Frederick Alton Jewell
FREDERICK ALTON JEWELL Frederick Alton Jewell was born May 28, 1875, the sixth of seven children of Dudley and Emily Jewell of Worthington, a small town in Greene County (IN) about thirty-five miles west of Bloomington. Dudley was a traveling preacher, organist and cornet player who founded the Jewell Family Band around 1885. A highlight for this ensemble was performing during Benjamin Harrison’s successful campaign for the Presidency in 1888. Jewell ran away from home at the age of sixteen to join the Bloomington-based Gentry’s Equine & Canine Paradox, which would eventually become the highly successful Gentry Brothers Circus. Jewell played cornet, violin, and piano during his life, but his best performances were on the euphonium. Jewell became the bandmaster for Gentry by 1900, and his first published band works came from 1899. One of his most successful works was Gentry’s Triumphal, which was published by the C. L. Barnhouse Co. of Oskaloosa, IA in 1900. That firm would be his publisher for the next two decades and his friendship with Charles L. Barnhouse would lead to significant positions in Iowa following his circus career. More below in “The Circus Years” Jewell left touring life in 1918 at the age of forty-three. He took a position in Fairfield, IA. He would be in close proximity to the Barnhouse company and to an old friend, Cleveland Dayton, who was Jewell’s assistant conductor with Barnum & Bailey. Dayton was now the bandmaster in Ottumwa, a position he would hold for more than fifty years. He moved fifty-five miles further west to Oskaloosa at the request of C. -

USAF Professor of Music University of Texas at El Paso The American March THE OBVIOUS 1. Sir Donald Tovey identifies two basic types of rhythms – Speech and Body. I refer to these are music for the Brain and music for the Feet. 2. Marches are functional, physical and artistic. 3. Melody and articulation reigns supreme in marches. 4. Basic Types of Marches – Concert, Funeral or Dirge, Street (Military and Regimental), Quick Step and Circus (Screamers). PERFOMANCE ISSUES FOR ALL ENSEMBLES INTONATION 1. Tuners are good for one note only. Use your ears! 2. Intonation – tune unisons first, then octaves, then fifths. For the perception of good intonation, the bottom octave is perceived as correct as it is heard as the fundamental. Thirds will take care of themselves. 3. Ensembles play or sing in Pythagorean/Just tuning, not equal temperament. 4. Tuning Pitch (clarinet especially) – CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) content is greater when air flow begins making the pitch sharp for a moment until the air mixture stabilizes. PERFORMANCE PRACTICE 1. Articulate with more strength in quieter passages, not more legato or softer. 2. Attacks – Chewing the note, typically the first note of the piece. 3. Play full value – of course, if under a crescendo or diminuendo this does not apply. 4. Play rhythms as slowly as possible within the tempo to avoid compression. -

The recital was held on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 in the “New Gym” of the Sedan Jr./Sr. High School. The recital featured performances by the following ensembles: 5 th Grade String Ensemble, 5 th Grade Band, 6 th Grade Band, 5 th & 6 th Grade Bands joined for 2 selections, Jr./Sr. High Concert Band. The 5 th Grade String Ensemble played Lightly Row, This Old Man, French Folk Song, Bingo and The William Tell Overture. The 5 th Grade Band played Downtown Blues, Sounds of Beale Street, Barbara Ann and Hard Rock Blues and the 6 th Grade Band played Brave New World, Sir Lancelot, Percussion On Parade and Surprise Symphony. The 5 th & 6 th Grade Bands joined together to play Soul Swinger.
