Walkathon/New Digital Sign

On Friday, September 23, 2011, nearly 1,200 Mother McAuley High School students took to the street to celebrate the school’s inaugural Mercy Day Walk-a-Thon. The celebration began with a kick-off assembly in the school’s main gym, where students were led in a blessing, followed by songs and cheers led by members of the stu- dent council. Students, faculty and staff, decked out in a special Mercy Day commemorative T-shirt, then set out on a 1.4-mile walk throughout neighboring Evergreen Park. Following the walk, students were invited back to campus to enjoy a picnic and entertainment by DJ Loren Gent of Fun! Fun! Fun! DJ Service with free hot dogs, chips and pop. 7 a special message

In June 2012, Dr. Melone will be leaving her position of President at McAuley.

Dr. Christine Melone A woman of vision, leadership, and energy for the mission.

In July 2007, Dr. Melone arrived at Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School to assume the position of the first lay President/Principal. She knew from the start that this was not a “9-to-5 job,” that it would demand that she be “visible and accessible” to the entire school community: board members, administrators, teachers, staff, students, parents, donors and the neighborhood residents and businesses.

From her beginning days, Dr. Melone demonstrated boundless energy and stamina that propelled all of us to “raise the bar” in terms of delivery of service, outcomes, education to all students. Impelled by her passion and desire to grow professionally, she consistently participated in seminars, academies and webinars, and encouraged us to do the same.

Her focus has been student-centered – a great reminder to every faculty and staff member. She is well liked by students and supportive of the many student activities hosted by the school: concerts, plays, sports events, fundraisers, appreciation banquets, and more. In her years with McAuley, Dr. Melone continually promoted the McAuley Lifetime Advantage, an education that strives for excellence in preparing women for leadership roles in society.

Dr. Melone’s goal from the beginning was to build on the solid foundation of those who served before her. We are grateful for all that she has done to fulfill this goal and for all the ways in which she challenged and encouraged us so that we may arrive at excellence.

To borrow words from The Brother’s Karamazov... “Let us agree that we shall never forget one another, and whatever happens - remember how good it felt when we were all here together, united by a good and decent feeling, which made us better people, probably than we would otherwise have been.”

The presentations included Jodee’s day-long anti-bullying program, “It’s NOT Just Joking Around!” which McAuley students, faculty, staff, parents and members of the community were invited to attend in three different sessions.

Jodee spent the morning speaking to the entire student body in the gym of McAuley, sharing the personal story of her struggle from fifth grade through high school as the target of severe school bullying. After school she presented to the faculty and staff including specific, practical advice on how to intervene with students who are victims of bullying. Jodee finished her visit with a special evening presentation that included a 90-minute workshop featuring Jodee’s compelling personal story, advice on how to react if your child is the victim, bully or bystander, from the rare point of view of someone who’s actually lived through it and now dedicates her life to helping others. In addition, Jodee addressed the plight of the “adult survivor of peer abuse” and offered suggestions on how to overcome those open wounds from the past. She shared what her parents and teachers did that helped, what didn’t and why, as well as offered similar insights from the tens of thousands of bullied students she has worked with across the nation. This event was sponsored by McAuley S.A.D.D. and Action/Reaction Clubs through a grant from the McAuley Alumnae Board.

Mock Trial McAuley’s Mock Trial Club competed for the first time in the ISBA competition held at Markham Courthouse. Competing against more than a dozen teams, we are proud to report that McAuley tied for third place.

In addition to this impressive win, each team member earned a $2,000 stipend/scholarship to be used toward tuition at John Marshall Law School. This exciting outcome came about through the hard work of the talented students supported by their parents and the commitment and collaboration of the faculty modera- tors, Holly Hanky-Nickels and Chris Pollard, the McAuley Alumnae coaches, and the generous support of the McAuley Law Society. In the weeks leading up to the Trial, the McAuley Advan- tage was readily apparent, as more than a dozen McAuley Alumnae lawyers, including sitting judges, Assistant State’s Attorneys and preeminent private practitioners worked to prepare the team. We are very proud of our students and look forward to what they will have to offer in the future.

McAuley’s New Bowling Team President Dr. Christine Melone and Athletic Director Laurie Jakubzak ’78 are pleased to announce the addition of bowling to McAuley’s athletic programs in November 2011. With the addi- tion of bowling McAuley now offers its student athletes 13 sports to choose from including basketball, cross country, diving, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track & field, volleyball and waterpolo.

During their first season the varsity team placed 5th in GCAC and the JV team placed 6th in the conference of nine teams. A special congratulations to senior Ari Bulthuis ‘12 who received All Conference as one of the top 25 bowlers in the league.

The new bowling coaches are Hilary Sterk ’05, head coach and Colleen Kelly ’05, assistant coach. “McAuley has always been known for its strong athletics,” says Coach Sterk, “and we knew starting this program would be no different. We were continuously told by the other schools coaches how impressed they were with our girls during their first year, not only their talents on the lanes but their sportsmanship and respect for the league. We applaud you for starting a strong program and setting high standards for the girls who will participate in the future.”

McAuley’s New Culinary Club McAuley is home to a new Culinary Champions Club! In January, a group of 16 students began meeting on Thursday afternoons for a culinary class led by Mr. Jim Behrens, head chef at Food Service Professionals. Students learned basic culinary skills such as making soups, appetizers and dinner entrees. Due to popular demand, a second session was added in April.

Mercy Day On Thursday, September 22, 2011 Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School was pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011 Catherine McAuley Award. The honorees were Senior Elizabeth McCarthy and Freshman Dean Meg Griffin Gardner ‘99.

Elizabeth is well known for her caring and compassionate spirit, and she exemplifies the characteristics of Catherine McAuley by her outstanding leadership and service to the school. She has been a student ambassador for four years and is a student ambassador leader. Elizabeth is a leader in both the Mentor Program as well as Kairos. She is a member of the Na- tional Art Honor Society and has been on the honor roll since freshman year. She also has served on the volleyball team as a manager. Currently a Little School pre-school teacher, Elizabeth plans a career in the field of special education.

Like Catherine McAuley, the school’s founder, Meg Gardner has em- braced the love of learning and the care and education of young women. She is always ready to listen, to help, to comfort and to motivate students. She braves obstacles and challenges with passion and dedication. Meg is a leader who takes action, as evidenced by her initiation of the McAuley Mentor Program which supports students as they enter McAuley, and offers juniors and seniors the opportunity to take a leadership role as men- tors. She also serves as the assistant volleyball coach here for eight years, and like Catherine promotes teamwork and cooperation.

Meg is a 1999 graduate of McAuley. As a student, she was involved in Action Reaction, NHS, Student Council and volleyball. She was a part of the 1997 state championship volleyball team and earned a volleyball scholarship to DePaul University. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and Secondary Education and earned a master’s degree in School Administration from Concordia University. She has worked at McAuley for the past seven years as an English teacher, Physical Education teacher and most recently, as the Freshman Dean.

Each year, the McAuley community is invited to nominate a senior and a faculty/staff member to receive the Catherine McAuley Award. This coveted award epitomizes the mission of Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School and honors its namesake, Catherine McAuley. The award is presented at the annual Mercy Day celebration at the end of September. This special celebration includes an assembly, a remembrance gift, and the retelling of the story of Catherine McAuley and her legacy today.
