthood. I train part time with All Saints based at St Aidan’s which is the new training facility built on to St James’ House. I also study on regular residential weekends, retreats and summer school. Now if that all sounds rather busy, it is! However besides being hard work, it is very interesting and rewarding. I’ve made lots of new friends and met some amazing people.

At the moment I am on placement at St. Michaels Church Aughton and Holy Trinity . Everyone has made me very welcome and I am enjoying having lots of new experiences, including different styles of worship.

This isn’t my only placement, as when I come back to you after Easter I am still considered to be on placement in our United Benefice. I will also have to have another placement to gain experience of chaplaincy. The ordinands I train with are from all over the North West and of widely varying ages, backgrounds and churchmanship and this makes it fascinating as we discover more about each other.

The wonderful thing is though, that as each person and church are all different so we are also One Anglican Church. An amazing organisation which allows each church to experience and worship God in their own way while still being part of the world - wide Anglican Communion. I have also been encouraged by how alike we all are, and how each church works hard to help and support others less fortunate. The Church doesn’t always get a good press, and this is unfair. The more I learn the more I realise God’s church is amazing, and as part of God’s church so are each of you!

Looking forward to seeing you all soon, every blessing. Glen.

10.00am Said Eucharist & Imposition of Ashes at ST CUTHBERT’S CHURCH 7.30pm Sung Eucharist & Imposition of Ashes at ST THOMAS’ CHURCH This is an important day in the Life of all Christians. Both the Book of Common Prayer and Common Worship remind us that Ash Wednesday is a Holy Day - a day when all Christian people should gather to worship the Lord.

On Ash Wednesday there is the opportunity to receive the ‘Imposition of Ashes’ on your forehead.

What does this mean?

Well very simply at a point in the service - and it is optional - you are invited to come up to the altar rail and receive the cross - the sign of Jesus - on your forehead. This is a symbolic gesture that reminds us of certain things:-

That we are sorry for our sins and wish to repent of them.

That through the cross we are sealed for Christ.

That through the cross we are redeemed and saved.

So at the start of Lent (Ash Wednesday) please join us in church as we start our journey towards Easter.

Halsall St Cuthbert’s Primary

School : March Update

Letter of Congratulations We received a joint letter from the RT Hon Damian Hinds MP and the RT Hon Nick Gibb MP the other week. The letter congratulated the school on its performance in the Key Stage 2 SATS last summer when 100% achieved the Expected Level in both Reading and Mathematics. It confirmed that this placed the school in the top 1% of primary schools in the country. A fabulous achievement and well done to the children, staff, governors and parents.

Chess Tournament Success At the district Chess Tournament the other day, Halsall St Cuthbert’s won the small schools’ trophy. Well done to Mrs Galley who organises the weekly Chess Club and to the children who must have practised really hard, both in school and at home. Special mention must go to James Totty who won all of his 5 matches and he’s only in year 4. A star for the future there’s no doubt. (see group photo with medals)

Quiz Night

The PTFA is holding a QUIZ NIGHT on Friday 15th March. From 7-30pm. Miss Hampson will once again be our compere and quizmaster. Tickets are £5 and are available from the school. People are asked to bring their own drinks and nibbles. There’ll be lots of great spot prizes, fun and frolics. Make up your teams up to 8 max. Everyone is welcome. See you there.

Mothering Sunday Service

The children will be saying a big thanks to their mums at a special Mothering Sunday Church Service on Sunday 31st March. Everyone is welcome to pop along. There’ll be lots of singing and dancing as they show their love and appreciation for their mums and ask for God’s blessing upon them. It should be a lovely occasion.

Charity Cheques

We have now received thankyou letters from both Alder Hey Hospital and the NSPCC following our respective £1,500 donations. Hopefully the money will be wisely spent and provide a little more support for those in our community who may be sick, disadvantaged or vulnerable. Thanks to everyone for being so generous.

Space Week

We followed a Space theme the 1st week back after the half-term holidays. The children found out more about the history of space travel, they considered life as an astronaut, they watched DVDs, they carried out research and they studied the stars, our solar system and its planets. They also thought about weather and scenery on other worlds and the possibility of life and aliens. They drew pictures and sculpted clay models of other lifeforms, designed cardboard rockets and did paper mâché moonscapes and painted scenery. All these activities were the inspiration for lots of descriptive writing and adventure text. The children really enjoyed the week and learned a great deal about God’s great, big, wonderful universe.

The Segar Bible

This article continues an account of the Segars, one of the most influential and important families that lived in Halsall/ Barton. The perception from history is that the Segars were landowning farmers or ‘Yeomen’. The Segar family bible contains a bold attempt at a family tree, which takes the Segars back to the year first millennium.

Stephen Segar of Calne in Wiltshire came over into with Erchinwin King of the eastern Saxons. There are also Norman and French families, around the start of the second millennium. In 1112 Seguier a noble and ancient family of Quercy in France were chanceliers (chancellors) to the French King Louis VI and became Segars in England. Afterwards Segars are identified in Surrey, Bedfordshire, Wiltshire and the Isle of Sheppey. There is even a lost village called Segary near Malmesbury in Wiltshire. It seems a long way away from the first reference we have to a Segar at Halsall. In 1572 our local Segar family tree reveals an Edward Segar, who was a notary in Manchester and it was he who fathered the Halsall Segars who were so vital to Halsall church and important in land drainage, creating arable land from the marsh and moss at Barton and land west of Halsall, all the way to the sea.

It is the connection between the Halsall Segars, or should we say more accurately the Barton Segars and the other branches of the family in the south of England; which is proving more difficult to make the link. We know the Segars in the south were given knighthoods. A coat of arms was commended to Robert Segar in 1568 by order of Elizabeth I. Captain Francis Segar was rewarded by King James I and Sir William Segar, Knight of the Garter was made Principal King of Arms in 1616. Here, in the Segar bible, there is also some Halsall history which is relevant because we come across a Sir John Halsall and we learn also that Sir Gilbert Halsall, Marshall of the field in 1424 lost his life at Cravant in Burgundy defending a siege against the French and Sir Henry Halsall who lies in a tomb in St Cuthbert’s chancel did great things at Bosworth and was created a baronet for his valour.

16

It begs the question whether or not Edward Segar the Manchester notary made connection with the ancient and ennobled Segars of the south in order that his family name might be considered to have parity with the Lords of the manor the Halsalls. As a consequence of this action the Segars became Ministers, Churchwardens and eventually through John his grandson, they married into the Halsall family. History has only considered the Segars Yeomen but the Segar bible reveals them to be a family of stature with a coat of arms that could be quartered with the Halsall arms and their name carved prominently on the Church were it remains to this day.

The Segar Bible is held in archive in Lincolnshire. I am very grateful to Alan Wilson from the Wirral who had sight of the same and photographed relevant pages. He contacted me after my article appeared in Halsall news in 2018.
