Seal, however, evidently entered the historic Capitol Studios and United Recording more delighted than a kid in a candy store who just had his braces removed. Going by his liner notes, in which he raves about performing with a 65-piece orchestra, cutting the set, his first for Republic, had an invigorating effect on him. Conducted and arranged by Grammy nominee Chris Walden, Standards was recorded with first-rate studio veterans, some of whom worked with Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. Seal doesn't waste the grand setting, exhibiting full-effort sincerity, winking charm, and even rare flashes of vivacity at all the right moments, as if this was the album the gravelly tenor was born to make. With the exception of early- '60s selections "It Was a Very Good Year" and "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is" -- the latter coincidentally reworked by Boyz II Men for Under the Streetlight, released only a month prior -- all the source material dates from the '30s, '40s, and '50s. The likes of "Luck Be a Lady," "My Funny Valentine," "I've Got You Under My Skin," and "They Can't Take That Away from Me" must be among the songs least in need of new faithful interpretations, but it all plays out with studied finesse. Seal wasn't merely thrown a stack of sheet music and told to crank out the product. It's a treat for fans, as well as the singer, which is part of the appeal. Seal album download. Seal lays bare the theme of his sixth album in its title: this record -- his first collection of original songs since 2007’s System -- is all about commitment, staying true in a long-lasting love. It could also be said that Seal is committed on a professional level, not just a personal one, remaining faithful to the coolly synthesized adult contemporary soul he pioneered way back in 1991, perhaps adding a little of the big band flourishes of 2008’s Soul but otherwise offering an album as consistent and familiar as its five predecessors. The differences are subtle, existing in the content of the songs or the overall tone of the album, with Commitment feeling warmer and more inviting than System, which is only appropriate for an album about longtime love. Seal 7 followed the all-covers 2012 set Soul 2 and was the singer's first set of original material since the 2010 release Seal 6: Commitment. More significantly, it was his first originals-oriented collaboration with longtime creative partner and friend Trevor Horn since 2003's Seal 4, and it was made in the wake of the singer's divorce from Heidi Klum. The first single, "Every Time I'm with You," a grand and swirling ballad with an orchestral arrangement from Anne Dudley, showed that Seal had no desire to make his return all about romantic conflict, as it placed him in the setting of a new relationship, willfully abandoning caution: "I can lose it all, it won't be daunting." Another song that reached the public prior to the album, the Jamie Odell co-composition "Life on the Dancefloor," also dealt with being swept up, though in the club through a low-key groove. As with Seal's previous albums, however, Seal 7 does cover a range of emotions. The heavier songs, including the opening "Daylight Saving," the almost overblown "Padded Cell," and "The Big Love Has Died," with a title and scope worthy of Seal 4 -- are among the most resonant moments. While one could speculate how those songs and the remainder of Seal 7 relate directly to Seal's life, it's clear that the singer and Horn aimed, as they always have, for broad appeal; just about anyone can connect with the pain and elation they relate. They've stuck to the approach that has made them a successful duo since "Crazy," all the way down to the dark synthesized undercurrents.
