NOVEMBER 2010 ISSUE MMUSICMAG.COM ’80s pop culture like John Hughes’ fi lms and U2’s cinematic sound during that era. “We were teenagers then, and a lot of the pop culture was about archetypes of what it was like to be that age,” Bush says. “And that’s what really inspired us to become musicians. A lot of the songs came from conversations about that.” While the powerful, anthemic sound of The Incredible Machine won’t surprise anyone who knows its origins, it might shock country fans used to more down-home sounds. But reinvention is almost as much part of Sugarland’s identity as any one genre. The group grew out of the Atlanta singer-songwriter scene but found immediate success in mainstream country music with its 2004 multiplatinum debut, Twice the Speed of Life. “We’ve turned over a whole lot of new leaves since starting this Stewart Volland band,” says Bush. The trio became a duo when founding member Kristen Hall abruptly Jennifer Nettles, Kristian Bush quit while Sugarland was still riding high on the first album’s success, and some wondered if the shift would upset the group’s unique chemistry.chemistry. August 2012 Newsletter
August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th. -

If There's a Pedigree for a Modern Country Music Star, Then Angaleena
If there’s a pedigree for a modern country music star, then Angaleena Presley fits all of the criteria: a coal miner’s daughter; native of Beauty, Kentucky; a direct descendent of the original feuding McCoys; a one-time single mother; a graduate of both the school of hard knocks and college; a former cashier at both Wal-Mart and Winn-Dixie. Perhaps best of all the member of Platinum-selling Pistol Annies (with Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe) says she “doesn’t know how to not tell the truth.” That truth shines through on her much-anticipated debut album, American Middle Class, which she co-produced with Jordan Powell. Yet this is not only the kind of truth that country music has always been known for—American Middle Class takes it a step further by not only being a revealing memoir of Presley’s colorful experiences but also a powerful look at contemporary rural American life. “I have lived every minute on this record. My mama ain’t none too happy about me spreading my business around but I have to do it,” Presley says. “It’s the experience of my life from birth to now.” Yet the specificity of the album’s twelve gems only makes it more universal. While zooming in on the details of her own life, Presley exposes themes to which everyone can relate. The album explores everything from a terrible economy to unexpected pregnancies to drug abuse in tightly written songs that transcend the specific and become tales of our shared experiences. “I think a good song is one where people listen to a very personal story and think ‘That’s my story, too,’” Presley says. -
JO DEE MESSINA Star Del Voghera Country Festival 2017

Down to Business: Herman Lubinsky and the Postwar Music Industry
Journal of Jazz Studies vol. 10, no. 1, pp. 1-24 (Summer 2014) Down to Business: Herman Lubinsky and the Postwar Music Industry Robert Cherry and Jennifer Griffith The historical record has emphasized how black performers were treated unfairly by the men who dominated the postwar music industry. Managers and venue operators, we are told, fell into dubious practices and the most contentious figures were the Jewish owners of independent record companies that sprang up in the 1940s. Accounts suggest that for several decades most artists relied on any owner who was willing to record them. In addition, the ubiquity of artists’ drug addiction between the 1940s and 1970s has influenced studies of artist-owner relationships. It has prompted a deserved historical sympathy for the artists and, unfortunately, negative views of owners who were often perceived to take advantage of their vulnerability. Consequently, record company owners were in a position to exploit artists and only a few Jewish owners have escaped claims of unfair practices towards the black artists they recorded.1 In this article, we explore testimonies and written accounts of critics and biographers to show how contradictory and inconclusive evidence has led to simplistic notions of exploitive business practices. In particular, we explore the harsh negative assessment of Herman Lubinsky, owner of Savoy Records. Most importantly, we demonstrate that record owner practices were substantially affected by changes in conditions of the jazz market between 1930 and 1960. Judging the level
