  • COMPARATIVE VIDEOGAME CRITICISM by Trung Nguyen
COMPARATIVE VIDEOGAME CRITICISM by Trung Nguyen Citation Bogost, Ian. Unit Operations: An Approach to Videogame Criticism. Cambridge, MA: MIT, 2006. Keywords: Mythical and scientific modes of thought (bricoleur vs. engineer), bricolage, cyber texts, ergodic literature, Unit operations. Games: Zork I. Argument & Perspective Ian Bogost’s “unit operations” that he mentions in the title is a method of analyzing and explaining not only video games, but work of any medium where works should be seen “as a configurative system, an arrangement of discrete, interlocking units of expressive meaning.” (Bogost x) Similarly, in this chapter, he more specifically argues that as opposed to seeing video games as hard pieces of technology to be poked and prodded within criticism, they should be seen in a more abstract manner. He states that “instead of focusing on how games work, I suggest that we turn to what they do— how they inform, change, or otherwise participate in human activity…” (Bogost 53) This comparative video game criticism is not about invalidating more concrete observances of video games, such as how they work, but weaving them into a more intuitive discussion that explores the true nature of video games. II. Ideas Unit Operations: Like I mentioned in the first section, this is a different way of approaching mediums such as poetry, literature, or videogames where works are a system of many parts rather than an overarching, singular, structured piece. Engineer vs. Bricoleur metaphor: Bogost uses this metaphor to compare the fundamentalist view of video game critique to his proposed view, saying that the “bricoleur is a skillful handy-man, a jack-of-all-trades who uses convenient implements and ad hoc strategies to achieve his ends.” Whereas the engineer is a “scientific thinker who strives to construct holistic, totalizing systems from the top down…” (Bogost 49) One being more abstract and the other set and defined.

So, me and Sykotic sat down after he got back from MLG's biggest event to date and I drilled him with a few about his time there. Gex: First off, let me thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do this interview. Sykotic: Sure, no problem. Gex: What would you summarize as being the high-point of MLG Chicago? Sykotic: Definitely the Pro 4v4. Ya, Final Boss and Storm Venture, Great Game. But, man, Ogre 1, he looked like he was gonna throw up. He did not look good. He really didn’t. He looked like he was about to puke. Gex: I know that the pro’s schedule is a bit different from everyone else’s schedule. Like they don’t have to compete in the FFA, so was FB there from day 1 or not? Sykotic: Ya, everyone has to register on Friday. The Tournament goes Friday, Saturday, Sunday. So [pros] register Friday, and then they can do whatever until they actually have to compete, which the Ogres just sat in the skybox and practiced in their hotel room. Gex: That’s gotta be nice. I know you just got off the phone talking to one of several people that you’re trying to get sponsored from. What is that kind of process like, and how did MLG Chicago help in terms of negotiating some kind of deal? Sykotic: Well, just the face that I’m the only kid from Springfield, Illinois that actually competed there, and did semi-good, I get a lot of credit for that.

ABSTRACT Despite recent growth and popularity, esports as a scene is struggling with a number of problems ranging from payment problems and cheating to questionable treatment based on various factors such as race and gender. In this paper we seek to uncover how perceptions of women in esports are guided by stereotypes 43 44 A pure meritocracy blind to identity of all-female teams and ‘female professional players’. Our data consists of 952 Reddit comments on two announcements of all- female teams in League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The nature of esports was perceived as a working meritocracy where only player skill matters. Especially all-female teams were seen to be a threat to this order, since they were considered to lack dedication and have ulterior motives for playing the game. Ultimately, getting to visibly exist as a woman in the scene was a reward for compliance in the esports meritocracy: exhibiting skill, playing in mixed teams, and tolerating harassment. Keywords esports, female gamers, all-female teams, professional players INTRODUCTION: WOMEN’S ROLE IN COMPETITIVE GAMING AND ESPORTS In this study, we seek to uncover how the esports-networked public receives women as professional and casual players into the scene.

Williams School of Graduate Studies Copyright by Vincent Parker 2020 All Rights Reserved Abstract SEXUAL POLITICS IN VIDEO GAMES: A LEAGUE OF LEGENDS CASE STUDY Vincent Parker B.A., Appalachian State University M.A., Appalachian State University Chairperson: Dr. Kyle Stevens Despite decades of technological and social advancement, video games continue to support discourse of the heterosexual white male at the expense of marginalized individuals and their experiences. “Sexual Politics in Video Games” builds upon previous scholarship regarding aesthetic representations and identity formation using one of the most popular video games, League of Legends (League), as a case study. Specifically, I ask: How should games acknowledge differing existences? How does representation and identification impact gameplay? How is identification formed during streaming? How does viewer-identity influence gameplay? How do viewer-identities interact and coexist? and What does this mean moving forward? The first and second chapter of this project highlights the field and provides a review of scholarship regarding video games, history, and identification/representation.

  • Inside the 2V2 Universal Open Rocket League
12/1/2017 Behind the Scenes of the Universal Open Rocket League # esports Inside the 2v2 Universal Open Rocket League © Psyonix August 24 · By Andrew Hayward Go behind the scenes of NBC's TV tournament, and find out when to expect more Universal Open events. When it was first announced this summer, NBC's Universal Open Rocket League tournament ruffled a few feathers in the pro scene. Not only did it seemingly conflict with other events like DreamHack Atlanta and season four qualifiers for the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS), but it was also the first major 2v2 tournament — a big shift away from the competitive standard of 3v3. Ultimately, the scheduling issues were largely alleviated, and many top pros turned out despite some reservations about playing doubles. And we've had seen some pretty strong battles over the last few weeks, as the thousands of initial teams have now been whittled down to the Top 16 squads. They'll descend upon the Esports Arena in Santa Ana, California, this weekend Aug. 26–27, to crown the first Universal Open champion in the televised grand finals. And that won't be the last of the Universal Open, or NBC's 2v2 Rocket League ambitions: There's plenty more planned ahead. We had a chance to visit Chicago's Comcast SportsNet studio to watch the recent Midwest Regional in person, talk to two of the top teams about playing 2v2 on TV and find out how the Universal Open was created — and what happens next.
