Bullfighting by Roddy DoyleBy Tom KeoughanRoddy Doyle, author of ldquo;,rdquo; has written a collection of short stories where the protagonists have all entered, or are in the process of entering, middle age. They are experiencing loss. Loss of personal power, loss of marriages, loss of hopes and dreams. They feel just the same as they ever, ever did. But things have changed and they donrsquo;t know why. They donrsquo;t know why.It is a group of funny and bittersweet tales written with a clear eye and a tender tongue. Roddy Doyle is, as always, brilliant.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. May be the best living writer we haveBy Paul S. JellinekAll right, I'll just say it: Roddy Doyle may very well be the best living writer we have in the English language today. Even though a few of the stories in this new collection didn't quite click for me, the others are flat-out phenomenal, and light years (no pun intended) beyond anything I've read recently with the possible exception of some of James Salter's best stories. Somehow, Doyle gets inside his characters' heads in a way that is utterly convincing--not just what they think, but how they think it and why they think it. And that gives his stories--and many of his novels--a power that very few other writers, dead or alive, can match. And then there is his almost supernatural ability to zero in on the smallest nuances--the right or wrong word, the right or wrong look--on which everything that matters hinges: our relationships, our happiness, our very lives. To top it off, there is his wonderfully understated humor that lifts these stories to a whole new level... Well, you get the drift: this guy is for the ages.

A second collection of stories from the Booker Prize-winning author of Paddy Clarke Ha Ha HaWatch for Roddy Doylersquo;s new novel, Smile, coming in October of 2017 Roddy Doyle has won acclaim for his wry wit, his uncanny ear, and his remarkable ability to fully capture the voices and hearts of his characters. Bullfighting, his second collection of stories, offers a series of bittersweet takes on men and middle age, revealing a panorama of Ireland today. Moving from classrooms to graveyards, from local pubs to bullrings, these tales of taking stock and reliving past glories feature men concerned with lossmdash;of their place in the world, of their power, virility, health, and ability to love.

"There is not a writer currently working in the English language who can match Doyle for the fluency with which he tacks back and forth between hilarious and the heartbreaking."--The New York Times Book "Doyle never tells a reader what to think and so preserves a sense of wonder and interpretation that is pure oxygen to the story form."--Los Angeles Times"These stories feel natural, autobiographical, like the kind of thing a man might tell you over a warm beer in a quiet bar."--The Boston GlobeAbout the AuthorRoddy Doyle is an internationally bestselling writer. His first three novelsmdash; The Commitments, The Snapper, and the 1991 Booker Prize finalist The Vanmdash;are known as . He is also the author of the novels (1993 Booker Prize winner), The Woman Who Walked into Doors, and A Star Called Henry, and a non-fiction book about his parents, Rory Ita. Doyle has also written for the stage and the screen: the plays Brownbread, War, Guess Who's Coming for the Dinner, and The Woman Who Walked Into Doors; the film adaptations of The Commitments )as co-writer), The Snapper, and ; When Brendan Met Trudy (an original screenplay); the four-part television series Family for the BBC; and the television play Hell for Leather.
