SATURDAY EVENING GOVERNOR’S ‘SOCK HOP’ ENTERTAINMENT Everyone please join us in your 1950’s Attire! We will see you at the blast! About Whistle Pigs

The Whistle Pigs Dance Band continues the tradition of versatile musical offerings. Contemporary music. Classic rock. Jazz. Rhythm and blues. It's hard to fit the Whistle Pigs into a single category. Entertaining Michiana audiences of all ages since 1993, these entertainers provide a polished and exciting musical experience.

The Whistle Pigs seven-piece dance band is a close-knit family of musicians who have performed with such groups as The Temptations, South Bend Symphony Orchestra, Charlie Daniels, Roomful of Blues, Jim Schwall, Electric Amish, Koko Taylor, Lonnie Mack, Pinetop Perkins, Bobby Vinton, Mary Wilson and The Supremes, The Birds, Lonnie Brooks, War, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Atlanta Rhythm Section and America.

Guitarist and vocalist Steve Whaley adds the right mix of rock and blues styling to complement the powerful lead vocals and aggressive guitar playing of Jamie Miller. Johnny B. Gayden brings the groovin' bass line to the front, while versatile drummer Dan Degucz rounds out the group.

The Common Prairie Dog Brass section features the talents of Rob Johnson on trumpet, Ed Lotter on trombone and Eric Atkins on saxophone. Their original charts reflect the sound of The Blues Brothers, Tower of Power, The Brian Setzer Orchestra and the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

The Association of Performing Arts Report says, "...the Whistle Pigs are a dance band that is easy to work with and warms up a crowd in no time at all. Members of the audience were up and dancing practically from the first number. Good vocals, good instrumentalists and good humor made them a winning package."

Why I am a candidate to be Governor Elect 2013-2014 of the Indiana District? My personal goal is to promote a positive Kiwanis environment enhancing growth of service in our communities, our district, and our world. As Kiwanians, we all know how valuable volunteers are in our communities. Kiwanians throughout the world give more volunteer hours than any other service organization in the world. Where would our communities be without our great organization? I realized volunteering early hours, late hours, and week-end hours was going to be a positive lifestyle serving along fellow Kiwanians as we follow the six objects of Kiwanis.

Service to others is how we can grow our membership. As we volunteer our time, talents and other resources in a positive manner in our communities, how can we not grow? If we don’t ask a friend, a neighbor, or a co-worker to attend a Kiwanis event, we can be assured of one thing, we will not grow. As Kiwanians, we must continuously strive to involve not only our members but our communities as we serve. Kiwanis service is powerful enough to change the tide in our membership.

16 HOOSIER KIWANIAN - MAY 2013

Colonel John L. McCulloch Governor 1920 and 1921 First Governor of the Indiana District

The following passage is from the “Seventy-Five Years of Kiwanis and Indiana” by John F. Stover

By the time the Second Convention of Kiwanis International, held in Providence, Rhode Island, June 25-27, 1918, Kiwanis had grown to more than 10,000 members in over 90 cubs, five in Canada and the rest in two dozen different states. As the convention convened in the early summer of 1918, some 250,000 American Doughboys were landing in France each month in an all out effort to win the war against the Germans. American patriotic fervor was a high pitch, and the delegates at Providence adopted a strong resolution dedicating Kiwanis to the winning of the war.

Many delegates at Providence felt a growing dissatisfaction with Allen Browne’s power in Kiwanis, but the matter postponed since it was felt Colonel John L. McCulloch that nothing controversial should be allowed to weaken the united war effort. Roe Fulkerson of Washington, D.C. and the editor of the GOVERNOR new Kiwanis magazine, “The Hornet”, nominated Perry Patterson 1920 J.L. “Path to a Cure” RILEY FUNDRAISING

It seems like only recently when several members of the Riley Kids Committee met with Dr. Yoder of the Wells Research Center and Kevin O’Keefe, Chairman of the Riley Children’s Foundation to discuss our next Kiwanis Riley campaign. But, that was in late 2008 or early 2009, after four years I forget, plus we had more than one meeting to discuss the campaign. We had just completed our previous four year campaign and were currently on a one year campaign to purchase a new M.I.C.U. (ambulance).

I guess the staff at Riley thought our last four year project was such a success, now they wanted Kiwanis to support another large project. This time they were suggesting we support a research project which would be a completely new idea for Kiwanis. After more meetings, much discussion and a tour of the Wells Research Center, the committee agreed this would be a great project. So, the decision was made to support Path to a Cure the research of Type 1 Diabetes known as Juvenile- onset Diabetes. Campaign The idea of this project not only touched some on the committee, but we felt it meets the Kiwanis goal of helping children. Also, diabetes was selected over some other research projects offered because it is such a serious disease that can never be cured at this time. To meet our Now we are in the fourth and final year, so we need to have a record setting year to four-year keep our promise to Riley and to the children affected by this disease. Four governors have now each spent over a year of their life committed to this project. I can’t tell you commitment anything new, but Kiwanis needs your help with a final big push to help Governor Ted break all records before September 30. to Riley Hospital I would encourage each of you to take a few minutes and visit the Indiana District for Children. website, then click on Riley Hospital. There are some brochures you can easily print off and take to a club meeting to talk to your Kiwanis members maybe as a program. It tells you that approximately 216 children are admitted to Riley each year with diabetes or about 4700 outpatient visits are made to Riley each year by children with diabetes. We need to raise These children definitely need the support of Kiwanis to improve their lives. a total of There is one interesting article on the website about Dr. Ryan Anderson Ph.D. using zebra fish in his research to find a cure. It tells how he can watch the embryos as they $209,302.44 develop in a Petri dish. Their pancreas is similar to a human pancreas and by them being completely clear he can watch as it develops. I don’t want to simply tell you from October 1, 2012 the story, so as they say, “Read the Book”. The Indiana District website offers much information, so encourage your club members to visit it and learn much more than we to September 30, 2013 can tell in any article we write. - Don
