The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis is blessed with two great co-cathedrals—the Cathedral of Saint Paul in St. Paul and the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis. The top photo is of the altar and baldachin in the Basilica and the lower photo is of the altar and baldachin in the Cathedral.

Alongside the photos of our two magnificent churches is Fr. Louis Hennepin, O.F.M., who named St. Anthony Falls, the origin of the city of Minneapolis. This statue of Fr. Hennepin was erected by the Minnesota Knights of Columbus on the grounds of the Basilica and was dedicated on October 12, 1930. For its 50th anniversary the Minnesota Knights of Columbus cleaned and elevated the statue so it could be seen better and rededicated it on October 12, 1980.

You will have an opportunity to visit both magnificent churches during your stay with us. On Saturday evening, we will host a welcome mass at the Basilica of St. Mary, a short walk from the convention hotels. On Sunday and Monday, we are offering tours of the Cathedral of Saint Paul with an extra stop on Monday at our newly restored historic State Capitol.

The Archdiocese is blessed to have many historic as well as more modern churches. Each weekend, masses are celebrated in English, Spanish, French, Polish, Vietnamese, and sign language for the deaf. We also celebrate with our brothers in the Eastern Rite— Byzantine, Maronite, and Ukrainian.

We are honored that all of the current in Minnesota are Fourth Degree Brother Knights: and Auxiliary Andrew Cozzens of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Bishop Michael Hoeppner of the Crookston diocese, Bishop (former State Chaplain) of the Duluth diocese, Bishop John LeVoir of the New Ulm diocese, Bishop Donald Kettler of the St. Cloud diocese, and Bishop John Quinn of the Winona- Rochester diocese.

3 MINNESOTA STATE COUNCIL

Worthy Delegates and guests, As the state deputy of Minnesota, I look forward to having you visit our wonderful state. It has been 20 years since the Supreme Convention was last here. Some of the attractions have remained but we have many new and exciting areas to visit as well as some new events that you may want to consider while you are visiting with us.

Please take some time to look over the tours and events and consider coming in a few days earlier.

A couple of days you will have the opportunity to visit a working dairy farm owned by a Brother Knight. Have you ever visited Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store? It’s here and you can check out the large varieties of candies, some of which you may have enjoyed in your childhood.

How about a day trip/pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe? Ok, it’s in the bordering state of Wisconsin. Enjoy the scenery as you head to the shrine, celebrate mass at a beautiful location and marvel at the architecture that is only a bit over a decade old.

We also have a Grayline tour of the Twin Cities. Maybe a quick visit to St. Paul and the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.

Finally a visit to St. Paul Cathedral, St. Mary’s Basilica in Minneapolis, and in between look at St. Anthony Falls that Fr Hennepin discovered and named in the 1600’s.

And of course there is the Mall of America in Bloomington. That could be a whole day with the shops, restaurants, aquarium, and inside amusement park. There is no sales tax on clothing in Minnesota!

You can explore on your own the Twin City area. Much of downtown Minneapolis is within walking distance and St. Paul and Bloomington are just a Light Rail ride away.

I invite you to our Monday night welcoming party with the famous Whitesidewalls 50’s and 60’s music revue. For those who attended last year’s convention in Baltimore, their Monday night event was The Hubcaps, also a 50’s band. As the host of this year’s event, I bet the state deputy of Maryland that “our band was better than their band” and I wagered a can of SPAM against their wager of a can of lobster stew. It’s time to see who wins!

I invite the ladies to the Wednesday luncheon hosted by our state officer’s wives. One of our general agents has a family band that will entertain you. Fr. Richard Kunst of our Duluth diocese has a presentation of his papal artifacts which is second only to the Vatican’s.

As you arrive at the airport (MSP) or drive to the hotel we will have friendly faces to help you and direct you. I look forward to seeing you in August in MINNESOTA.

Marc Peters State Deputy, Minnesota

Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe Tour

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin, faithful to the message of the Blessed Virgin Mary through her appearances on the American continent in 1531, serves the spiritual needs of those who suffer poverty in body and soul. It is a place of ceaseless prayer for the corporal and spiritual welfare of God’s children, especially those in most need.

In 1995, the Robert Swing family (an Honorary Life Knight) gifted approximately 70 acres to aid then Bishop Raymond Leo Burke to fulfill his vision of a Marian Shrine. Today, this area includes the Shrine Church and Pilgrim Center, Blessed John Duns Scotus, memorial to the Unborn, Mother of Good Counsel Votive Candle Chapel, Rosary Walk, Stations of the Cross, and devotional areas to St. Joseph the Workman and St. Kateri Tekakwitha.

Cathedral of Saint Paul, Mass & Guided Tour

Attend Sunday Mass at noon followed by a guided tour of one of the finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture, designed by E. L. Masqueray. This, the fourth Cathedral of Saint Paul, was the dream of Archbishop , who secured the site in 1904. The Cathedral dominates the Saint Paul skyline.

The cornerstone was laid on June 2, 1907. The first liturgy was held on Palm Sunday, March 28, 1915. Work continued on the interior for decades. On October 14, 1958, it was consecrated by Archbishop William O. Brady, securing its place among the premier houses of worship in the United States. It was placed on the National Register of Historical Buildings in 1974.

The Cathedral of Saint Paul was designated as the National Shrine of the Apostle Paul by the Vatican and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on March 25, 2009, following a request by Archbishop John C. Nienstedt.

In 2012, the Vatican established a “bond of spiritual affinity” between the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome and the Cathedral of Saint Paul. This means that anyone making a pilgrimage here can enjoy all the spiritual benefits as if they were able to pray at the tomb of the Apostle Paul in Rome.

Tens of thousands of people make a pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Saint Paul every year. Over the decades, the Cathedral developed as a catechism in stone and glass by evangelizing through grandeur and beauty. The patron is particularly honored through a series of bronze grills that depict major events in the life of Saint Paul from his conversion to his martyrdom.

The motorcoach will leave at 11:00 am and return at 2:30pm. Cost: $22.00 per person (refreshments served) Photos courtesy of Cathedral of St. Paul

Minnesota State Capitol & Cathedral of St. Paul Guided Tour

Spend your day enjoying the beauty of two of the finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture. The Minnesota State Capitol is one of the Midwest's most spectacular buildings. Inspired by the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, architect Cass Gilbert was determined to design a building in the classical style, but with all the modern conveniences of the time. The stunning result is a towering white marble dome, fluted columns, graceful arches and commanding statuary. Gilbert would go on to design the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington D.C.

At a cost of $4.5 million, the Renaissance Revival-style building opened to the public in 1905. When it was discovered that parts of the exterior marble were deteriorating and posed safety concerns, the Capitol underwent a $310 million repair and restoration project from 2013-2017.

Cass Gilbert's design of the dome echoes the Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican. The Capitol is more than 430 feet long, from east to west. From ground level to the top of the dome's lantern measures 220 feet — about the height of a 20-story building. Inside, the building has more than 300,000 square feet of floor space, or about 5 million cubic feet of space.

On the way to the Cathedral you will have the opportunity for lunch on your own.

Up the hill from the Capitol is the fourth Cathedral of Saint Paul, that was the dream of Archbishop John Ireland, and was designed by E. L. Masqueray. The Cathedral of Saint Paul was designated as the National Shrine of the Apostle Paul by the Vatican and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on March 25, 2009.

17 Getting around Minneapolis

Downtown Minneapolis is a relatively safe city, but like all major metropolitan areas you should always be aware of your surroundings.

The Hyatt and Millennium are located across the street from each other on the Nicollet Mall, a pedestrian friendly “main street” lined with shops, pubs, trees and benches. If you like to people watch, this is the place. The Hilton is just one block off the mall. It is a short 4 block or 5 minute stroll from the other two hotels.

The Minneapolis Convention Center, which will be the location for many of the convention activities, is between the Hilton, Hyatt and Millennium. All four facilities are connected by climate controlled skyways. Minneapolis is the home of the skyway with over 9 miles connecting most of downtown. On a hot, humid August day, you will enjoy the air conditioning in the skyway as much as we do the heat when it is below zero in the winter. But on a nice day, there is nothing better than to stroll the streets of downtown and enjoy the outdoor seating or maybe roof top seating of the many establishments.

The Vigil Mass on Saturday is at the Basilica of Saint Mary about 9/10 of a mile or a 25 minute walk from the Hilton.

Target Field, site of Sunday’s Twins game, with our Supreme Knight throwing out the first pitch is, 8/10 of a mile or a 25 minute walk from the Hilton, unless you stop to sample the local cuisine or a beverage.

For those who do not wish to walk to either event, we will be providing a complimentary Millennium shuttle from the Convention Center.
