ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 2016-207: What is important to you?

Dear Friends,

What is important to you? That is a central question that we all ask ourselves. How you answer this question guides your moment, your day and beyond. Your family, business or organization is driven by these choices. Our external environment competes for our attention and tries to dictate what is important. Annually, we take a moment to lay out the things we have done over the past year and showcase our plans for the next, in short, what is important to us. However, this is only a snapshot, a selfie if you will. What we do every day in and around the Cultural Center reveals what we think is important.

The Campus is full of activity, all designed to improve the quality of life in and around Genesee County. Thousands of school children are exposed to world class educational performances, cutting edge science and our region’s critical role in the history of the world. Our patrons experience touring shows and exhibits that are traditionally found only in “big cities”. Our grounds are beautifully maintained and enjoyed free of charge by countless members of the community who value green spaces and the cultural environment.

Many years ago, our community asked itself: what is important? Their answer: a Cultural Center, one that fosters cultural activity and community vitality through history, science and the arts. All of us, from our student ushers, our extraordinary family of staff and our volunteer board members, answer this question the same way, every day. However, we would not be able to flourish now, nor more importantly in the future, if it were not for people like you who donate money, buy tickets, attend events, sponsor shows, invite your friends and say nice things about Flint.

While the question remains the same, we cannot rest on past answers. All of us need to take a moment and ask what is important to you? We won’t tell you how to answer the question, but if you need a hint swing by Kearsley and Crapo or visit us at www.fcccorp.org.

Dr. D.J. Trela The Whiting 2016-2017 in Review

During the 2016-2017 season, more than 85,000 guests of all ages were entertained at The Whiting. Performances included Black Violin, Capitol Steps, Hal Holbrook in Mark Twain Tonight, Eisenhower Dance Company The Light Show, Dirty Dancing, Hip Hop Nutcracker, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Classic Albums Live, An Evening with Molly Ringwald, Drumline Live, Pippin, Riverdance, 42nd Street and The Reduced Shakespeare Company. We presented educational and outreach activities to over 12,000 students and adults including: The Man Who Planted Trees, Judgment at Nuremburg, Fahrenheit 451, The Jackie Robinson Story and County of Kings. We implemented a Youth Usher Corps, provided Summer Programming, Master Classes, Pre-Glows and Green Room Society member events.

As Mid-’s premier non-profit performing arts venue for more than half a century, The Whiting takes the mystery, excitement, and intrigue of its stage and infuses it into the lives of the people within our community. Working with partners, The Whiting continues to work on the restoration and reopening of Flint’s historic Capitol Theatre. The revitalized live performance venue and reactivated retail and commercial activity is critical to the continued growth and vibrancy of the downtown core, the entire city and region. With continued support The Whiting will grow, create, inspire and enrich our community for generations to come. Sloan*Longway 2016-2017 in Review

Attendance for the Sloan Museum’s A Bugs World and In The Dark were on goal for the summer and fall 2016, and public admissions for Longway Planetarium were at 114% of goal. Outreach activities to schools, libraries and other community locations exceeded goal by 164%. Sloan Museum hosted Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition which opened in January 2017. This blockbuster exhibit was the best attended exhibit in Sloan’s history. Longway Planetarium debuted a new show titled We Are Stars which was a welcome addition to our show lineup. Staff designed and produced holiday shows and light shows which were very well received (Queen: The Light Show, Ooky, Spooky Light Show, Cosmic Christmas).

As Longway Planetarium audiences continue to enjoy the 2015-16 renovation, Sloan Museum is exploring plans for expansion, with new galleries, exhibit and maker spaces and a whole new look. Stay tuned for updates! Sloan Museum, Longway Planetarium and the Automotive Gallery continue to provide engaging experiences for everyone that inspires lifelong curiosity in history, science and technology. We are honored to be a part of the Flint, Genesee County family. Financials

The Flint Cultural Center Corporation is committed to maintaining financial stability and solvency within our organization. The reason for our commitment is two-fold. First, and most obviously, the FCCC needs to remain fiscally solvent in order to continue to provide the quality programs and services that people have come to expect from Sloan*Longway and The Whiting. Second, and equally important, we believe that a strong arts and cultural community can certainly bolster the local economy making the FCCC a stimulus for a stronger and more vibrant community. In 2016-2017 the FCCC had revenues that exceeded expenditures resulting in a modest surplus to be set aside for future needs and or unexpected expenditures. Major factors in generating this surplus were effective cost controls and higher-than-expected development income from planned gifts. We achieved these favorable financial results while maintaining the high level of programmatic excellence that our patrons have come to expect from Sloan*Longway and The Whiting. Financials
