He stumbled to the bathroom. Hearing to his dismay the cushioned but resolute footsteps of Carl on the stairs below, he made a dash for it. He mumbled a few words before scampering in and bolting the door, his hands clasped over his groin. Sober for over a year--and now this! Several embarrassing incidents had made him want to stop. He would drink between half and a full bottle of Bell's whisky a day on top of tranquillizers. One night he woke up in his best navy blue pin-striped suit, lying on his back halfway in the greenhouse doorway. The profound contemplation of the stars was the last thing he remembered. Halfway up the path there was a whisky bottle. Lately, morphine had been his main sedative, but he was still taking the odd Diazepam just out of habit. Regardless of whose company he was in, he would sit swigging from a bottle of Kaolin and Morphine mixture, up to three a day. When the kids were playing in the street outside, during the school holidays, they were a regular source of annoyance to him.

    ‘Kardinia’: a novel and exegesis Catherine Harris Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy College of Arts, Victoria University Melbourne, Australia August 2015 Abstract This doctoral thesis is concerned with two interrelated components exploring literary form and style as they relate to the reading and writing of unsympathetic characters. Section one (30%), the analytical written component, examines these themes in light of three novels that have influenced my creative work: The member of the wedding (Carson McCullers), After leaving Mr. Mackenzie (Jean Rhys) and The driver’s seat (Muriel Spark). These novels have all been criticised for formal considerations, often attributed to socio-cultural qualities such as the authors’ gender, ethnicity, and/or personal histories, that inhibit readers’ engagement with the narrative. Rather than looking to reconcile these elements, this exegesis aims to find a theoretical bridge that enables a complementary analysis of the texts without resorting to essentialism. Douglas’s notion of dirt as “matter out of place” and Kristeva’s use of abjection present as useful analytical terms, but key components of their frameworks limit their applicability across place and time. Duschinsky’s “purity discourses” remedies these limitations, incorporating dirt and abjection into a flexible, non- essentialist, ideologically contingent theoretical mechanism.     Ancient Long Island HE Indians whom the first white men found dwelling on Long Island belonged to the Mohegan nation, but were split into a dozen tribes. The most numerous and powerful tribe in the westward reaches of the island were the Canarsies, who were also the first Ameri- cans to greet Henry Hudson and his men. The for- mer tells us in his journal that when he came to anchor in Gravesend Bay on the 4th of September, 1609, the Canarsies hastened to board his vessel and give him welcome. They were clad in deer-skins, and brought with them green tobacco, which they exchanged for knives and beads. Hudson further records that when they visited him on the second day some wore "mantles of feathers," and others "divers sorts of good furs"; and he adds that they had great store of maize or Indian corn, "whereof they make good bread," and currant's, some of which, dried, his men brought to him from the land, and which, he says, were "sweet and good." A party from Hudson's ship landed on the second day in what is now the town of Gravesend, where they found "great store of men, women and children," dwelling in a country full of tall oaks. he lands were as pleasant with grass, and flowers, and goodly trees as ever they had seen, and very sweet smells came from them." But another landing on the third day of some of Hudson's crew had tragic issue. John Colman, an Englishman, in some manner gave mortal offense to the Indians, and in the fight that followed he was killed by an arrow shot in the throat, while two of his comrades were wounded.
