MARKET REPORT FOR THURSDAY 14th SEPTEMBER 2017 PRIME CATTLE

Auctioneer: Russell Jeanes 01507 350508/07966 104101 We had a good solid trade in all sections of market today, the clean cattle average was 203.45ppk. Kev Chafer of Burgh topped the market in ppk with a heifer at 230ppk, the top price per head was from J C Scholey at Baumber with a steer at £1,203. CLEAN CATTLE - The top priced steer per kilo was from John Scholey with a Limousin x weighing 579kg and selling for 206.5ppk. Top price per head was a larger animal from the same home achieving £1,203.

Top price per kilo in the heifers was from Kev Chafer of Burgh weighing 485kg and selling for 230.5ppk. The top price per head was from G H Parker (North Cotes) Ltd weighing 671kg and selling for £1,137.

G H Parker (North Cotes) Ltd also topped the drape cow section with a Limousin x cow selling to 145ppk.

STORE CATTLE – An excellent trade in the store cattle again today. The top price in the store ring was a very smart Limousin x heifer from Steadman Partners of Bucknall at £1,140. The top price steer was from G L & M Carr of Skidbrooke and W G Hall & Son of South Ormsby at £1030. The top price per kilo was from W G Hall & Son with pair of smart Limousin x Angus steers achieving 237ppk. MANY MORE CATTLE CAN BE SOLD TO ADVANTAGE. SHEEP TODAY WAS OUR 2nd ANNUAL SPECIAL SHEEP SALE OF BREEDING SHEEP & STORE LAMBS Auctioneer Paul Robinson Tel 01507 621111 PRIME LAMBS – A good trade this week with the overall average being 157.82ppk and £70 per head. In pounds per head, the top price was from Charles Tagg of Candlesby selling lambs to £85. The top price in ppk was from Jack Gratton of Holbeach at 173ppk.

DRAPE EWES – The top price in the Drape ewes was from N Warden from Partney at £80.

M.V. ACCREDITED TUPS – A very good trade overall with almost all the tups sold at a good trade. Russell Jeanes topped the trade at 455gns, closely followed by Jeff & Angela Crust, Edward Middleton’s & Joe Coulson’s Charollais at 450gns, 430gns and 425gns. Almost all MV tups sold for over 300gns.

NON M.V. ACCREDITED TUPS – The strong tup trade continued with the non-accredited tups with one of Shelia Kent’s Texel tups selling for 320gns. Jack Gratton’s Wragby Show Champion tup selling 250gns.

GIMMERS – A good trade in the gimmer section today. P L Robinson topped the market at £146, followed by P E Roe & Son Ltd at £138 and C & E Wright at £130.

BREEDING EWES – A good entry of breeding ewes forward today with flock dispersals from Shelia Kent and N G & T A Read (Farms) & Co and flock re- organisations from Stenigot Estate Company Ltd and R M & E F Davey. The top price was £122 achieved by R M & E F Davey, N G & T A Read Farms & Co and Shelia Kent. Stenigot Estates sold a run of 200 Lleyn x 3 – 4 crop ewes to £92. STORE LAMBS – Store lambs sold well today with the top price of £97 from N Warden, closely followed by S D Swindell at £70. A run of 81 from J H Jewitt sold to £66, a run of 50 from Mark & Isla Brumby sold to £56 and a run of 38 from Middleton Bros sold to £68.50. NUMBER OF MOVES A number of store cattle purchasers have been asking for us to announce the number of moves an animal has made. This is due to restrictions on the number of moves put in place, mainly by large retailers.

This is a hot topic in the industry and the Livestock Auctioneers Association (LAA), under whose conditions we operate, have taken the view that as there is no uniform policy throughout the meat industry to which we should adhere. For example, some restrictions are 3 moves whereas others are 4 moves. Some consider a move to be a change of ownership, others consider a move to be a change of holding. Therefore the LAA advises that its members should NOT announce the number of moves that store cattle have made.

In accordance with this we WILL NOT be announcing the number of moves an animal has made, until advised otherwise.

We invite purchasers who this may affect to view the passports of the animals they are interested in buying ahead of purchase. This can be done in the Market Office ahead of the sale, under the supervision of Mrs Baxter. The purchaser can then reassure themselves that the movement histories of animals are in accordance with the policy of their end market.

We have clearly stated our position regarding the market, which is that we are committed to running a livestock market in Louth as long as it remains viable. We are very conscious of its importance to the agricultural community and to the town and are continuing with our discussions with the Council.
