First Grade Newsletter: March 22-26, 2021

Most Wonderful Monday First Grade Families! Hoping you all had a wonderful weekend. We have a basketball family, so most of my time was watching the excitementGreeti of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. We continue our own excitement with the March Madness Reading Challenge! Your scholars are doing some major reading! We are down to our Elite Eight readers! We are excited to see who will take the honor of Reading Challenge champion. Our school’s 2nd and final Book Fair is taking place now! The virtual fair ends Tuesday, March 23rd! 25% of all sales go toward school supplies and materials. Please be sure to grab some books for your scholars, friends and loved ones. Anyone can participate so feel free to share with your village.  We will use the same spelling words this week. We only had 4 days of school last week and were unable to take our test. We will have our final PICK-UP day for families, Friday, March 26th. Times will be posted on Class Dojo. Important Dates , 2021 – Last Day for the Online Scholastic Book Fair , 2021 – 4th Quarter Begins. , 2021 – Pick Up Day from 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM for Materials and Supplies. Homework Penmanship (Cursive) – Please allow your scholar to place his/her writing packet at their workstation. We will be using cursive penmanship sheets daily.

Math- We will continue to use the CUBES strategy and other strategies for Addition and Subtraction problems. Scholars must show their work when completing their math assignment. Please make sure your scholar is practicing his/her facts!

Spelling List – river, such, where, smile, even, something, never, twitches, caught, everyone, park, river, believe, plunges, dazed (Spelling Test will be on Monday, March 22, 2021).

Reading – Read at least 30 mins. daily. Complete your reading log daily. Please use Raz Kids as your main reading resource. I would like for all scholars to read a Raz Kid book daily and complete at least 2 reading comprehension tests per week. I will be monitoring their progress weekly. Your scholar continue to enjoy all the wonderful books in Epic after completing the Raz Kids assignment.

Writing – Complete a journal entry on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Please practice ELA narrative writing skills while completing your journals. Include a beginning, middle and end with at least two events. Do not forget to use words such as first, next, then, and finally to tell the order of events.

Check Daily– Reading Log, Journal (Tuesday and Thursday), Practice Addition and Subtraction Facts. Practice your cursive writing on a separate sheet of lined paper. Please do not use the cursive writing sheets from school. Current Topics of Study

Read Across America Month- Continue to celebrate “Read Across America Month” by visiting and purchasing some books from our Virtual Spring Book Fair!

FDS Virtual Spring Book Fair – The fair has been extended for two more weeks! The Virtual Spring Book Fair is scheduled for March 10th – March 30th! Please remember to visit and purchase some books for your scholar. Remember to use your scholar’s current Guided Reading Book Levels!

Generation Genius- For the optional DIY activity: If you and your scholar choose to complete any of the DIY activities, we send home, please send us pictures and/or videos of the activity process. We will send the pictures and/or videos to Ms. Harrison to include in our new website!

Academics in March

ELA & Math - We will start our prep work for Standardized Testing in the areas of ELA and Math. Make sure your scholar is reading on his/her current reading level and two levels above. Each scholar must continue to respond to his/her reading using the Reading Comprehension notebook with the reading and writing strategies provided. Also, all scholars must continue to use the XtraMath program for homework! Math- We will continue to work on Math Strategies this week. Also, we will continue to review measurement and some new measurement concepts! Penmanship- We will continue practicing cursive writing letter (j) words! STEM/Science- We will use Generation Genius to focus on our new concept “Physical Science/Matter Properties & Change”!

Homework & More Information

Scholars are expected to read Monday-Thursday nights for at least 45 minutes and at least once over the weekend. Your scholar must complete his/her reading log with a reading response previously taught. Also, scholar must practice Math Facts using XtraMath Monday-Thursday and at least once over the weekend!
