Dear NFL Legends:

As we celebrate the Holiday Season, we take time to salute all of you Legends who each year assist those less fortunate (and less famous) in your local towns.

We in the League Office also recognize the thousands of you who hold responsible leadership positions in various professions in all 50 states.

For example:

Bobby Abrams, Virgil Livers and Dexter McNabb are high school principals helping to shape teenagers into young men and women. Dick Anderson, Ray Childress and Willie Lanier are successful businessmen who donate their time and financial resources to countless charities. Dick Ambrose, Ed Newman and Bob Thomas are judges who sit on the bench… something they didn’t do often as players. Wallace Francis, Herb Lusk and Aeneas Williams are religious leaders lifting the spirits of the old and young around the clock. Lin Dawson, Tommy Holmoe and Brad Stevens are college athletic directors responsible for hundreds of studentathletes and multimillion dollar budgets. Dan Doornink, Dave Gallagher and Pat O'Neill are medical doctors maintaining and improving the health of the young and old alike. Doug Allen, Bobby Hammond and Matt Miller are college professors teaching subjects ranging from mechanical engineering to labor studies. Antonio Pierce, and are coaching hundreds of players... perhaps even a few future NFL Legends. Bruce Harper, Ron Jaworski and lead their own foundations in order to improve the lives of young people on a daily basis. Keith Elias, Dwight Hollier and Joe Pisarcik work every day to inform and assist NFL alumni through programs, services and events.

We thank all Legends who have a dedication to service and represent OUR NFL family as role models every day.

We wish you and YOUR family a happy and healthy Holiday Season. In order to help you better in the New Year, we are asking you to take three minutes to respond to a survey we are sending you later this week.

Regards,

WHERE ARE LEGENDS NOW?

MR. IRRELEVANT BECOMES ANYTHING BUT...

Linebacker David Vobora (pictured) was the final pick in the 2008 NFL Draft and earned the annual distinction of being celebrated as ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ in Newport Beach that summer.

He overcame the odds and played three seasons with the Rams and one with the Seahawks before injuries forced him to retire.

His story doesn’t end there… it just begins.

After a year trying to find himself, the Oregon native and his family moved to Dallas and helped open the Performance Vault gym that focuses on athletes who are bound for the NFL or hoping for that second chance to get back into the league. The gym also caters to wounded military veterans back from deployment overseas.

“I had this vision,” Vobora recalls. “Vets and transitioning athletes helping each other under one roof. It’s a phase of life where we deal with the same kind of problems. We as athletes are used to playing in front of thousands and vets are used to running into battle. Suddenly, when we both are ‘discharged,’ life looks different when you’re struggling to find a job or watching football from the couch. It’s not easy either way.”

Vobora also has founded the Adaptive Training Foundation, a nonprofit that offers free personal training to individuals recovering from traumatic injuries, either in military or civilian life. He is developing a certification program to prepare others to do similar work. During this holiday season, the 29year old Vobora and other Legends who give so much to help others deserve not only our yearround support, but the appreciation of Americans across the land. We salute you!

NFL LEGENDS IN THE NEWS

This is the hiring season for many colleges, and several of your Legends colleagues have new positions on campus: Scott Frost, who was the for Oregon’s successful team the last three seasons, gets his first head coaching job (and whistle) at the University of Central Florida. Frost was a safety in our league from 19982003… 1965 Heisman Trophy winner and former AFLNFL RB Mike Garrett was appointed last month as the new athletic director for Cal StateLos Angeles. Garrett, who was AD at his alma mater, USC, for 17 years, proudly wears his Chiefs Super IV ring… Speaking of ADs, a pair of Patriots Legends were named to new posts last month. DE Garin Veris (Patriots, 198591) already is on the athletic director’s job at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. TE Lin Dawson (pictured; Patriots, 198190) is the new athletic director at Clark Atlanta University. In his spare time, Lin plans to continue his studies toward his PhD degree. Congrats to all!

The 2015 Hall of Fame class was inducted earlier this month. There were some pretty good names on the list, including LB Trev Alberts, LB Brian Bosworth, LB Bob Breunig, G Ruben Brown, WR Wes Chandler, WR Tom Gatewood, DB Dick Jauron, RB Clint Jones, T Lincoln Kennedy, DE Art Still, LB Zach Thomas, RB Ricky Williams and the late RB Rob Lytle.

Speaking of Halls of Fame, week in Honolulu next month again will include the induction of several NFL Legends into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame. The 2016 class includes T Rockne Freitas (of Hawaiian descent), S Troy Polamalu (Samoan), and WR Vai Sikahema (Tongan)... three great players!

Syracuse University had a special ceremony on campus last month when three statues were unveiled on Plaza 44. Why Plaza 44? The three statues were of three of the most famous Orangemen who all wore that number during their college football days at the school: RB Jim Brown, RB Floyd Little and the late RB . Both Brown and Little were present for the event, which also included a new statue of legendary coach Ben Schwartzwalder a short distance from the Plaza.

QB Brian Griese (the goodlooking QB in the family) received the Big Ten’s Ford Kinnick Leadership Award in early December. Brian, who was both a winner and Pro Bowler during his 11year career (19982009), played college ball at Michigan, where he was MVP of the 1998 Rose Bowl. Griese is now the founder and board president of Judi’s House, a nonprofit organization which serves grieving children in the Denver area. The House is named after his late mom who died of breast cancer when he was 12 years old. Pro Football Hall of Famer and dad, Bob, must be proud!

RB , who has been on stage at the Nashville Shakespeare Festival since his NFL days ended in 2004, moves to Broadway next month in the cast of the musical ‘Chicago.’ He will play the role of Billy Flynn, a fasttalkin’ lawyer (is there ANOTHER type?)… Former NFL LB Napoleon Harris (200209) announced last month that he plans to run in 2016 as a Democrat for the U.S. Senate from Illinois. Harris was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2013… QB Doug Williams, the Bucs first round pick in 1978, was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor on December 6. He was later named Super Bowl XXII MVP for the Redskins in 1987 and now works as a personnel executive under Bruce Allen in the team’s front office.

Congratulations to ALL the above Legends.
