Pam Brannon | GB News 10 years of service

Santa Rosa Island Authority’s Public Safety Director Bob West (holding the framed citation) was honored at last week’s SRIA board meeting by his staff of lifeguards with a special 10-year service award. The citation for 10 years of service outlined the many improvements West made in the department. The staff thanked him for bringing more up to date equipment and safer conditions in his 10 years on the job, now making Pensacola Beach lifeguards some of the most equipped, trained in the state, as well as making Pensacola Beach one of the safest beaches. Presenting his citation was (left to right) Andrew Edwards, former Senior Lifeguard and now the new Events Coordinator, Senior Lifeguard Alex Johnson, and Water safety Supervisor Dave Greenwood (far right). The Pensacola Mud Run was the re- sult of many months of work and planning by friends of Pathways For Change as a fund raiser. The 1,500 or so people who ran the course were rewarded with 12 obstacles over mudholes, cargo-net, haybales, and through ice-water and muddy bogs. They even had a short run for the kiddos. It was a great time for the family and the most action Canton- ment has seen in a long time. I navigated the course with a group of other volunteers at the end of the race. Chris Nemith is taking a page from his bosses’ playbook – although it’s one he wished he didn’t have to. Citing the GBHS administration’s handling of the no official debacle the previous week, Nemith is taking full responsibility for his team’s 13-6 Homecoming loss to Mosley Friday night. After going for it twice on fourth down earlier in the game (they failed to convert the first, but did on the second), Nemith opted to punt on a fourth-and-1 midway through the third quarter, with his team trailing 7-6. Nemith said he was playing the ‘field position’ game – pinning the opponent deep and hoping to get the offense going on its next series. But Gulf Breeze mustered only 21 yards in total offense in its final three series, finishing the game going 4-for-13 on third down conversions. “When I said ‘punt,’ you could see it just come out of them,” Nemith said. “I played not to lose instead of playing to win. We’ve been aggressive like that during Jason Thompson | Gulf Breeze News the season – trying onside kicks to start the game or Got 'em surrounded going for it on fourth down.” Chase Blake (12), Jonathon Dorf (5) and Blake Myers converge on Mosley's Christian Childree during GBHS' 13-6 loss to Mosley on “I should’ve gone for it there.
