Blue diamonds, yellow moons, green clovers, purple horseshoes, and red balloons. So many different colors of delicious “marshmallows” in every bowl of Lucky Charms cereal. As a kid, that was all the colors of the rainbow. But did you ever think about just how many different colors there are out in this world? I hadn’t until recently. You see, I have continued to make progress working on my C10 during this shutdown. It’s the vehicle I drive every day, so for once, I am actually able to take my time and do the things I want, the way I want. After four years, I’ve finally gotten around to replacing the damaged fender. Fellow club member Alan Nowaczyk, who owns Collision Craft Autobody and Frame in Bridgeview, painted my new fender for me. It’s an all white truck, but I want to two tone it. White and orange, white and red, white and yellow, white and blue, white and green; what color to choose? I even considered the purple Heather that’s on my 1960 Series 62. So you see, I think I’ve considered all the colors in Lucky Charms already. Of course, the devil is in the details as they say. It’s not just the fundamental color, but what shade? Fortunately, Alan has been amassing a library of color charts going back to the pre-war era. Still uncertain, Alan pulled out the color book for me. It literally is every color of the rainbow as the reds slowly shift to orange, and then to yellow, to green, to blue, to purple, and so on. I estimate that it has approximately 12,000 different colors! Oh, and by the way, he has a second book that repeats with all the metallic colors. Pick your favorite color out of 24,000 choices. Hmm, this might take me awhile. Pardon me while my brain goes into color overload. Skittles tell us to catch the rainbow. I think the rainbow just plowed me over like it was an 18-wheeler and I was a possum gazing at the lights. All I can say is that it will be a bright, happy color, but sorry mom, I don’t think it will be pink.

So, I’m happy to report that our club is meeting again. No, not in person, but electronically. Although it’s not the same as meeting in person, it is better than not meeting at all. While Illinois continues to have some of the stricter policies on social distancing, I can’t necessarily disagree with our governor, especially when you see the record number of cases coming out of places like Texas, Arizona, Florida, and the Carolina’s. For July, we are considering an outdoor, in- person meeting with plenty of distancing. This will be decided at the June meeting based on our members comfort level with this. If we do, please respect the 6ft spacing guidelines. If the membership votes it down, we will meet virtually again in July. Check this newsletter for the final meeting details.

Earlier this month we had to cancel our Collector Car Parade. It was unfortunate, but the Elmhurst Police were concerned about potential safety hazards given that it involved numerous car clubs. I think most of the concerns were envisioning a worst case scenario, but they were firm on their stance. However, we have decided to give it another try in a scaled back format. It will be a CLC event only which will alleviate their concerns. We are going to do a parade around Lexington Square Retirement Community, Elmhurst Extended Care, and Providence Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Downers Grove. Look for all the details on page 10 in this newsletter and please plan on joining us. Until next time – Fred Butalla

We never thought we’d see the day (or night) but a Schweitzer family gathering turned into a small club cruise night on Friday June 6th. In preparation for Marilyn Schweitzer’s surgery (see page 8) daughter and son-in-law Lauren & Jon Cody drove down from Wisconsin. They traveled in style in their recently purchased all original 1960 Fleetwood 60 Special. As a surprise for Ron, Jon set up with a small group of region members to meet at the Schweitzer house "cruise night". What a fantastic surprise it was. Ron even got to drive a 2016 Rolls Royce Ghost thanks to Erik Pedersen and Frank Troost. Here’s to a fast end to the Coronavirus and many more cruise nights SOON!

First-Ever Cadillac Grand Prix of Sebring Propels IMSA’s Return 2020 Cadillac CT5-V will serve as the pace car for IMSA’s second race back on July 18

Cadillac, a brand known for success and performance both on and off the racetrack, will serve as the title sponsor for the Cadillac Grand Prix of Sebring on Saturday, July 18 at Sebring International Raceway in Florida.

The event will be the second race back for the 2020 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series, following the WeatherTech 240 at Daytona on Saturday, July 4.

“High performance driving is part of Cadillac’s DNA. We have all missed racing and we’ve been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see our DPi-V.R prototypes compete on the track again,” said Steve Carlisle, Cadillac president. “That’s why Cadillac is proud to support IMSA’s return to racing as the title sponsor of the July 18 race at Sebring, one of the world’s most iconic tracks.”

Prior to the race, the 2020 Cadillac CT5-V will serve as the official pace car. This marks the first pace car duties for the all-new compact luxury , which went on sale earlier this year.

The 2020 Cadillac CT5-V pace car features:

. 360 horsepower and 405 lb.-ft. of torque derived from a high-output 3.0L twin-turbo engine, which uses low-inertia turbochargers to enhance power production across the rpm band . 90 percent of peak torque at 1800 rpm . 10-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Precision Shift and Dynamic Precision Mode . Performance suspension with the fourth generation of Magnetic Ride Control . Standard electronic limited slip differential, optimizing torque transfer across the differential . Performance Traction Management and Launch Control . Brembo front brakes, providing consistent high-performance braking in all conditions . Nineteen-inch wheels and summer-only performance tires 1 . Unique IMSA Sebring graphics package

Cadillac Racing has had plenty of recent success on Florida tracks, winning two of the last three Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring races (2017, 2019) as well as four consecutive Rolex 24 At Daytona titles (2017 -2020).

“Cadillac has been a Sebring and IMSA partner for years, and we’re grateful for their support of the Cadillac Grand Prix of Sebring,” said Wayne Estes, president and general manager of the Sebring International Raceway. “Adding this event to the season schedule is a tremendous benefit to Sebring and IMSA fans, and having never hosted an international touring series event in the summer at Sebring, this will be a new experience for all of us and one we are anxious to give to our fans and competitors.”

Jim Rudnick 1939-2020

West of the Lake Region member, Jim Rudnick passed away in June.

Jim was a regular at club meetings and events, his infectious laugh and wry smile lit up our gatherings.

Jim got hooked on the car hobby as a young boy. At age 9, Jim started drawing cars, eventually being published in a book of dream cars. Photo credit: My Car Story, Lou Costabile

Jim was noted for self-restoring his beautiful 1960 Biarritz convertible. Jim’s car and life story were featured in Lou Costabile’s “My Car Story” YouTube series. Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/wYNJNQVXu4w

It’s hard to imagine our events without Jim, but we know that top is going down permanently, because it never rains in Cadillac Heaven. We’ll miss you good friend.

June was a busy month for two West of the Lake Region members, health-wise.

First up, Marilyn Schweitzer, wife of Ron Schweitzer, our Membership Secretary (for life), is recovering at home following surgery. Ron tells us that Marilyn is doing well and that we can count on seeing her soon once in-person club events resume.

Ron declined to share the details of Marilyn’s surgery, but we have exclusive before and after photos, so you be the judge:

Left: Marilyn before surgery Above: Marilyn after surgery

Up next, Tom Orlando, Club Delinquent, fell off of a ladder and broke his leg in February. Once the quarantine was lifted, Tom had surgery to make his toes point in the correct direction. Tom won’t be able to walk on his own until after 4th of July or drive until August, but the before and after photos he provided show that the surgery was successful.

Charles Scallon of Western Springs turned 95 on June 11. Charles is a WWII veteran, owned an auto body shop for some time, and likes . So as a surprise, his granddaughter, Courtney Rolfes contacted Ron Schweitzer to see if he could arrange to have a '50s Cadillac come and park in front of her sister's house for about an hour.

Since the party/house was in Western Springs, Ron asked Andy Derr if he would be able to join in with his '39 LaSalle.

Charles really enjoyed the cars and Andy even took him for a ride in the '39.

They were all great people to spend some time with.

Cadillac Car Parade

Sunday, July 19, 2020 Sponsored by the West of the Lake Region of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club

Since we can’t hold our usual car shows at the senior living facilities due to social distancing guidelines, we’re

doing the next best thing by holding a collector car parade around several senior housing communities. To address village safety concerns, this event is only open to CLC members. Parade will travel through the villages of Elmhurst and Downers Grove covering approximately 18 miles. Feel free to decorate your car. In order to help us plan properly, we ask everyone who has computer access to register at

2022 WOTLR Grand National Update

The 2022 Grand National will be at The Westin in Lombard, June 19th through June 26th, 2022.

As you may or may not know (laugh, laugh) the COVID-19 Virus has put us all in a tailspin and the WOTLR 2022 GN Committee was no exception.

Needless to say our April, and then May meetings had to be cancelled. And before anyone mentions that “why didn’t you just have a Zoom meeting”, keep in mind that our “lunch” meetings usually turn into lunch AND dinner meetings, and the thought of being in front of a computer screen for several hours didn’t seem too appealing. But know that, based on the timeline set by the CLC for regions hosting a Grand National, we’re still on schedule and a little ahead on one or two tasks.

We are planning a July meeting, depending on what happens and what rules are in place for our state going forward.

Hopefully everything will get back to, at least, semi-normal very soon. Stay safe and healthy!

Your 2022 Grand National Co-Chair People,

Glenn Brown, Valerie Brown, Elaine Link, Frank Link, Willie Garrett & Dan Graziadei

MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES JUNE 30, 2020 The Zoom virtual meeting was called to order at 7:38pm by Director Fred Butalla. All Board members were in attendance. There were no visitors or new members on the call. There were 16 members on the call. During the month of May, flowers were sent to Carol Houtari, whose husband Jim, passed away. Flowers were also sent to Bill Buckingham, Jr. whose mother passed away. These are two historical losses for the WOTLR and CLC as a whole. Jim Rudnick passed at the beginning of June. WEBSITE—Fred Butalla The website is up and running although it still requires some updating. Please send photos of your car to be put on the website. The 2024 Grand National will have a separate link for registration. CAR PARADE—Fred Butalla The car parade that was to be held on June 20 was canceled. The Village of Elmhurst would not allow it to be held. We will now have a car parade in Elmhurst on Sunday, July 19. We will meet at 1p at The Clarion Hotel at 933 South Riverside Drive in Elmhurst. This event will be held in conjunction with the Allante Club and we will travel to Lexington Square, Providence Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, and Elmhurst Extended Care. Multiple loops will be made so that residence at these facilities will be able to get a good view of all of the cars. Vicki Hagstolz suggested that an online monetary donation be made to the Yorkfield/Elmhurst Food Pantry. There is a “donate” tab on their website. Their email address is: EYFP.org. If you donate please mention the WOTLR/CLC. NATIONAL NEWS—Glenn Brown Glenn is national president for the fourth time. CONGRATULATIONS GLENN!!! February 27, 2021, is the Winter Board Meeting which will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lunch will be at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The National Membership Drive will give “perks” for registering for multiple years. A Virtual Grand National is being finalized for September 2020. Classes and awards are to be determined. Kansas City Grand National cannot be re-scheduled. National Membership has dropped. There are just under 6900 members. The Fall Festival in Hickory Corners, Michigan, has been canceled for September 2020. Steve Chareas asked why membership is dropping. There was a lengthy discussion. The two main reasons are members selling their car because they can’t drive them anymore. Members are also passing away. Several thoughts and suggestions were discussed as to ways to build membership. Some included social media, advertising on E-bay, You Tube. JULY’S WOTLR MEETING—Fred Butalla 1) Meet in the parking lot of the American Legion Hall in Elmhurst on July 28. Bring a chair, sit by your car, no congregating, and maintain social distancing. 2) Virtual meeting July 28. Tom Orlando will put this question in the newsletter tomorrow to give additional members a chance to voice their opinion. Ron Schweitzer will also send out these questions in email form. What activities can we do as a club to keep people engaged during the pandemic? Some suggestions were: Starved Rock State Park Studebaker Museum in Indiana Route 66 to Wilmington A big concern is available restrooms. The meeting was adjourned at 9:57pm.
