Managing the Boundaries of Taste: Culture, Valuation, and Computational Social Science* Ryan Light University of Oregon Colin Odden Ohio State University Ohio Colleges of Medicine This is a pre-copyedited, author-produced version of an article accepted for publication in Social Forces following peer review. The version of record is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1093/sf/sox055. *Please direct all correspondence to Ryan Light, [email protected]. The authors thank James Moody, Jill Ann Harrison, Matthew Norton, Brandon Stewart, Achim Edelmann, Clare Rosenfeld Evans, Jordan Besek, and Brian Ott for their helpful comments on earlier drafts of this paper. Managing the Boundaries of Taste: Culture, Valuation, and Computational Social Science Abstract The proliferation of cultural objects, such as music, books, film and websites, has created a new problem: How do consumers determine the value of cultural objects in an age of information glut? Crowd-sourcing – paralleling word-of-mouth recommendations – has taken center stage, yet expert opinion has also assumed renewed importance. Prior work on the valuation of artworks and other cultural artifacts identifies ways critics establish and maintain classificatory boundaries, such as genre. We extend this research by offering a theoretical approach emphasizing the dynamics of critics’ valuation and classification. Empirically, this analysis turns to Pitchfork.com, an influential music review website, to examine the relationship between classification and valuation. Using topic models of fourteen years of Pitchfork.com album reviews (n=14,495), we model the dynamics of valuation through genre and additional factors predictive of positive reviews and cultural consecration. We use gold record awards to study the relationship between valuation processes and commercial outcomes.

HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

As the longtime man- Eager of Eminem, Rosenberg has been a substantial player in the unfolding of the ‘‘ modern era and the dominance of hip-hop in the last two decades. His work in that capacity naturally positioned him to seize the reins at the major label that brought rap to the mainstream. Before he began managing the best- selling rapper of all time, Rosenberg was an attorney, hustling in Detroit and New York but always intimately connected with the Detroit rap scene. Later on, he was a boutique-label owner, film producer and, finally, major-label boss. The success he’s had thus far required savvy and finesse, no question. But it’s been Rosenberg’s fearlessness and commitment to breaking barriers that have secured him this high perch. • JEN CLOHER Jen Cloher
JEN CLOHER Jen Cloher Album Biography: June 6, 2017 Album Release: August 11, 2017 “It’s self-titled.” The three-word answer is all that Jen Cloher requires to describe her new album, a letter in triplicate addressed to music, to Australia and to love. It’s the most honest album she’s ever written. Jen liKes best to tell the truth. Jen Cloher is the culmination of a period of artistic and personal growth in which the artist tooK her rightful place as the punk-rocK figurehead of Melbourne’s famous DIY music scene. The NIDA graduate is an outspoKen advocate for artist rights, a label boss and band-leader, she also happens to be the partner of acclaimed songwriter Courtney Barnett. Cloher’s fascinating life-story is enough justification to taKe notice here, but it’s the music that will have you returning to this album again and again. Cloher says: “It’s a classic rocK album, recorded live in one room with minimal overdubs… I’m not too good at going into descriptive language around my own music but I suppose it is intimate without ever feeling too precious.” The bulK of Cloher’s album was recorded in October 2016 by Greg WalKer amidst the rolling greenery of Jumbunna in Victoria’s Gippsland, these are songs of distance and songs of driving. Four years on, the band that first played together on Cloher’s acclaimed third album, the Australian Music Prize nominated In Blood Memory, are bold and assured. The songs are split here and there by the melodic intricacy of guitarist Courtney Barnett while drummer Jen Sholakis and bassist Bones Sloane add weight and space, playing only what is needed, leaving room for the songs to breathe, transform and soar.

A former member of SpaceGhostPurrp's Raider Klan , Denzel Curry is one of the precursors of the new generation of electro coming out of Florida. Now joined by such wild men as Smokepurrp, Ski Mask Da Slump God or the late XXXTentacion, Denzel has created a complex mix, which has been much-covered by his peers. To sum it up, his music is a mixture of very technical rap in the tradition of Memphis and the Three 6 Mafia and a rather more elevated psychedelic tendency taken from Outkast and the Dungeon Family. A pure product of the SoundCloud generation, he made waves with Nostalgic 64 (2013) and then Imperial (2016). At the age of just 23, Denzel Curry shows a disarming maturity and an unflagging versatility on TA13oo , his most ambitious album to date. TA13OO. The South Florida rapper carves out his own lane within the genre known as SoundCloud rap, displaying considerable versatility as he channels the pain and confusion of youth. Featured Tracks: In the chaotic arena that is SoundCloud rap, Denzel Curry has etched out his own distinct realm. Presumably he doesn’t mind being tagged as a SoundCloud rapper, as murky and hard to define as that term is. It was just in May that Curry went to the mattresses to uphold his version of the genre’s history, using Twitter and interviews to torpedo Smokepurpp’s claim to have fathered the movement.

  • 1/08 Jan|Feb
    # 1/08 JAN|FEB KAPU ZINE EDITORIAL Salut! Was passiert ansonsten in der neuen KAPU-Saison?

the CarmelA CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT PUBLICATION Sandpiper VOLUME XL FEBRUARY 2019 thesandpiper.org CAMPUS Carmel’s youth take to the field Lopez reassigned, Next Level Football will not return as principal in fall BY ATHENA-FOSLER BRAZIL Carmel High School Principal Rick Lopez will not be re- turning to his position for the 2019-20 school year, news which he announced to the CHS staff on Jan. 24. The decision, made by second-year Superintendent Barb Dill-Varga, came as a shock to CHS faculty. Lopez has requested reassignment within the school district. Though Lopez says he could not provide staff with an ex- planation for why his position at the high school was terminated, Dill-Varga cites the reason for Lopez’s removal from his position as a need for a “fresh perspective” at CHS, which she hopes to take in a “new direction.” “The District is grateful to Mr. Lopez for the hard work he has done to help CHS attain many achievements over the past 10 years,” Dill-Varga wrote in a media release sent out Jan. 25. The statement announced the district’s search for a new principal, set photo by PETER ELLISON to begin in early February and conclude in April. The CHS principal is able to say little more than Dill-Varga Senior Robert Mowry coaches his team of first and second grade students during a about the reasons given for his reassignment. “The district has chosen to go a different direction for the Sunday morning practice. Bay Area rapper the Jacka spent his 2008 on mixtapes and collaboration albums, working those circuits so hard that you'd think he'd have nothing left for his high-profile 2009 release, Tear Gas. It's a bit of an uneven effort and the layout is all wrong -- opening with the hazy, lazy "Summer" just feels weird -- but overall it's a surprising success, especially when taking his abundant output into account. Jacka is a confident, talented, and believable gangster with a newfound hunger to cross over, something that seems much more possible here than on his respected 2006 album, Jack of All Trades. The Traxamillion-produced "Glamorous Lifestyle" is the club track to pick with its loose and easy hook, one that's perfectly tailored for Jacka's quick delivery and his light, arguably weak voice.
