MIC CONWAY / “MAGIC MIC” : Children’s Shows 26 GARNET AVE, LILYFIELD NSW 2040 : 0429 909 990 m : [email protected] - 4 - WORKSHOP : HOME-MADE INSTRUMENTS At a young age Mic Conway was inspired by the jug band tradition; music made with bottles, washboards, brushes, jugs, banjos, guitars, kazoos and more. He is living his dream of passing on a passion for home- made music to a new generation. Mic teaches children, step by step, to make and play simple instruments: from the tin can banjo and the drinking straw flute to the rubber-glove bassoon! It’s amazing what you can create from old containers, tape, string and other things you find around the house. In 2008, Mic visited schools around Port Fairy, conducting workshops and rehearsals. An aghast Port Fairy Folk Festival audience comprised of parents, fellow students and festival goers witnessed 400 primary school children playing songs like “Jug Band Music” and “Mama Don’t Allow” on instruments they had made themselves. • MIC CONWAY with ROBBIE LONG (Australia)
MIC CONWAY with ROBBIE LONG (Australia) Sydney-based, ARIA award winning Mic Conway is an singer, musician, song writer, fire eater, magician, tap dancer, actor, multi-instrumentalist, juggler, latex mask maker, props builder and puppeteer. "Street of Dreams" is the new collaboration between Mic Conway and flat-picking guitar champion and multi- instrumentalist Robbie Long. Stripped back, irreverent and shameless, Mic and Robbie play unusual and idiosyncratic tunes that make jaws drop, toes tap and sides split. Featuring some Captain Matchbox favourites like “My Canary Has Circles Under His Eyes” and a fiery version of "Masochism Tango" as well as a swag of Conway including "Jug Band Man" (which was featured on Spicks and Specks, September 2011). This is Mic the crooner – inspired by Al Bowlly, The Ink Spots, Fats Waller and the Hoosier Hotshots. From the moody and dark "Street of Dreams" to the illusions of life and showbiz in "Paper Moon"; from the sculptural and pun-filled construction of a spare-parts lover in "The Dummy Song", to blaming a building for the loss of love in "Winchester Cathedral" – these are songs with strange, dreamlike images. Some classic tin pan melodies, some bizarre originals, "Street of Dreams" is surreal vaudeville with a sense of humour. Croon to melt your ears. The duo has already graced the stages of Melbourne's Comedy Festival and the Melbourne Cabaret Festival, as well as a swag of other events from Darwin Festival to Cobargo. Mic was born into a family of vaudeville theatre and opera. In the 1970s, together with his brother Jim Conway, Mic founded the Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band.

The night marked the fifth ARIA win for Tawadros and Tognetti. “It’s been a hard year for musicians everywhere - like me, most have had no live shows and it’s devastating. It’s some much-needed light in a very challenging year,” said Joseph. On winning Best Classical Album with Richard Tognetti, Erin Helyard said, “Richard & I are old mates and are delighted to have won. We wanted to present a kind of history of the evolution of the eighteenth-century violin sonata, and the city of Vienna.

  • A'court, BILL (West Adelaide)
A A’COURT, BILL (West Adelaide): Acourt was placed on Oliver and to keep this man from taking his sensational marks gives a man plenty to do. Acourt did not let him do too much, and played a good game beside.1 Father of star West Adelaide ruckman of the 1950s Fred A’Court (profiled below), Bill A’Court was a strong defender who also played with West. He debuted with the club in 1909, and was a key member that same year of its winning grand final team against Port Adelaide. He went on to play in the premiership sides of 1911 and 1912 as well. From 1909 to 1915 A’Court played 83 SAFL games and kicked four goals. A’COURT, FRED (West Adelaide): Fred A’Court was a stalwart of West Adelaide sides during the club’s nightmare decade of the 1950s, when four grand finals were contested without success, all against Port Adelaide. He commenced with West in 1949, and over the ensuing 11 seasons played a total of 159 league games and kicked 110 goals. In January 1954, A’Court applied for a clearance to VFL club Richmond, claiming that, if he made the move, he would be £15 a week better off financially, but West Adelaide refused the application and he continued to play for the Blood and Tars for the remainder of his career. A tough, tireless and talented ruckman, A’Court - popularly known as ‘Boof’ - represented South Australia eight times, kicking 10 goals. AAMODT, COLIN (North Adelaide): In a brainy display of football Aamodt showed all the fleetness of foot that enabled him to run a place in a Stawell Gift.

  • Fun Practical Ways to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Fun practical ways to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Music With Anything is a terrific, interactive performance / workshop where Mic Conway shows children how they can use everyday items from around the house to create music. Things like tin can banjos, drinking straw flutes, rubber glove bassoons, plastic cup chook noise makers, box bass, gum leaves, bottles and hose trumpets are just SOME of the fun and simple to make instruments that Mic demonstrates and plays. After the performance, comes the workshop and Mic gets everyone building two ‘easy to make’ instruments. He provides materials and only requires children to be able to tie knots and use scissors as he guides them step by step through the making process. Mic and staff can assist where necessary. After making their instruments and briefly learning how the instruments make their musical sounds, a few children are selected to play some of Mic’s instruments that he demonstrated earlier and all the other workshop participants, using their newly made instruments, form the “Big Band”. Led by Mic, this enthusiastic group of young musicians play the Australian classic Waltzing Matilda. Mic Conway formed his first band (The Jellybean Jug Band) while in secondary school with his brother Jim. By the 1970’s they were receiving national acclaim as The Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band. The band released four studio albums two of which went gold, each selling over 35,000 copies in Australia alone. In the 1990’s Mic won a coveted Aria award for his children’s album ‘Whoopee’. He also appeared in Play School, Mr Squiggle and regularly on the Humphrey B.

  • “Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago.
