2. Lehi’s Sons confront Laban for Brass Plates 1 Nephi 3-5

Themes: Obedience, Faith, Courage, Diligence, Scripture Study

Opening Song: CSB 120, Nephi’s Courage verses 1 and 3 only

Opening Prayer:

Lesson: Lehi’s family was living in the wilderness. Lehi told his son Nephi that the Lord wanted Nephi and his brothers to go back to to get the brass plates, which were very important scriptures and records. It would be difficult but Nephi knew God would help them. did not want to go and did not have faith in the Lord. But they went with Nephi and back to Jerusalem to the house of Laban, where the brass plates were. Laman went first to ask Laban for the plates but Laban was angry and wanted to kill Laman! Laman escaped and told his brothers that Laban would not give him the plates. They decided to go back to their old house and collect all of their precious belongings to take back to Laban to buy the Brass Plates from him. When Laban saw the treasures, he kept them for himself but did not give the brothers the plates. Laban sent men after the brothers to kill them! Lehi’s sons hid in a cave for safety. Laman and Lemuel were mad at Nephi for leading them into danger. They began to beat up Nephi and Sam with sticks. But then an appeared and told them to stop! The angel said the Lord would help them get the plates and that Nephi was a good leader. Nephi convinced his brothers to try again, so they went back to Jerusalem and hid outside the city walls while Nephi went to Laban’s to get the plates. On his way to Laban’s, Nephi saw a drunk man lying in the street. It was Laban! Nephi saw Laban’s sword and picked it up. The Holy Ghost told Nephi to kill Laban with the sword so that Nephi could get the plates. Nephi did not want to, but the Holy Ghost told him again to kill Laban so he could take the plates back to his family and they could learn the gospel from them. Nephi obeyed the Holy Ghost and killed Laban with the sword. Then he dressed in Laban’s clothes and went into the house to get the Brass Plates. He met Laban’s servant, Zoram, who gave Nephi the plates because he thought he was Laban. Nephi then told Zoram to follow him. He lead him outside the city to Lehi’s sons. Laman, Lemuel and Sam thought Nephi was Laban and were scared! They began to run, but Nephi called for them and told them it was he. Zoram then tried to run away, but Nephi stopped him and promised him they would not hurt him if he did not

try to escape and he wanted Zoram to come with them in the wilderness. Zoram agreed, and they all journeyed back to Lehi’s camp. Lehi and Sariah were so happy their sons returned in safety with the Brass Plates. They studied from the scriptures and knew it was important that they worked so hard to get the plates.

Scripture Highlights: 1 Nephi 3:7

And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.

1 Nephi 4:6

And I was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do.

1 Nephi 4:13

Behold the Lord slayeth the wicked to bring forth his righteous purposes. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief.

1 Nephi 5:21

And we had obtained the records which the Lord had commanded us, and searched them and found that they were desirable; yea, even of great worth unto us, insomuch that we could preserve the commandments of the Lord unto our children.

Application: Have your children each pick a toy they love that they would be willing to trade for the scriptures. Explain why the scriptures are more important than toys or electronics. Explain that if they love playing with their toys often, they could love reading the scriptures often, too.

Optional Activity: Print off the scripture story page and have the children color it in. Save it in a binder and collect each story page to make your own illustrated Storybook!

Printing instructions: Print off the illustration first, then feed the same page in to print the words on the back of the illustration page.
