Art Walk Trying to tie it all together on an artists’ canvas is the Paterson Arts Council and its aptly named Paterson Art Walk, a one-day collaborative exhibition on June 12 of over 200 local, regional and international artists and curators. BACKGROUND: Born in 1883, William Carlos Williams grew up in New Jersey, spent two of his teen years in Europe, but returned home to attend Horace Mann High School. He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, built a private practice, and served as head pediatrician at Passaic General Hospital. In 1913, he bought a house with his wife Flossie, at 9 Ridge Road, Rutherford, and lived there until his death in 1963. In his book, “Something Urgent I Have To Say To You”: The Life and Works of William Carlos Williams, Herbert Leibowitz writes, “you are never far from Rutherford in any of Williams’s poems.” Influenced by his working class patients of New Jersey, Williams inspired generations of poets.

    LA.X,}BEIlT VALLEY ROAD sAsTrE .--'--.{iTfQff I2ATERSON, N.J. 07503 Life and Tirnes in Silk City honored "Life and Times in Silk City," a collaborative exhibition sponsored by the Historical Society, the American Labor Museum, and the Paterson Museum, was given an,,Award of Merit" from the American Association for State and Local History. The exhibit, which examined the impact of the silk industry on Paterson, N.J., included components at each museum. These components explored "The Silk Elite,,',,The Worker,,, and "The Process." The exhibition was made possible by a $96,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities with support from Alvin G. Blau, Chairman of the Passaic County Rotary Hoffman LaRoche, First National State Bank of N.J., and the Committee, presents this years Rotary donation to Universal Manufacturing Company. Massive brick mill buildings lined the canals that transformed the power of the falls into energy' to drive machines. These mills manufactured many things during the history of this industrial city. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they produced silk fabrics in such quantities that Paterson was known as the "Silk City." Today, many of the mill buildings survive, mute witnesses to a turbulent history. This lesson is based on several National Historic Landmark nomination files, the National Register of Historic Places registration file, Belle Vista, and additional information. The lesson can be used in U.S. history, social studies, and geography courses in units on labor-management conflict and the rise of unions, or on immigration.
