1 Unlikability and Female Villains in the Works of Gillian Flynn Cannon Elder Lane High Point, North Carolina Bachelor of Arts, English, University of Virginia, 2017 Bachelor of Arts, Spanish, University of Virginia, 2017 A Thesis presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Master of Arts Department of English University of Virginia May 2018 2 Introduction: In recent years, television and popular fiction have begun to feature a new type of female character termed the “unlikable” woman. From popular novels such as Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train to TV shows such as Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag and Lena Dunham’s Girls, popular cultural products in recent years have begun to center on a depiction of women distinct from any before—at least in terminology.1 In each of these works, female writers depict troubled women, from murderers and alcoholics to narcissists, each unwilling to conform to the standards and expectations of representations of women. In each of these works, the authors of these characters refuse to position them as role models, instead focusing on their extreme negative capacity, presenting their story arcs not as ones of redemption or correction, but as ones of continuous development and iteration of personal defect. Against the trend of hailing positive representations of women in fiction, these flawed and profoundly human characters slide the scale in the opposite direction. Instead of proving the equal intelligence, strength, and positive capacity of women, these characters work to accentuate the negative. -

Her three published novels are the thrillers: Sharp Objects, Dark Places, and Gone Girl. Early life Flynn was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Both of her parents were professors at Metropolitan Community College–Penn Valley: her mother, Judith Ann (nee Schieber), a reading- comprehension professor; her father, Edwin Matthew Flynn, a film professor. "Painfully shy," Flynn found escape in reading and writing and watching horror movies. Flynn attended the University of Kansas, where she received her undergraduate degrees in English and journalism. She spent two years in California writing for a trade magazine for human resources professionals before moving to Chicago where, in 1997, she earned a Master's in journalism at Northwestern University. Career Initially, Flynn wanted to work as a police reporter but soon discovered she had no aptitude for police reporting. She worked briefly at U.S. News & World Report before being hired as a feature writer in 1998 for Entertainment Weekly. She was promoted to television critic, writing about both tv and film. Flynn attributes her craft to her 15-some years in journalism: Book Club Discussion Guide I could not have written a novel if I hadn't been a journalist first, because it taught me that there's no muse that's going to come down and bestow upon you the mood to write. Of English, St.Joseph’s College of Arts and Science for Women, Hosur. Abstract: Gillian Schieber Flynn, is an American writer known for her psychological thriller novels. In her novels, she gives a strange and suspicious tone to her characters and to her writing. This tone makes the novel more interesting and it attracts the reader’s attention. Gillian Flynn is the author of three successive novels: Sharp Objects, Dark Places, and Gone Girl. Flynn’s novel, Dark Places won Dagger Award and the novels Sharp Objects and Gone Girl were the New York Times bestsellers. Gillian Flynn's third novel Gone Girl is a thriller, mysterious and psychological entertaining tale. The novel tells the story of a Missouri couple Nick and Amy. Amy, the central character grew up in New York with her wealthy parents. She is a beautiful, manipulative, seductive and self-centred psychopath. She could have a narcissistic personality disorder which reveals from her actions. Throughout the novel, she uses strategic calculations on how to deceive other characters and manipulates their behaviour. Amy's manipulations are repeatedly successful because she is very seductive and charming. This paper tends to analyse the narcissistic traits: seduction, manipulation, and rejection of the central character in the novel. Keywords: narcissism, manipulation, rejection, seduction. Narcissists are lovers of power and control. To attain power, they use several traits. The narcissistic traits include three levels: seduction, manipulation, and rejection. -

In the latest issue of emmy® magazine, Adams reveals what brought her back to television, where her career had an unsteady start nearly 20 years ago. The award-winning official publication of the Television Academy hits newsstands June 19. The eight-episode Sharp Objects is based on the novel of the same name by best-selling author Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) and was created for television by showrunner Marti Noxon (UnREAL, Dietland). The project marks a return to television for Adams, who appeared in several series early in her career but found far greater success in films. “It wasn’t that I don’t like television,” she says. “I just sort of got [the feeling] that television didn’t like me.
