Teaching and Remediating the Skills of Australian Football

Presenter - Scott Korczynski Level 2 Coach Western Jets Football Club / Caroline Springs College

The SPIR method for teaching skills

SHOW Name the skill Demonstrate 3 times Provide three coaching points

PRACTICE Have the players practice immediately via appropriate activity

INSTRUCT Give feedback on their performance based on what they have been taught

REWARD Encourage and reward effort and achievement

Progression of Skills Stationary, Distance and Angles, Moving, Extra Ball, Add defender, Game Sense

Kick 5 Main Teaching Points : 1. Body is square to the target at all times (before, during & after kick) 2. Limited sideways ball movement in last 3-4 steps before kick. 3. Ball drop is over the kick foot and from hip height. 4. Support foot pointing towards target, and up on ball of foot with weight transferring forward. 5. Follow through with kicking leg and body towards target.

Common Errors Grip – fingers not positioned correctly or ball positioned over kicking leg Run Up – ball swings excessively from side to side or stuttered run up or not straight to target Ball Drop – Too high or let go too early (especially taller players) Contact – support foot not planted or does not contact the foot in the correct position Follow Through – knee is not to target or kicking leg does not extend through fully

Kicking Drills

1)Kick to Self x 5 on each foot , leg must not move off the spot. (Designed to develop control in support leg and improve ball guiding to foot)

2)Solo Run x 4 on each foot over 40m (kick to self on run, ball goes no higher than head level) (Designed to develop ball control to foot when on the run and develop the ability to weight the kick)

3) Kick 20m off one step, x 5 each foot – work on balancing leg Start in kicking position and advance only one step before kicking 20m (designed to improve balance on support leg and guiding of the ball)

4) Triangle Kick – 3 players 15m apart off 1 step and concentrate on landing kicking foot – run to target partner x 5 kicks each foot (Designed to kick when changing direction, landing of kicking leg and following kick)

5) Kick for distance hanging off support leg - encourages greater thigh use in kicking x 5 each foot (Designed to recruit more upper leg, torso and buttocks movement to generate speed and improve distance

6) Kick at goal two portable posts 2 metres apart and 20m away x 5 each foot Designed to improve players ability to square up the kick and run in a straighter line prior to impact.

7) Kick into hoops , x 5 kicks on each foot and vary the distances (Designed to develop kicking control and weighting of the kick

8) Trajectory Kick – kick at target above the ground from various distances x 5 kicks on each foot Designed to use different types of kicks eg flat, hard, loopy and weighted kicks ( Hoop)

9) Kicking Golf – Kick the ball using different “clubs” eg 3 iron low and hard kick, 7 Iron equal distance and height, 9 iron – high floating type of kick (works on experimenting with kicking depths and distances)

10) Kicking Cricket – work with a partner 10m apart and kick the ball along the ground with the aim to get the ball past your teammate – 1m either side (works on experimenting with different grips, angles, force, ball movement)

Handball Teaching Points : Grip with platform hand and hit with clenched fist, Square Body and toe to Target, Catch the Fist

Handball Drills Stationary Partner (add a ball if too easy) Lane work – normal, follow with block, hands out of tackle, get past defender,

Mark Teaching Points-Keep eyes on the ball, Body Line the ball and move forwards, fingers and thumb close together

Ground Balls Teaching Points Eyes on Ball, Body Line, Elbows kept together and knees Bent
