Background and Content Initially conceived as a UK Millenium Project for the public, the Eden Project has grown to become not only a tourist attraction, research and educational tool, but one for generations to come. This time his focus was to create something new, starting from scratch, that would amaze future generations. This structure aimed to educate visitors about the importance of a sustainable environment through the study and education of plants. To achieve this goal, Tim teamed up with the internationally known sustainable architecture firm of Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners. Together they explored many innovative ideas for the creation of the world’s largest biome. Design Intent and Validation The strict criteria for such an innovative structure created many design challenges. First, the structure was to be the world’s largest plant enclosure. This involved coming up with a design scheme that could span for great distances without the use of a single internal support. Second, the structure must be as light as possible. This was needed for transportation reasons primarily because all the materials would have to be brought in from other cities, a long distance away. In addition, a lighter structure would put less stress on the soil and al- low for smaller footings and less site impact. Last, the enclosure must be ecologically friendly helping it to be used as an educational demonstration of sustainability. Grimshaw’s solution to this challenge was to look at nature. One of the most significant was the fact that it marked the first year of our new five-year strategic plan. This plan is our roadmap to achieving our vision and our potential as a leading botanic institution. The plan represents our dreams and aspirations for the future and the first year demonstrated great progress towards the challenging goals we set for ourselves. Two significant key goals of the plan call for the creation of an international center for tropical botany at The Kampong (our garden in Florida) in collaboration with Florida International University and the renewal and improvement of our flagship garden – McBryde Garden. Both of these goals will extend the impact of our organization to a national and international audience as well as help to create a more sustainable organization financially. Significant contributions were received in 2012 towards both of these goals. Another highlight of 2012 was the fall Board meeting held in the United Kingdom. In the 49-year history of our organization, this is the first time the Board has met outside of the United States. The meeting took us to the Eden Project in Cornwall and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in Scotland where they shared their expertise in innovation through marketing, visitor services and education.

The main barrier to their use is that curvature complicates manufacturing, assembly and design, such that cost and construction time are usually significantly higher than for parallelepipedic structures. Significant progress has been made recently in the field of architectural geometry to tackle this issue, but many challenges remain. In particular, the following problem is recurrent in a designer’s perspective: Given a constructive system, what are the possible curved shapes, and how to create them in an intuitive fashion? This thesis presents a panorama of morphogenesis (namely, shape creation) methods for architectural envelopes. It then introduces four new methods to generate the geometry of curved surfaces for which the manufacturing can be simplified in multiple ways. Most common structural typologies are considered: gridshells, plated shells, membranes and funicular vaults. A particular attention is devoted to how the shape is controlled, such that the methods can be used intuitively by architects and engineers. Two of the proposed methods also allow to design novel structural systems, while the two others combine fabrication properties with inherent mechanical efficiency.

At the present time due to changes in legislation imposing an obligation for the rehabilitation of the areas devastated and degra- ded by industrial activity resulting in the loss of their value to stakeholders, more and more attention is being paid to these issues. Moreover, in Poland as well as abroad there are many examples that prove the fact that investing in industrial structures can bring many economic, commercial social and environmental benefi ts. One of them is undoubtedly a huge garden called the Eden Project, located in the south-western part of Great Britain. 2. Location of the Eden Project The Eden Project is located in a small town called Bodelva in the county of Cornwall. It is located about 5 km from the county’s largest city — St. Austell and about 440 km from the capital of Great Britain, London. It is not a place to visit when visiting London or other larger cities, but a place you need to take a special trip to. A trip can be planned very easily thanks to the possibility of using multiple transport solutions, which are explained in detail on the project’s website.
