HISTORICAL NOTE Whaling logbooks are the written description and official record of a whaling voyage. Maintaining it was the responsibility of the chief mate of the ship. Journals are unofficial documents written by anyone aboard the ship. Both types of manuscripts provide descriptions of what life was like on the vessel including weather and sea conditions, crew activities, encounters with other vessels, experiences at various ports, and of course, encounters with whales and the business of whaling.

Mr. Paul Coe Nicholson (1888-1956) was born in Providence, R.I., the son of Samuel W. Nicholson who was the president of both Nicholson File Company and American Screw Company. He attended Yale University and became his father’s successor at Nicholson File Company. He developed a hobby in collecting maritime historical ephemera which resulted in forming the premier private collection of whaling logbooks. It included an outstanding collection of hundreds of manuscript logbook as well as several thousand printed books on whaling. His collection also contained scrimshaw, a narwhal tusk, three harpoons, a harpoon gun, prints and photographs and ship models. At the suggestion of Mr. Stuart C. Sherman, then librarian of Providence Public Library, Mr. Nicholson bequeathed the collection to the Library upon his death in 1956. Since the original collection was acquired, Providence Public Library has continued to add new

SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION The collection includes almost 800 volumes of manuscript logbooks, journals and account books describing over 1,000 whaling voyages. Volumes include crew lists and accounts of work and life onboard; lists of provisions, shipping receipts and accounts; observations of astronomy, weather, and sea conditions; descriptions of encounters with marine life especially hunting whales and elephant seals; descriptions of encounters with other vessels and wrecks; and personal entries including poetry, illustrations and sketches.

ORGANIZATION OF THE COLLECTION The collection is described alphabetically by titled, but is shelved by format. Each volume is individually cataloged. For full descriptions of each volume, view the individual catalog record or search within the digitized collections.
