Dear Customer, It is now one year since we produced our first all-singing, all-dancing, colour catalogue! Although the plain-text listings always seemed to have a certain appeal, the idea of going back to them now feels absurd. We hope you have enjoyed the improvements as much as we have enjoyed working on them. There are plenty of enticing new releases again this month: you will see superb Monteverdi from I Fagiolini and a beautiful recital of French Song from Christiane Karg on the page opposite; Ivan Fischer’s latest Mahler instalment can be found on p.4 in the shape of Symphony no.3; also on p.4 is a new recital from Diana Damrau focused entirely on grand opera arias by Meyerbeer; String Quartets by Delius and Elgar is the highlight from Naxos and also has the privilege of being our Disc of the Month for May (below); Sony have come up trumps again with, amongst many other stellar releases, brilliant new recordings from Jonas Kaufmann (singing all of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde) and Semyon Bychkov (conducting works by Franz Schmidt and Richard Strauss); Lully’s Armide from Les Talens Lyriques and Christophe Rousset is beautifully presented by Aparte (p.7); and last, but certainly not least, is the stunning new DVD boxset from Fugue State Films devoted to Max Reger, featuring over 15 hours of content including documentaries and filmed performances (p.50). Special offers for May/June include the complete catalogues of Australian Eloquence, Berlin Classics and Somm. We also have Hyperion’s Helios reissue series in a multibuy offer, ‘Home of Opera’ and ‘Icon’ titles from Warner Classics, a small selection of boxsets from DG and Decca at very special prices, and DVDs and Blu-rays from Italian opera specialists, Dynamic. We have also been advised that brand new offers from DG and Decca are imminent, but details had sadly not materialised before we had to go to print. Information will be on our website as soon as it becomes available, and we will be doing our best to feature full listings in the June catalogue. Don’t forget that we have two bank holidays coming up, so our offices will be closed for extra days on Monday 1 and Monday 29 May. Thank you as always for your ongoing loyalty and custom - it is certainly much appreciated. Enjoy browsing! For both men, however, the war had a profound effect upon their later work, and it is impossible to separate their two remarkable string quartets from the historical circumstances of their creation. The powerful outer movements of Elgar’s String Quartet in E minor frame a wistful and sombre Andante piacevole. Delius was dissatisfied with the first, three-movement version of his Quartet and revised the score. On this recording the final 1917 version is followed by the original versions of the opening movement and of the Late Swallows slow movement, offering a rare glimpse into Delius’s compositional workshop. • Debussy's Pelléas Et Mélisande
Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore Pelléas et Mélisande is a strange, haunting work, typical of the Symbolist movement in that it hints at truths, desires and aspirations just out of reach, yet allied to a longing for transcendence is a tragic, self-destructive element whereby everybody suffers and comes to grief or, as in the case of the lovers, even dies - yet frequent references to fate and Arkel’s ascribing that doleful outcome to ineluctable destiny, rather than human weakness or failing, suggest that they are drawn, powerless, to destruction like moths to the flame. The central enigma of Mélisande’s origin and identity is never revealed; that riddle is reflected in the wispy, amorphous property of the music itself, just as the text, adapted from Maeterlinck’s play, is vague and allusive, rarely open or direct in its expression of the characters’ velleities. The opera was highly innovative and controversial, a gateway to a new style of modern music which discarded and re-invented operatic conventions in a manner which is still arresting and, for some, still unapproachable. It is a work full of light and shade, sunlit clearings in gloomy forest, foetid dungeons and sea-breezes skimming the battlements, sparkling fountains, sunsets and brooding storms - all vividly depicted in the score. Any francophone Francophile will delight in the nuances of the parlando text. There is no ensemble or choral element beyond the brief sailors’ “Hoé! Hisse hoé!” offstage and only once do voices briefly intertwine, at the climax of the lovers' final duet.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 14, 2014 Contact: Erika Overturff (Founder and Artistic Director), (402) 541-6946 Print-quality photos are available for download here. BALLET NEBRASKA'S NUTCRACKER BLENDS NEW FEATURES, OLD FAVORITES The premiere of a new French scene and the debut of a new Sugar Plum Fairy and are among the features of this year's edition of Ballet Nebraska's The Nutcracker. “I’m always looking for ways to maintain the ballet’s story and charm, while adding fresh touches,” said artistic director Erika Overturff, who choreographs and stages the holiday classic, as well as dancing the role of the Snow Queen. “Personalizing the ballet for your own company and audience is something that every company has done since the beginning – it’s part of the tradition of The Nutcracker.” The French scene – often called “Mirletons” or “Dance of the Reed Flutes” – gets a makeover this year, with new concept, choreography and costumes, Overturff said. “I was listening to the music and thinking about things we associate with France,” she said, “and I thought: What could be more French than cooking? I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but I can tell you that the new scene involves a ballerina, a chef with a lot of assistants, and a cake.” A signature role in The Nutcracker, Overturff said, is that of the Sugar Plum Fairy – the benign ruler of the Kingdom of Sweets, who welcomes the young heroine, Clara, and commands a series of spectacular dances in her honor. Making her debut as the Sugar Plum Fairy this year is Vivi DiMarco, a dancer in her third season with Ballet Nebraska.

PELES JONATHAN WHITAKER ELIZABETH AVERSA A DOCUMENT Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in the School of Music in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2016 Copyright Jennifer Graham Stephenson 2016 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT As art reflects life, so too does it hold a mirror to the lives of the people who create it. The turbulent events of the first decades of the twentieth century, including two World Wars and the rise of Italian Fascism and German Nazism in the 1920s and 30s, affected millions of lives across several continents. This document explores the ways in which Luigi Dallapiccola (1904– 1973) and Gian Carlo Menotti (1911–2007) voice their reactions to these events in their operas, Il Prigioniero (1948) and The Consul (1950). Italian composer Luigi Dallapiccola spent twenty months in internment during the First World War, and would be forced on several occasions to go into hiding during the Second World War. His opposition to Mussolini and the Italian Fascists, coupled with his quasi–obsession with internment and freedom, led to his composition of three works of “protest music,” of which Il Prigioniero is the second. Il Prigioniero tells the story of a prisoner of the Inquisition, his attempt at escape and eventual capture. Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti emigrated to the United States in 1928, at age seventeen, and spent a great much of his time traveling and working in various countries.

  • A Study on the Gender Imbalance Among Professional Choreographers Working in the Fields of Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance
Where are the female choreographers? A study on the gender imbalance among professional choreographers working in the fields of classical ballet and contemporary dance. Jessica Teague August 2016 This Dissertation is submitted to City University as part of the requirements for the award of MA Culture, Policy and Management 1 Abstract The dissertation investigates the lack of women working as professional choreographers in both the UK and the wider international dance sector. Although dance as an art form within western cultures is often perceived as ‘the art of women,’ it is predominately men who are conceptualising the works and choreographing the movement. This study focuses on understanding the phenomenon that leads female choreographers to be less likely to produce works for leading dance companies and venues than their male counterparts. The research investigates the current scope of the gender imbalance in the professional choreographic field, the reasons for the imbalance and provides theories as to why the imbalance is more pronounced in the classical ballet sector compared to the contemporary dance field. The research draws together experiences and statistical evidence from two significant branches of the artistic process; the choreographers involved in creating dance and the Gatekeepers and organisations that commission them. Key issues surrounding the problem are identified and assessed through qualitative data drawn from interviews with nine professional female choreographers. A statistical analysis of the repertoire choices of 32 leading international dance companies quantifies and compares the severity of the gender imbalance at the highest professional level. The data indicates that the scope of the phenomenon affects not only the UK but also the majority of the Western world.
