Below Is Character Information As Given to the Directors for Consideration When Casting Below is character information as given to the directors for consideration when casting. Please remember that what is written below are suggestions to the directors, not the be-all, end-all definition or description of the characters. In addition, please remember that vocal ranges are within reason as well because pitches out of someone's range can always be rewritten into range or speak-sung. Keep the following in mind when considering the different characters and descriptions to help understand the overall plot and message of the musical. *We hope to build a diverse cast with actors of all genders, races, abilities, etc. If you have questions please contact the Producer. FEMALE LEAD ROLES BELLE: Belle is the original fairy tale heroine–kind, gentle, and an academic. She is a strong, intelligent, spirited and independent woman. Belle is the moral conscience of the story, elevated by her thoughts and deeds. The maturity and depth of her character allow her to see the true beauty and spirit within The Beast, and to love him for it. This role requires a very strong singer. Note: Belle will be the narrator of her own story. Vocal Range: Soprano (Low A-High F) MRS. POTTS: Mrs. Potts is a warm-hearted, maternal enchanted teapot. She is often the mother figure to Belle. A very strong singer needed for this role as Mrs. Potts sings the title song Beauty and the Beast. This character speaks with a British accent. Vocal Range: Alto/Mezzo (Low F#-High G) MALE LEAD ROLES BEAST: The Beast’s tortured soul is evident for all to see. He is paying the ultimate price for a moment of mean-spiritedness, and wishes beyond wishing that he could rectify his mistake. There is anger and menace in The Beast’s appearance and behavior, but increasingly we see his soft and endearing side as he interacts with Belle. It becomes clear that he is a loving, feeling, human being trapped within a hideous creature’s body. This role requires a very strong singer, and the actor must have a strong speaking voice and stage presence. Vocal Range: Baritone (A–High F) GASTON: Gaston is the absolute antithesis of The Beast. Although he is physically handsome, he is shallow, completely self-centered, not very bright, and thrives on attention. However, when his ego is bruised he becomes a very dangerous foe for The Beast, Belle and Maurice. This role requires a strong singer and character actor who moves well. Vocal Range: Baritone (A–High F) LUMIERE: Lumiere is the French butler who was transformed into a Candelabrum. He is light-hearted, suave, romantic, smooth-talking, and charming. He has a romantic involvement with Babette. This character speaks with a French accent. This role requires strong character acting, and he should move well. Vocal Range: Tenor/Baritone (A-High F#) GENDER NEUTRAL ‘PANTS’ ROLES - With support from MTI and Disney, the director is seeking to be inclusive of TAP's community by considering all genders for the following: COGSWORTH: Cogsworth is a tightly-wound, enchanted mantle clock and the head of the Beast’s household. He is a stuffy Englishman who loves perfection. This character speaks with a British accent. This role requires strong character acting. Vocal Range: Baritone (A-High E) CHIP & Siblings: Chip is an inquisitive little teacup who is the son of Mrs. Potts. Looking for young actors ages 9-13 to play the role and siblings. Actors should move well and feel comfortable working with adults. Vocal Range: Boy/girl Unchanged Voice (D-High D) MONSIEUR D'ARQUE: D’arque is the creepy, scheming proprietor of the local insane asylum, The Maison De Lune. This character speaks with a French accent. Vocal Range: Tenor (D-High A) LEFOU: Lefou is Gaston’s dim-witted, servile sidekick. He goes to extraordinary lengths and suffers repeated humiliation in his efforts to please his master. The actor must be comfortable with physical comedy, and the role requires strong character acting. Vocal Range: Baritone (B-High F#) FEMALE SUPPORTING ROLES BABETTE: Babette is a saucy, enchanted feather-duster, and the object of Lumiere's affections. This role requires good character acting and she should move well, as she dances a tango with Lumiere during Be Our Guest. This character speaks with a French accent. Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano (C-C) MADAME DE LA GRANDE BOUCHE: Madame is a former opera diva turned enchanted wardrobe. This character speaks with a French accent. Vocal Range: Soprano (C#-High G) THREE SILLY GIRLS: The silly girls are three pretty young maids who swoon over Gaston. They are featured dancers. MALE SUPPORTING ROLES MAURICE: Despite being a bit scatterbrained, there is no mistaking Maurice’s steadfast love for his daughter Belle. Kind, gentle, enthusiastic and inventive, he becomes single-minded and determined when Belle faces danger. Maurice and Belle sing the lovely duet No Matter What. Vocal Range: Baritone (Bb-High Db) ENSEMBLE ROLES ENSEMBLE (TOWNSPEOPLE - THE ENCHANTED OBJECTS) There are MANY additional ensemble roles. The ensemble is very busy throughout the show. There are several solo lines in songs like Belle and The Mob Song, and many great dance numbers (Gaston, Be Our Guest, and Human Again). The Enchantress, Young Prince, the Baker, the Baker’s wife, and the Bookseller are all chorus members. The Villager Ensemble (Belle, Gaston, Mob Song), and Enchanted Ensemble (Be Our Guest, Human Again, Mob Song), will overlap in many songs, and may play a “primary part” and “secondary part” within BOTH ensembles in order to create the ambience of the show. TEEN ENSEMBLE: Looking for actors ages 13-18 of all vocal ranges. Actors will play multiple roles and should be comfortable working with adults. FEATURED DANCERS: We will be looking to cast about 5-8 featured dancers for the show. These dancers should be comfortable singers and be prepared to sing in all ensemble numbers as well. Featured Dancers will be WOLVES (for Wolf Chase #1 and #2), NAPKINS (for Enchanted Ensemble), and will be featured dancers in the VILLAGER ENSEMBLE as well. .

  • Disney Songs Musical Elements
1 Classroom Online Resource Document (CORD) Follow the Conductor: An Introduction to Musical Elements Gelareh Naseri [email protected] Gluck Fellows Program of the ARTS University of California, Riverside 2 Follow the Conductor: An Introduction to Musical Elements By learning about five main musical elements in this one-hour workshop, students learn to listen to music in a different way: more actively and more consciously. Also, identifying these elements in different pieces of music can lead them to appreciate and enjoy music more than before. Through related activities, students learn about these five musical elements: Beat, Meter, Tempo, Dynamics, and Pitch. The main activity in this workshop is finding these musical elements in Disney cartoon songs (while they are being played on a screen) and moving arms or clapping or singing following the conductor (the instructor). A list of all YouTube active listening examples (A to I) is given on page 4. Here are five musical elements that students learn about: 1. Beat (The pulse in music): Students move their body according to the beat of the music that they are listening to. Active video listening example: A 2. Meter (Duple and Triple): Students learn to move their arms and conduct a duple (or triple) meter and count up to two (or three). Then, they listen to two Disney songs, and find out if it is better to count up to two (for a duple meter song), or up to three (for a triple meter song) for each song. Active video listening examples: B and C (duple meter); D and E (triple meter) 3 3.

3 List of Characters Belle Townsfolk: Beast Aristocratic Lady Gaston Fish Man LeFou Egg Man Lumière Sausage Curl Girl Maurice Baker Lady with Cane Mrs. Potts Lady with Baby Cogsworth Candle Man Chip Hat Seller Madame de la Grande Bouche Milkmaid Babette Shepherd’s Boy Monsieur D’Arque 3 Silly Girls Ensemble roles: Townsfolk, Angry Mob, Servants (Flatware & Dishware) Brief Character Breakdown in Beauty and the Beast, Jr. BELLE is a smart, confident young woman from a small village. We are looking for a strong singer and actress. Ideally, she should be able to transition from her chest voice to a chest voice/head voice mix comfortably. Belle needs to be able to stand up to Gaston (and the Beast!) as well as those who don’t seem to understand her, while being able to show compassion for her father, the Servants, and eventually the Beast. MAURICE is an eccentric, older inventor, yet more importantly, the adoring and protective father of Belle. This non-solo singing role is perfect for the student who can have fun interpreting this “crazy old man” while conveying some very strong emotions: fear and fatherly love! The BEAST/PRINCE is the master of the castle who was transformed by the Enchantress’s spell. Casting for size is not as important as choosing a student that can handle this complex character: a dictator, a hurt child, a hero, a defender and a smitten prince. We are looking for an actor who can deliver a range of conflicting emotional states. The Beast and Prince may be cast as separate roles.
