THOMAS MAGAZINE 27 Fall Round-up Athletics

By Cameron Creamer ’15, M.B.A. ’16 Thomas Athletics had one of its best starts in school history, thanks to a championship-filled fall season. Men’s Soccer won their fifth North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship and competed in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Field Hockey won its first NAC Championship in program history after an undefeated conference season and finished runner-up in the NECC Championship. Women’s Soccer finished their conference season undefeated and entered the NAC Tournament as the number one seed before falling in the championship game. Golf returned to the NCAA level this season and the team competed in its first NAC Championship since 2009.

Along with the team success this year, Thomas student-athletes had some great individual success. Cross Country junior Jarrod Ottman won the first NAC Individual Championship and Player of the Year in program history. Women’s Soccer freshman Katherine Hoving ranked third in the country with 27 goals on the season, the most goals in a season in program history, and was named NAC Rookie of the Year. Field Hockey’s Kelci Faulkingham was named NAC Player of the Year, while Tiffany Weeks earned Defensive Player of the Year. Kyle Patterson was also named NAC Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Year. The Terriers had 16 student-athletes named to All-Conference teams and also had two NAC Coaches of the Year in Field Hockey’s Andrea Thebarge and Women’s Soccer’s Deb Biche-Labbe.

The Terriers were well represented in the NAC Weekly Awards all season long as well. Field Hockey had six different players earn Player of the Week and sweep all three awards (Player, Rookie, and Defensive Player) six times. Jarrod Ottman was named Runner of the Week five times, while Men’s Soccer’s Jonathan Dutka won Defensive Player of the Week three times. Overall, the Terriers have had 15 Players/Runners of the Week, 15 Rookies of the Week, and 13 Defensive Players of the Week.

For the latest on Thomas Athletics, follow the Terriers on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @TCTerriers.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Men’s Soccer won their fifth North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship!

Honoring Rob Nutter ’12

On August 31, 2018, Rob Nutter, a graduate of the Class of 2012, lost his courageous battle with leukemia. As a student and teammate, Rob epitomized leadership and friendship. He was beloved among classmates and known for his dedication and sportsmanship.

This year, just two short months after his passing, Rob’s baseball teammates were inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame, a ceremony that kicked off Homecoming & Family Weekend.

In his memory, the Rob Nutter ’12 Teammate Award was announced at this year’s event and will be granted each spring to a graduating student-athlete known for their outstanding commitment and contributions to their team. The recipient is recognized for steadfast support and leadership to their fellow teammates.

Each year, the Rob Nutter ’12 Teammate Award winner will be invited to the annual Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner held that fall and will be recognized alongside that year’s inductees.

Baseball Coach and Professor Greg King, who coached Nutter and the honored 2012 team, said, “The Rob Nutter ’12 Teammate Award will ensure that Rob’s legacy will carry on and be forever remembered by the Thomas College community. The Award will serve as a constant reminder of his character, dedication, and fighting spirit. I consider this Award to be one of, if not the, most prestigious awards presented by the Thomas athletic department.”

Athletic Director Shanda Ness agreed, adding, “Being recognized as an exceptional teammate is the highest compliment in sports. Putting the needs of the team over your own is about character and who you are as a person, and those qualities are contagious and last a lifetime.”

36 | FALL 2018 MAGAZINE & ANNUAL REPORT | thomas.edu “The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” – Nelson Henderson

A planned gift to Thomas College, such as a bequest in your will, can help you achieve both personal financial goals and your philanthropic goals. With careful planning, you may also be able to contribute a larger gift than otherwise possible – and create a lasting legacy for generation of students to come.

Individuals who include the College in their plans are included in our Frank Bartlett Society, named for the dedicated and generous trustee who helped to establish the College’s endowment through a significant bequest.

No matter why you choose to include Thomas in your charitable plans, your support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
