A Tudor House with a Victorian Personality Hall Education Visits 2020

Speke Hall is a Tudor timber-framed manor house on the banks of the . Restored and brought back to life in the 19th century, it’s a unique mixture of Tudor simplicity and Victorian Arts and Crafts' aesthetics. With formal gardens, semi-ancient woodlands and an estate walk with views to the river and Airport, Speke Hall is a wonderful place to bring students interested in national and local History.

We have a number of Education Tours on offer - just choose the one that best suits your students’ needs from the options listed overleaf.

Our tours will run between Wednesday 11th March and Tuesday 24th November 2020. We’re unable to accommodate schools on Mondays or during school holidays , and we use the published school term dates for Liverpool City Council as a guide when we set dates for school holidays.

All school visits must be booked in advance as we have limits on the number of people we can accommodate each day. We may have to ask large groups to spread their visit over two or more days.

Students from Schools and Colleges that have Education Group Membership (EGM) of the National Trust get free entry to the property and are only charged for the tour programme they follow. Students from Schools that are Non-members are charged for both. All Schools and Colleges should bring a minimum of 2 Responsible Adults on a visit and there is no charge for any of the Responsible Adults you bring to supervise your students.

The National Trust is an independent registered charity, number 205846 Morning Tours Available for up to 60 students per day all our tours start at 10:15am and finish at approximately 12:00pm, when you can return to school or stay on site for teacher-led activities in the grounds at no additional cost. All of our tours can be adapted to suit all Key Stages. It is also possible to combine our morning tours for students studying national or local history over an extended period of time. Victorian Morning Tour For students from Key Stage 1: Previously known as the Houses and Homes tour. With the help of our guides students will look at the Victorian contents of the House to find out how some of the rooms were used, and see what the owners of the furniture looked like. They will be able to compare how things used to be long ago with how things are today, to find out how much has changed - and how much hasn’t. This tour finishes at approximately 11.45am. For students from Key Stages 2 & 3: Students see Speke Hall as it was left by its last owner, Adelaide Watt and her tenant Frederick Leyland. Our guides will take the students around the inside of the Hall, looking at how the latest Victorian innovations were brought into the house to make life more comfortable for all of the people living in it. Tudor Morning Tour For students from Key Stages 1, 2 & 3: Our guides will take the students around the outside and inside of the Hall, looking at the way the House was built and the Family that built it. Students will be given the chance to learn a simple dance, and see some replica costumes. KS1 students will hear about life long ago. KS2 & KS3 students will also see how the House and Family were affected by religious and political changes between 1530 and 1598. For GCSE students: Our guides will take the students around the outside and inside of the Hall, looking at the way the House was built, the Family that built it and at how both the House and Family were affected by social, religious and political changes in Elizabethan . Students will be given the chance to see some Elizabethan portraiture and see some replica costumes.

Afternoon Classroom Session This is an additional option for Schools who book a Tudor Morning Tour for students from Key Stages 1-3. Small Group Option: Available for up to 40 students, who will be working with our guides in 2 groups, using our education room and small back classroom. Students should bring a small orange with them so they can make a pomander, a 16th Century scented ball which was used for health and hygiene. With the help of our guides they will also be looking at two replica costumes and replica artefacts to discover what a Tudor Boy and Girl would have worn; and how table settings were an indication of wealth and status. This session starts at 1pm and finishes at approximately 2.15pm and we recommend a coach for 2.30pm. Large Group Option: Available for between 40 & 60 students, this is an assembly style whole group presentation in our education room by our guides. They will be using two complete costumes and replica artefacts to show students what a Tudor Boy and Girl would have worn; and how table settings were an indication of wealth and status. Teachers will be given a simple guide to making pomanders that can be taken back to school and used as a follow up activity. This session starts at 1pm and finishes at approximately 1.45pm and we recommend a coach for 2pm. If your coach needs to leave before the recommended times please let us know on arrival at Speke Hall, as this allows us to adapt your programme accordingly.

Small Group Visit Grounds Only Visit Available for up to 14 students from Special Schools, Available to all school groups for teacher- Alternative Education groups and Exam groups led activities in the Grounds, this option is (studying at GCSE level or above), this is a self-guided available every Tuesday to Friday between visit to the Hall during afternoon public opening, every Tuesday 3rd March and Friday 23rd Wednesday to Friday between Wednesday 11th March October 2020 with the exception of school and Friday 23rd October 2020 with the exceptions of holidays, using the dates published by school holidays, using the dates published by Liverpool Liverpool City Council.
