Bruce Hornsby opens tour and new Guthrie Theater “Monday was a night of firsts: • The first full-fledged concert at the new Guthrie Theater. • The first concert of singer-pianist Bruce Hornsby’s solo tour. • The first time in music-biz history that a multiple-CD boxed set (retail price $50) was given out to each and every concertgoer. (NOTE: 921 sets that night!!) • The first time a fan was invited onstage at the Guthrie by the performer to make a request and shake hands, but this woman overstayed her welcome to the point that other concertgoers were shouting for “security.” This night of firsts was musically winning but, quite frankly, uncomfortably bizarre at times. Hornsby, 51, was chatty, genial and quick-witted. He showed a keen sense of pacing during his two-set, 135-minute performance and always seemed to know when to cut off the conversation — and the shouts from the fans. As was the case at the old Guthrie, concertgoers weren’t hesitant about taking advantage of the intimacy and anonymity of darkness; they had plenty to say to Hornsby, who asked for requests. Moreover, he was playing on the set of “Lost in Yonkers,” his grand piano perched in the grandma’s living room, which further stripped away the inhibitions. Suffice it to say, the best line of the night was delivered via a handwritten fan note: “Sorry for those drunken hillbillies.” Hornsby rolled with it. That’s the way he was at his piano, as well. He was an adventurous improviser with a respect for strong, soulful melodies and a wide musical vocabulary. The influences of many of his heroes could be heard in various pieces — Randy Newman, Keith Jarrett, Mose Allison, Elton John, , among others. Hornsby’s sound was distinctively southern, with plenty of jazz and classical mixed in. Several tunes were social commentaries about the South (“Talk of the Town,”The Way It Is”), and a few were hilarious romps (“The Dreaded Spoon,” an upcoming collaboration with bluegrass star Ricky Skaggs, and a piece about Donald Trump written for a musical whose key line was “we all should agree to pay homage to me”). Hornsby even tackled requests for songs he said were really fit for a band, not solo piano, and rewardingly reworked old favorites, turning “The Valley Road” into a funk-blues strut and starting “The Way It Is,” one of the prettiest protest songs ever, as an impressionist piece, eventually moving into a light classical passage and then some barrelhouse boogie.” New stuff on the blog Look Who’s Hanging! Get the 411 on the new Joan Osborne cd Premier vocalist and , Joan Osborne, will be releasing her Vanguard Records debut, “Pretty Little Stranger” on November 14th. Recorded in Nashville and produced by Grammy winner, Steve Buckingham, “Pretty Little Stranger” highlights the soulful sound of Joan Osborne with elements of country blues and Americana. This 12 song collection features six original tunes written by Joan including the first single, “Who Divided”, “Shake That Devil”, “After Jane” and the title track and also compositions by (“Please Don’t Tell Me How The Story Ends”), / (“Brokedown Palace”) and Patty Griffin (“What You Are”). Joan stated, “I would call this my version of a country record — some of it very traditional, some less so. It tells feelings and stories in very simple language, and I wanted to focus on that simple way of communicating, rather than be flowery and poetic. I needed to get down to the bare bones and I feel like we did a good job of doing that.” “Pretty Little Stranger” features some of music’s finest performers lending their talents including Vince Gill on “Time Won’t Tell,” Alison Krauss, “Holy Waters”, Sonny Landreth playing slide guitar on “Dead Roses” and providing harmony vocals on his own “When The Blue Hour Comes.” Joan Osborne had one of the biggest releases of the mid-90’s with “Relish” and participated in the historic and successful Lilith Fair Tour. She has worked with a myriad of artists like Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, The Chieftains and Bonnie Raitt. She toured with The Dead in the summer of 2004 and recently finished a tour with Phil Lesh & Friends. For up-to-the-minute AAA news... RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY READER - 10/4/06
