17 COMMISSIONER JERRY B. KURZ

Jerry B. Kurz returns for his 27th season of Arena Football and fourth season as the AFL’s Commissioner. Out-tenured only by the creator of Arena Football, Jim Foster, Kurz has dedicated his life to furthering the sport with a strong business ethic and core values meant to bring the highest quality product to the ever-growing fan base of Arena Football fans.

In his time as the president of the , the League saw extensive growth in small-to-midsized markets, building an extremely dedicated fan base across the country. That foundation helped to fuel the return of the Arena Football League in 2010 after a year on hiatus due to financial instability. Kurz and a group of enthusiastic investors arranged the acquisition of the AFL’s assets in bankruptcy court in late 2009 and revived the League in early 2010, fulfilling the promise that Arena Football would be played in 2010.

Kurz has also served as the AFL’s Vice President of International Development, where he was in charge of the League’s international exposure. During his tenure, he was responsible for administering the H3 Visa program, allowing international players to play for AFL teams stateside. He also arranged and executed all internationally played games for the Arena Football League.

Arena Football isn’t Kurz’s only claim to fame. He is also a founding member of Gridiron Enterprises, Inc., a sports consulting firm based out of Chicago. Gridiron Enterprises, consisting of Kurz, Foster and attorney William Niro, is the original founder of the AFL. Kurz has been a player, coach, general manager and owner during his lifelong involvement with the game of football. He is also a member of four football Halls of Fame, including membership in the first class of the Arena Football Hall of Fame as well as membership in the arenafootball2 Hall of Fame.

Kurz attended the University of Oklahoma as an undergraduate and later earned his Juris Doctor Degree at Northern Illinois. Kurz is a licensed attorney in Illinois and operated a law firm with his wife, Kathryn Hall, for 20 years. Jerry and his wife, Kathryn, have one son named Matthew, who currently serves as the Director of Player Personnel for the AFL.

The bottoms of the nets are eight (8) feet above the ground. • Sideline barriers are 48 inches high and made of high-density foam rubber. EQUIPMENT • The official football is the same size and weight as the ball. Each ball is manufactured by Spalding, a division of Russell Corporation. PLAYERS AND FORMATIONS • Eight players on the field; 21-man active roster; three-man inactive roster. • Players may play both offense and defense. • Substitution: Coaches are permitted to substitute players at will. • Four (4) offensive players must line up on the line of scrimmage. • Three (3) defensive players must be down linemen (in a three- or four-point stance). One may blitz on either side of the center. Alignment is two-or-more yards off the line of scrimmage. No stunting or twisting. • Offensive motion: One receiver may go in forward motion before the snap.

TIMING • Four (4) 15-minute quarters with a 15-minute halftime. • The clock stops for out-of-bounds plays or incomplete passes only in the last minute of each half and when the referee deems it necessary for penalties, injuries or timeouts. • Each team is allowed three (3) timeouts per half.

MOVEMENT OF THE BALL AND SCORING • Four (4) downs are allowed to advance the ball ten (10) yards for a first down, or to score. • Six (6) points for a touchdown. • One (1) point for a conversion by place kick after a touchdown, two (2) points for a conversion by drop kick and two (2) points for a successful run or pass after a touchdown. • Three (3) points for a field goal by placement or four (4) points for a field goal by drop kick. • Two (2) points for a safety. KICKING • Kickoffs are from the goal line. Kickers may use a one-inch tee. • Punting is illegal. On fourth down, a team may go for a first down, touchdown or field goal. • The receiving team may field any kickoff or missed field goal that rebounds off the net. • Any untouched kickoff, which is out of bounds, will be placed at the 20-yard line or the place where it went out-of- bounds, whichever is more advantageous to the receiving team. PASSING • Receivers must have one foot inbounds for a catch. A forward pass that rebounds off the rebound net or sideline barrier is a live ball and is in play until it touches the playing surface. OVERTIME RULES • Overtime periods are 15 minutes for both the regular season and the playoffs. • Each team gets one (1) possession to score. If, after each team has had one possession, one team is ahead, that team wins. If the teams are tied after each has had a possession, the next team to score wins.

24 GLOSSARY OF TERMS

BALL IN THE STANDS – When a ball is thrown or bounces into the seats surrounding the playing field, the “lucky” fan that catches the ball keeps it.

DROP KICK – A drop-kicked FG is worth 4 points. A drop-kicked extra point is worth 2 points. Spokane Shock kicker Taylor Rowan was the last man to connect on a two-point dropkick (7/22/2011 vs. Jacksonville).

IRONMAN – Signifies participants playing both offense and defense.

FANS – More than 26 million fans have experienced an AFL game in the League’s 24-year history. Last year, in 2011, the AFL drew 1,338,544 fans in the regular season.

“MAC” AND “JACK” – “Mac” may rush the QB straight on without stunting, twisting or drop-back coverage. “Jack” must stay within an imaginary box behind the line of scrimmage. Either LB may cover the fullback or tight end.

OFFENSIVE MOTION – Unlike stadium-played football, one offensive back may go into forward motion prior to the snap of the ball.

OVERTIME – Arena Football has a unique overtime rule: If a contest is tied after regulation, teams will play a 15-minute overtime. Each team will have one opportunity to score. If, after each team has had one chance to score, the game is tied, the first team to score is crowned the winner.

REBOUND NETS – Goal-side rebound nets extend outward from each upright. The nets are 30-feet wide, 32-feet high and extend to 40 feet above the playing surface. The bottom bars of the frames are positioned eight (8) feet above the surface. The “scoring area” is nine-feet wide and 15-feet high. Nets are stretched taut so that a missed kick attempt will rebound off the net and back into the field of play. Once the ball caroms off the net, it’s live.

SIDELINE BARRIERS – Similar to the sideboards that surround a hockey rink, the sideline barrier encircles the playing surface. The barrier is made of a high-density foam pad, measuring four (4) inches thick.

STUNTING OR TWISTING – When a defensive lineman is rushing the passer, there’s no “stunting” or “twisting.” In other words, linemen are required to power past offensive linemen.

TIGHT END – One offensive lineman must declare himself a tight end prior to the snap by simply raising his arm and “declaring” himself a tight end. The Mac (rush-eligible) linebacker must line-up on the opposite side of the center from the tight end.

TWO-WAY PLAYERS – One of the most “throwback” features of the Arena Football League is the fact that the game features eight-on-eight football, where at times, some players will play both offense and defense.

Game #1 Iowa @ Spokane

Barnstormers Win OT Thriller in Season Opener (1-0)

Spokane, WA. – The Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League got off to a great start on Monday night with an impressive 69-63 overtime win against the Spokane Shock. The win marked the first time the Barnstormers have beaten the Shock in Spokane along with the first win for the franchise under the helm of Head Coach Mike Hohensee.

Iowa jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on the game’s first play from scrimmage as QB J.J. Raterink connected with WR Jesse Schmidt for a 30 yard score. The dynamic duo would hook up for 3 additional scoring plays on the night. However the Shock were just as sharp, matching the Barnstormers score for score throughout the first half. The Barnstormers Jason Simpson put Iowa up 35-28 with a 58 kickoff return for a touchdown. However Spokane countered with a 5 yard scoring run by QB to tie the game at 35-35 as the teams headed to the locker room.

Iowa’s quick strike offense continued into the second half as Raterink connected twice with rookie WR Chris Matthews for scores. LB returned a failed onside kick 6 yards for a touchdown, putting the Barnstormers up by 14 late in the game. However, Spokane quickly narrowed the lead to 7 before tying the game in the final minute when they returned a Craig Camay 48 yard field goal attempt the length of the field for a score.

Entering overtime Iowa’s hopes looked grim, especially after Spokane won the coin toss. However the Barnstormers defense forced QB to make an errand throw that was intercepted by Iowa’s Jason Simpson. Two plays later Raterink found newcomer for a 30 yard TD that sealed the 69-63 victory for the Barnstormers. Other bright spots for the Iowa were DB Cameron McGlenn (9 tackles, 2 INT, 1FR), DL Alfred Peterson (2 sacks) and Camay (9- 9 on PAT’s).

Game #2: Iowa vs. Utah

Blaze Spoil Barnstormers Home Opener (1-1)

03/17/2012 10:36 P

Des Moines, Iowa – It wasn’t the St. Patrick’s Day green beer specials, but rather the dismal Barnstormers performance that left the opening night crowd of 8,258 feeling a little nauseous as they left Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday night. The Barnstormers proved to be no match on this night for the fierce Utah Blaze pass rush, which recorded 8 sacks in route to a 69-49 victory over Iowa.

The Barnstormers jumped out to their only lead, 7-0 when QB J.J. Raterink connected with WR Jesse Schmidt for a 5 yard touchdown just :57 seconds into the game. However, Utah responded with three straight touchdown drives to go ahead 20-7 and never looked back. Blaze QB had the hot hand, throwing for 282 yards and 5 while running for 2 additional scores.

In typical Arena Football fashion, the teams traded each other score for score for much of the next two quarters. Iowa closed to within 6 points 41-35, when DL Justin Mincey fell on a Grady fumble in the endzone for a Barnstormers touchdown. However Utah dominated the fourth quarter outscoring the Iowa 28-14 to seal the victory.

With the victory, Utah improves to 1-1 on the season, while the Barnstormers fall to an identical 1-1 record. Iowa has a bye next week, before returning home two weeks from tonight, Saturday March 31 when they take on the Chicago Rush at 7:05pm. Great seats are available for purchase at the Wells Fargo Arena box office, by calling the Barnstormers at 515.633.2255 or online at www.theiowabarnstormers.com.

Game #3: Iowa vs. Chicago

Barnstormers Drop Overtime Heartbreaker (1-2)

03/31/2012 11:18 PM

Des Moines, Iowa – The Iowa Barnstormers dropped another hard fought battle as they fell to the Chicago Rush 62-61 in overtime on Saturday night before 8,472 fans at Wells Fargo Arena. With the loss, the Barnstormers fall to 1-2 on the young season, while Chicago keeps their perfect record intact, improving to 3-0.

Chicago opened the scoring when QB Russ Michna found WR Terrance Turner to take a 7-0 lead. Iowa responded to tie the game 7-7 when QB J.J. Raterink connected with WR Jesse Schmidt for the first of 3 touchdowns. The Barnstormers exploded in the second quarter, scoring 33 points and taking a 40-28 lead into halftime.

The team’s traded scores throughout the third quarter but Chicago rallied from a 47-34 deficit to take a 48-47 lead as Michna hooked up with WR for two scores. The Barnstormers responded as FB Rodney Filer found the end zone from 1 yard out for his third rushing TD of the night. A two point conversion by Schmidt put Iowa up 55-48, but once again Chicago rallied as Michna found WR with :17 seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime.

In Overtime Iowa had possession first and drove the length of the field. Raterink connected with rookie WR Chris Matthews on a spectacular play from 14 yards out. However Barnstormers kicker Craig Camay missed a costly PAT giving Iowa just a 6 point lead. Chicago replied with a 35 yard drive that was capped by a 1 yard TD run by former Barnstormer, J.J. Payne to tie the game at 61-61. Rush kicker Mike Salerno came on and redeemed himself for several earlier misses by drilling the PAT through the uprights to give Chicago the 62-61 victory.

The Barnstormers are back on the road next week, as they head to Pittsburgh to battle the Power on Friday April 6. Iowa returns home on Saturday, April 14 when they take on the Arizona Rattlers at 7:05pm. Great seats are available for purchase at the Wells Fargo Arena box office, by calling the Barnstormers at 515.633.2255 online at www.theiowabarnstormers.com.

Game #4 Iowa @ Pittsburgh

Barnstormers Blackout Power 55-42 (2-2)

04/06/2012 8:39 PM

The Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League used a complete team effort to earn another road victory Friday night as they defeated the Pittsburgh Power 55-42 at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA. With the win, Iowa improves to 2-2 on the season, while Pittsburgh falls to 1-3. The victory was the Barnstormers second win on the road this season, after winning just once away from home all of last season.

The first half was a back and forth battle between the two teams. Iowa took a 7-0 lead on the first of two first half 11 Rodney Filer touchdowns. Pittsburgh responded as WR PJ Berry scored on a 30 yard pass to tie the game 7-7 at the end of 15 minutes. The second quarter was much of the same. Iowa took a 20-14 lead when LB John Mohring recovered a Craig Camay kickoff in the end zone for a Barnstormers touchdown. However Pittsburgh came right back as Berry returned the ensuing kickoff 57 yards for a touchdown. The teams headed to the locker room with the Power holding a narrow 28-27 lead.

Iowa came out strong, scoring the first 14 points of the second half. DB Jason Simpson celebrated his 29th birthday by recording back to back interceptions to give Iowa the 41-28 lead. Pittsburgh narrowed the lead to 41-35 when QB Andrico Hines found WR Mike Washington from 5 yards out as time expired in the third quarter.

Iowa took the ball to open the 4th quarter and Head Coach Mike Hohensee found himself with his biggest dilemma of the young season. Faced with a 4th and 6deep in their own territory, the Barnstormers gambled and the gamble paid off as QB J.J. Raterink connected with WR Chris Matthews for a 44 yard score, increasing Iowa’s lead to 48-35. Filer added his 3rd TD of the night with less than two minutes left to ice the game for Iowa.

The Barnstormers return home one week from tomorrow, Saturday, April 14 when defending National Conference Champion Arizona Rattlers come to town. Tickets can be purchased at the Wells Fargo Arena Box office, by calling the Barnstormers at 515-633-2255, or online at www.theiowabarnstormers.com.

Game #5: Iowa vs. Arizona

Iowa Storms Past Arizona 56-54 (3-2)

04/14/2012 11:20 PM

Des Moines, Iowa – In a game that featured a tornado warning, a lightning strike, a power outage and a fire alarm, the Iowa Barnstormers were able to maintain their focus well enough to win their second straight game of the season. After nearly 4 hours, when the clock finally ran out, the Barnstormers found themselves victorious with a 56-54 win over the Arizona Rattlers. With the win, Iowa improves to 3-2 on the season, while Arizona falls to an identical 3-2 record

Arizona opened the scoring just seconds into the game when they recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff in the end zone to take a quick 7-0 lead. However the Barnstormers responded when QB J.J. Raterink connected with WR Jesse Schmidt from 14 yards out to tie the game 7-7. . With Arizona leading 28-27 with seven minutes remaining in the second quarter, the game was halted for approximately 30 minutes due to a lightning strike and subsequent power outage. When the two teams returned to the field, they continued to match each other in typical Arena Football fashion, ending the first half knotted at 34-34.

With the game tied at 40-40, Iowa took the lead for good when Raterink again connected with Schmidt, this time from 38 yards out. After being held to just 3 catches last week, Schmidt was back in his usual form chalking up 11 receptions for 129 yards and 6 touchdowns on the night. Iowa sealed the victory with a 4th quarter interception by DB followed by a 23 yard field goal from kicker Craig Camay. Raterink finished the night completing 23 of 33 for 257 yards, 7 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.

The Barnstormers are back on the road next week, as they head to Utah to battle the Blaze on Friday April 20. Iowa returns home on Saturday, April 28 when they take on the San Jose Sabercats at 7:05pm. Great seats are available for purchase at the Wells Fargo Arena box office, by calling the Barnstormers at 515.633.2255 online at www.theiowabarnstormers.com.

Game #6 Iowa @ Utah

Utah Blaze End Barnstormers Win Streak (3-3)

04/21/2012 6:54 AM

Salt Lake City, UT – The Iowa Barnstormers, winners of two straight, had their streak come to an abrupt halt on Friday night in Utah, as they fell 63-62 to the Blaze. Errors on special teams, which included two misplayed kickoffs and 3 missed PAT’s proved to be the difference. When the final gun sounded, Iowa found themselves on the short side of a 63- 62 loss, dropping them to 3-3 on the season. With the victory, Utah improves to 4-2, having defeated Iowa in both matchups this season.

Despite an efficient game from their offense, the Barnstormers defense could not contain the red hot Utah offense and QB Tommy Grady. Grady completed 27 or 39 passes for 281 yards and eight touchdowns. His favorite target on the night was WR Aaron Lesue, who hauled in 11 receptions for 166 yards and four touchdowns. All-league WR Jesse Schmidt had 4 receiving touchdowns of his own, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Barnstormers.

The Barnstormers seemed to be in control of most of the play throughout the game. Iowa held a narrow 47-42 lead at the start of a wild fourth quarter that saw the lead change hands 4 times. QB J.J. Raterink connected with Schmidt for his fourth TD of the night with just over one minute remaining to put the Barnstormers in front 62-56. Iowa then attempted a risky on-side kick that was recovered by Utah deep in Iowa territory. Grady then hit WR Ernie Pierce from 9 yards out for what proved to be the game winning score.

Next week the Barnstormers return to the friendly confines of Wells Fargo Arena as they battle the San Jose SaberCats on Saturday, April 28. Join us beginning at 5:30pm in the Budweiser Tap Room for our pre-game happy hour, featuring $1.00 Budweiser and Bud Light Drafts! Great seats are still available and can be purchased at the Arena box office, online at www.theiowabarnstormers.com

Game #8: Iowa @ Chicago

Chicago’s Second Half Rush Finishes Barnstormers (3-5) 05/06/2012 6:57 PM

Chicago, IL – For the second straight week, the Iowa Barnstormers played a strong first half. Entering the locker room up 28-24, Iowa had to feel good about their chances. However just like last week, the Barnstormers came out flat in the 3rd quarter as they were outscored 29-14 in the frame.

With Iowa narrowly trailing 45-42, WR Marco Thomas fielded a bouncing kickoff at the two yard line and while attempting to make a play and break free, he was tackled in the end zone for a Chicago safety. Not only did the Barnstormers now trail by five, but they also had to give possession of the football back to Chicago. The Rush took advantage as QB Russ Michna immediately connected with WR Terrance Turner on a 42 yard score, and they never looked back. The end result was a 61-50 victory for Chicago, who now improves to 6-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the Barnstormers fall to 3-5.

The Barnstormers did have some bright spots. WR Jesse Schmidt gave his usual performance, hauling in 13 passes for 194 yards and 3 touchdowns. Despite the safety, Thomas had his best day as a Barnstormer, catching 13 passes of his own. Meanwhile, Jason Simpson once again led the way on defense recording 7 tackles along with being a key factor in the return game.

Next week the Barnstormers return to friendly Wells Fargo Arena as they battle the Kansas City Command on Saturday, May 12. Celebrate Mother’s Day Weekend with the Barnstormers! Game #10: Iowa @ Jacksonville

Barnstormers Shark-Bitten Once Again in Jacksonville (4-6)

05/20/2012 8:02 AM

Jacksonville, FL – For the second straight year, the Iowa Barnstormers exited Jacksonville Veteran’s Memorial Arena with their worst loss of the season. The latest loss occurred Saturday night when Iowa fell to the Jacksonville Sharks by a score of 55-19. Jacksonville was dominant in all aspects of the game, as they led from start to finish and were never seriously contested. With the win, the Sharks improve to 4-5 on the season, while Iowa falls to 4-6 with the loss.

Iowa starting Quarterback J.J. Raterink left the game after just two series with what appeared to be a shoulder injury, and never returned. Head Coach Mike Hohensee handed the reins to rookie QB , who saw his first action of the season. Dieker struggled completing just 16 of 35 passes for 202 yards while throwing two interceptions and fumbling twice. The lone bright spot for Dieker was a 26 yard touchdown strike to WR Jesse Schmidt with just over four minutes remaining before halftime. The touchdown pass was his first in his professional career. Iowa headed to the locker room with a 31=7 disadvantage.

The second half was more of the same as Dieker faced constant pressure and the Iowa defense did little to stop the Sharks offense. WR racked up 8 receptions for 109 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Sharks and newly re- acquired DB Micheaux Robinson had a game-high 7 tackles and 2 interceptions on defense. QB finished the game completing 18 of 24 attempts and four touchdowns. Iowa managed to put together a couple of second half touchdown drives, but it wasn’t nearly enough as Jacksonville coasted to the 36 point victory.

Next week the Barnstormers return to Wells Fargo Arena as they battle the Spokane Shock on Friday, May 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05pm, but the gates open early at 5:30 for the Miller Lite Happy Hour. Join us from 5:30-6:30 in the Miller Lite Lounge at Wells Fargo Arena for $1.00 Miller and Miller Lite drafts! Game #11: Iowa vs. Spokane

Barnstormers Fall to Snock, 68-62 (4-7)

05/25/2012 10:44 PM

Des Moines, Iowa – The Iowa Barnstormers and Spokane Shock played a highly entertaining and physical game of Arena Football at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Friday night. When the dust settled, Spokane came out on top with a 68-62 victory. The win was their fifth in the last six games and improves their record to 6-4 on the season. Meanwhile Iowa falls to 4-7, having lost 5 of 6.

Both teams struggled offensively early, as Iowa held a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to the first of 6 touchdown receptions by standout WR Jesse Schmidt. However Spokane exploded for 28 second quarter points and took a 31-20 lead into the locker room.

QB led the charge for the Shock, completing 25 of 38 passes for 239 yards and 6 touchdowns. Iowa QB J.J. Raterink had a fine game of his own throwing for 323 yards and 7 touchdowns of his own. Raterink was knocked out of the game temporarily during the third quarter. However, rookie QB Chris Dieker took control and narrowed the Spokane lead to 41-34 when he connected with Schmidt for a 34 yard strike. But the Shock would respond as DB Paul Stephens returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards for a touchdown making the score 48-34 at the end of three quarters.

The fourth quarter was just as wild as the teams combined for seven touchdowns. Iowa rattled of 28 points in the final frame as Raterink threw for three touchdowns and added a fourth rushing. However, the Iowa Rally fell just short as the Barnstormers were unsuccessful in two onside kick attempts in the closing minutes of the contest.

The Barnstormers two game home stand continues next Friday night June 1st when the Cleveland Gladiators come to town. Kickoff is set for 7:05pm and the game will air live on the NFL Network. The first 3,500 fans through the gates will get a FREE rally towel courtesy of Casey’s. Tickets are available for purchase at the Wells Fargo Arena box office, by calling the Barnstormers at 515.633.2255 online at www.theiowabarnstormers.com.

Game 12: Iowa vs. Cleveland

Barnstormers Slay Gladiators 70-62 (5-7) 06/01/2012 11:03 PM

Des Moines, Iowa – The Iowa Barnstormers and Cleveland Gladiators engaged in a highly entertaining game in front of a Wells Fargo Arena crowd of 8,363 along with a nationwide crowd watching on NFL Network on Friday night. In the end, Iowa prevailed with a 70-62 victory. The win improves the Barnstormers record to 5-7 on the season, while Cleveland suffered their second straight loss to fall to a record of The Barnstormers offense was clicking on all cylinders Friday night, as they scored touchdowns on 10 of their 11 possessions. Iowa QB J.J. Raterink connected on 31 of 37 passes for 371 yards and a season high 9 touchdown passes. He added a tenth touchdown on a 1 yard run in the fourth quarter for good measure. WR Jesse Schmidt had another monster game, catching a franchise record 18 passes for 206 yards and 5 touchdowns. Cameron McGlenn led the Barnstormers defense with 15 tackles and his 5th interception of the season.

Both teams seemed to struggle early on as they felt each other out, resulting in a narrow 21-20 Iowa halftime advantage that is low for Arena Football standards. However, both teams cranked up the offense in the second half, combining for 13 touchdowns. Iowa never relinquished their halftime lead, and led by as much as 16 points, but the Gladiators, led by veteran QB John Dutton would not go away quietly. Dutton threw for 370 yards of his own on the night and cut the Barnstormers lead to just 8 points 3 times during the final quarter but could not get any closer. The game was Iowa’s first ever victory over the Gladiators, as they had lost two prior matchups, both of which took place in 2010.

The Barnstormers now hit the road for two crucial road games. First up is a Saturday night contest against the Arizona Rattlers on June 9th. This is followed by a June 16th contest in San Antonio against the Talons. Iowa returns home on Saturday, June 30th when the Pittsburgh Power come to town for the Barnstormers 4th annual Military Night presented by allied. Kickoff is set for 7:05pm. Tickets are available for purchase at the Wells Fargo Arena box office, by calling the Barnstormers at 515.633.2255 online at www.theiowabarnstormers.com.

Game 13: Iowa @ Arizona

Barnstormers Snake-Bitten in Arizona (5-8)

Phoenix AZ - The Iowa Barnstormers battled arguably the AFL's top team the Arizona Rattlers for 60 intense minutes on Saturday night at the U.S. Airways Arena in Phoenix. In the end, the gutsy effort fell just short with the Barnstormers falling by as score of 55-48. With the win , the Rattlers improve to 10-3 on the season, while Iowa falls to 5-8 with the loss.

Iowa started out slow and found themselves trailing 13-0 just minutes into the game . However, the Barnstormers battled back scoring on three straight drives to take a 21-20 lead with 3:45 left in the second quarter. The lead was short lived as Arizona would score twice in the final minute of the half, to take a 34-21 lead into the locker room.

As usual, Arizona Quarterback proved why he is one of the AFL's best. Davila sliced through the Iowa defense with precision, connecting on 24 of 29 passes for 336 yards and 7 touchdowns. Rattlers WR Trandon Harvey led the way with 4 touchdown receptions. Not to be outdone was Iowa's Jesse Schmidt, who dominated as usual with 10 catches for 161 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Both teams came out flying in the second half, matching each other score for score. Finally, with just over 1 minute remaining, the Barnstormers got the break they needed when they stopped the Arizona offense on downs. Trailing by seven, Iowa QB J.J. Raterink led a frantic drive all the way to the Arizona 15 yard line before taking a brutal hit from Arizona's Cliff Dukes. The hit jarred the ball loose, and the Rattlers recovered to seal the 55-48 victory.

Next week the Barnstormers remain on the road when they head to San Antonio to take on the Talons on Saturday, June 16. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm. Iowa returns to Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday, June 30 when the Pittsburgh Power come to town. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05pm, and the first 1,500 fans will receive a FREE cheer banner courtesy of Allied, as we celebrate our annual Military Night. Game #14 Iowa @ San Antonio

Barnstormers Fall Short Again in Texas 57-35 (5-9)

San Antonio, TX - Offensive woes in the second half on Saturday night gave the Iowa Barnstormers their fourth loss in their last five Arena Football League games as they fell 57-35 at division-leading San Antonio. With the win , the Talons improve to 10-3 on the season, while Iowa falls to 5-9 with the loss. This loss puts the Barnstormers hopes of making the post-season seem nearly impossible at this point.

After San Antonio got off to a quick start, the Barnstormers (5-9) cut the deficit to 37-28 at the beginning of the second half. The Talons then tallied 20 straight points to put the visitors away.

Iowa managed just 14 second-half points.

San Antonio won its seventh straight game behind seven touchdown passes from Aaron Garcia. The Talons scored a touchdown in the final five seconds in each of the first three quarters.

Barnstormers quarterback J.J. Raterink finished 26-of-43 passing for 268 and three scores, but threw two interceptions and was sacked four times.

Next week the Barnstormers are off with a much needed bye week Iowa returns to Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday, June 30 when the Pittsburgh Power come to town. Game #15: Iowa vs. Pittsburgh

Barnstormers fall to Pittsburgh on Military Night (5-10)

06/30/2012 11:13 PM

Des Moines, IA – Offensive woes in the second half on Saturday night gave the Iowa Barnstormers their third consecutive loss, as they fell to the Pittsburgh Power 56-49 in front of a season high crowd of 11,356 at Wells Fargo Arena Saturday night. The loss drops the Barnstormers to 5-10 on the year, eliminating any chance of a winning season. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh improves to 4-11 with the victory.

Barnstormers DB Jason Simpson had the play of the first half, when he returned an interception 12 yards to put Iowa ahead 14-7. The two teams matched each other score for score the rest of the half, with Pittsburgh taking a 26-21 lead into the break.

Iowa responded in the third quarter and jumped out to a 10 point lead 42-32. However the Barnstormers watched their lead evaporate as the powerful Pittsburgh defense turned up the heat to force two fourth quarter safeties. The Power then capitalized on both of the ensuing drives by scoring touchdowns on each of them, securing a commanding 56-42 lead in just 10 minutes. Iowa rallied to cut the lead to 56-49 with just seconds remaining in the game, but that would be as close as they would get.

The Barnstormers now hit the road for two weeks as they travel to Kansas City and San Jose, before returning home for the final game of the season on July 21 vs. San Antonio. Great seats are still available for this game. The first 1,000 kids will receive a FREE replica Rodney Filer Youth Jersey, courtesy of Scrap Processors, Inc. 07 Kansas City, MO – After a season full of bad breaks, untimely errors and last minute heartbreaks, the Iowa Barnstormers came up with their best team effort of the season on Saturday night in Kansas City. The Barnstormers dominated on both sides of the ball and when the dust settled the final result was a 54-27 victory. With the win, the Barnstormers improve to 6-10 on the season, while Kansas City falls to 3-13 with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Both teams started the game sluggish, with each turning the ball over on downs on their first possession. At the end of the first, the Command held a narrow 9-6 lead. From that point forward Iowa took total control outscoring Kansas City 41-3 over the next two and a half quarters.

Barnstormers QB J.J. Raterink had another strong night completing 21 of 29 passes for 164 yards and 5 touchdowns. It was a night full of record breaking performances. Raterink broke ’s franchise record for passing yards when he connected with Jesse Schmidt early in the game. Schmidt finished the game with 8 receptions for 92 yards and 4 more touchdowns, giving him 52 on the season. Iowa DB Jason Simpson tied and then set the single season franchise record with his 9th and 10th interceptions on the season. The Barnstormers defense dominated, giving up just 136 yards and forcing 3 turnovers.

After Raterink found Schmidt for his final touchdown of the game, the Barnstormers led 54-14 with 8 minutes remaining in the contest. Kansas City responded with two garbage time touchdowns to narrow the lead to but barely made a dent in the stellar Iowa performance.

The Barnstormers remain on the road next week as they travel to San Jose to battle the SaberCats on Saturday, July 14. Iowa will return home for the final game of the season on Saturday July 21 vs. San Antonio. Great seats are still available for this game. Game #17: Iowa @ San Jose

Barnstormers Lose Tough Battle With Saber Cats (6-11)

07/15/2012 12:03 AM

San Jose, CA – The Iowa Barnstormers headed to California this weekend with the attitude that they had nothing to lose. For nearly three quarters the strategy worked perfect. Iowa led 35-20 in the third quarter and was playing some of their best football of the season. However San Jose turned up the heat with 4 second half sacks, including a safety and also had a net recovery on special teams which ultimately led to a 57-48 victory over the Barnstormers.

After a slow start San Jose QB Mark Grieb responded, throwing for 7 touchdowns. Iowa held San Jose WR James Roe to just 3 catches, however all three were good for scores. WR Huey Whittaker chipped in with 3 touchdowns of his own for the Saber Cats.

The Barnstormers built a 28-20 halftime lead on the shoulders of QB J.J. Raterink. Raterink led the balanced Iowa attack, throwing finding WR Jesse Schmidt for two touchdowns. Schmidt now has 54 TD receptions on the season, just one off his franchise record of 55 set last season.

Raterink finished with just 3 touchdown passes on the night, but the Barnstormers had rushing touchdowns from FB Rodney Filer and WR’s and Marco Thomas to make up the difference. Thomas, had Arena Football’s version of a “hat trick” as he had a touchdown receiving, rushing and passing all during the same game. With the loss, Iowa falls to 6-11 on the season, while playoff-bound San Jose finishes the year at 12-6.

The Barnstormers return home for the final game of the season next Saturday July 21 when Aaron Garcia and the San Antonio Talons come to town on National Guard Night. Great seats are still available for this game. The first 1,000 kids will receive a FREE replica Rodney Filer Youth Jersey, courtesy of Scrap Processors, Inc. Game #18 Iowa vs. San Antonio

Barnstormers Win Shootout With Talons 66-63 (7-11)

Des Moines, Iowa – The Iowa Barnstormers played their best game of the season on Saturday night as they defeated the San Antonio Talons 66-63 on a last second field goal to send the Wells Fargo Arena crowd of 9,184 home with smiles. With the win, the Barnstormers finish the 2012 season with a record of 7-11, while San Antonio heads to the playoffs as the conference’s top ranked team at 14-4. Iowa’s victory snapped the Talons 11 game .

The game turned into a quarterback duel between two of the AFL’s best. The Talons Aaron Garcia lived up to his reputation, connecting on 23 of 29 passes for 361 yards and 8 touchdowns. Meanwhile, Iowa’s J.J. Raterink completed 27 of 39 for 350 yards and 8 touchdown passes of his own. Raterink’s final touchdown pass of the night was his 93rd of the season, breaking the team record which ironically was held by Garcia. Neither quarterback threw an interception on the night.

Raterink wasn’t the only Barnstormer breaking records on Saturday night. WR Jesse Schmidt finished the season with a team record 58 receiving touchdowns, besting his own team record of 55 set last year. FB Rodney Filer closed out his 13 year AFL career by moving into 5th place on the AFL’s all-time rushing yards list with 1,232.

The Barnstormers played flawless on the offensive side of the ball, scoring touchdowns on their first 9 possessions, giving them a 63-49 lead entering the fourth quarter. San Antonio rallied to tie the game 63-63 with two long scoring drives sandwiched around stopping the Barnstormers on downs. Iowa took possession of the ball for the final time with 1:17 remaining and drove to the Talons 4 yard line before kicker Craig Camay sealed the victory with a 19 yard field goal as time expired.

The Barnstormers would like to thank the Arena Football League’s best fans and sponsors for another great season.
