CHAPTER 2

INTRODUCTION

2.1 Project background

This proposal is for grant of environmental clearance of sand mining at village Motegaon in Chimur tehsil of Chandrapur district.

2.2 Need for the project

Sand is very important constituent in building industry. Sand will be locally made available to these user industries in the vicinity.

2.3 The proposal o It is proposed to mine sand shown in Figure 1.

o Latitude and longitude are 20°31' 46.2866"N and 79°57' 2.0755"E respectively. o Location is shown in Figure 2. o Lease area is 0.60 ha. o Production capacity is @ 4 Brass/day. o Method – manual open cast using spade/fawad/ labours o Transportation – closed/covered tractors/trucks.

2.4 Objectives :

o Project Proponent will continue mining only at optimized rate and use sand to cater building requirement in the vicinity after grant of environmental clearance. o Indiscriminate /non-scientific mining will not be resorted. o In short project proponent will continue and ensure sand removal in an environment friendly extraction

2.5 Present practice

o It is a proposed sand mining. o Land is already degraded and mining carried out over extent – 0.60 ha o Mining plan is approved for manual opencast mining using spade and labours o Transportation will be done by covered tractor/tippers. o Mining will be carried out as per approved mining plan.

2.6 Impact

o Proposed Sand lease is at a distance of 4 Km from Tadoba Andheri Protected Forest.

6

o Percent of moisture in sand is low and silt (particles <75×µm) percentage is low. Therefore emissions of particulate matter predicted by equation Eb= 0.0018{S/5][U/5][M/2]-2 [Y/6]-1, where M & S are moisture & silt percentages respectively. o Adverse impact either on air, water or land environment is not likely in this case because of favourable environment- setting.

2.7 Management

o Project Proponent has appointed a consultant to continue to monitor environmental quality, carry out sensitivity analysis and advise accordingly. o Project Proponent will continue to abide by all the prevailing rules. 2.8 Salient Features of Mining Plan

3.0 Environmental Management Plan

S. Dust Source Control measure No 1 Haul Road  Compaction, gradation and drainage on both sides & development of green belts  Proper maintenance.  Regular water spraying.  Avoiding over filling of tippers/tractors and consequent spillage on the roads  Air quality will be regularly monitored both in the core zone and the buffer zone. 2 Truck /Tractor  No overloading of trucks. Movement  Sandcarrying trucks will be effectively covered by tarpaulin to avoid escape of fines to the atmosphere.  Enforcing speed limit.  Regular monitoring of the exhaust fumes.

3 Sand pit  Green belt along bank  Provision of dusk masks.
