In addition to major contributions in the classroom, DePaul Mittman served as Defensive Coordinator for the Western Guilford football team. He completed his time with football in the late 1990's and focused his attention on his passion, track and field. In his time as head track coach, he advocated to have the track refinished. Please accept this letter as support for dedicating and naming the Western Guilford High School track in honor of former Coach De Paul Mittman.

I am an alumnus of Western Guilford High School, class of 2004, and a former student and track member of Coach Mittman. During my four years, I established an excellent rapport with Coach Mittman that still lasts to this day.

He exemplifies what it means to be a positive role model and support system for students of all ages.

He taught me what it means to be part of a team - no matter my role, what hard work and commitment is, and how to have fun with others whom I may never have gotten to know if not for him.

Coach Mittman did not just treat his students like students, but like family. He guided us in the classroom, on the track/field, as well as life, in general.

In the classroom he challenged us to think beyond the surface level of the subject and think critically about the issue. On the track he gave us the resources and encouragement to push beyond our limits and learn what it really means to soar.

When it came time to look at colleges, he had long conversations with me regarding my future aspirations and the type of college that would best suit my goals. He even wrote a letter of reference when I applied.

Dedicating and naming this track in honor of Coach DePaul Mittman would be a small way ofthanking him for his many years of dedication to his students and teams. More importantly, it would mean a tremendous deal to him, his family, and every individual who's life is better for simply knowing Coach Mittman.

Thank you for your consideration

Jillian Lincourt, M.S.

c/o 2004 To Whom it may concern,

It is with great pleasure that I nominate the dedication of the Western Guilford High School track to Mr. DePaul Mittman. He has exceeded the challenging requirements and expectations for this dedication. To further support this dedication, I would be pleased to express in more detail my personal insights into Coach Mittman's unique talents and qualifications.

Coach Mittman meant a lot to me in my high school career, on and off the track. He taught me the basics on the track which transferred into the basics of life. You have to "run through the pocket, run through the pocket," I remember him saying. I took that to mean when you feel like you are slipping in your classwork or in life, remember what you were told or taught to do correctly. I still think of Coach Mittman telling me to run through the pockets today, when I run.

My junior year at Western Guilford I managed to let me grade slip a little bit. When Coach Mittman found out he was right there for me. I remember sitting in the Athletic Directors (Coach Griffin) office and trying to figure out a plan to help me with my academics. He checked in on me until I got my grades together. Not just for athletics but for my future. I never had someone care about my grades as much as he did during that time. To me, that's what a coach and a mentor does for students.

I went on the play at Fayetteville State University and running is about 80% of basketball. I spent countless hours on the track in college conditioning for the basketball season and countless hours running miles and miles. My speed and knowledge of how to use that speed helped me to be successful in my college basketball career. And once again I owe that all to Coach Mittman.

Coach Mittman taught me how to really run track and field. We didn't just go through the motions, we learned the skills to be successful on the track, and we were successful. Leaving WGHS I was able to say that I was a State Champion twice, and All State for 3 years in a row. And I give all that credit to Coach Mittman. When I think about WGHS track and field I think about Coach Mittman, and I'm sure a lot of other people can say the same. He deserves to be recognized and applauded for all of his accomplishments.

Thank you Coach Mittman for making such an impact on my life and others at WGHS!

Jamillah Simpson Western Guilford High School (1995-1999) Class of 1999 To whom it may concern,

I would like to write this letter in support of naming Western Guilford's Track after Coach DePaul Mittman. I do not know another person who would deserve this honor more than him. In his years of coaching and teaching at WGHS, he has made a great impact on so many students and student athletes. In addition to being a great coach and teacher, Coach Mittman is an amazing person and has truly dedicated himself to every one of his students. Finally, his love and efforts in track and field were not only seen at Western Guilford but also an entire Guildford County and even state level. He is a true inspiration to many.

Coach Mittman is without a doubt one of the most dedicated teachers and coaches I have met. He was my track and field coach for 3 years at Western Guilford. He has always treated every student and athlete with the same respect and equality no matter their grades, race, gender, nationality, beliefs. He saw potential in every student he came in contact with. With his encouragement, I have seen many gain confidence, courage, and beliefthat they are able to succeed. I was one of those student athletes. With his encouragement and him believing in me, I was able to become the best me that I could be. He led me and my team to several conference, regionals, and state championships! His incomparable knowledge ofthe sport, coaching techniques, and his love for what he did has made Western Guilford one of the best track and field programs in the state. His coaching and dedication made me in turn a successful college-level athlete. It was in huge part because of his hard work, dedication, and efforts to me during my high school years that I was able to receive one of the most prestigious awards, in my mind, as I was inducted into the inaugural class of the athletic hall of fame for Western Guilford High School this fall.

In addition to being a great coach and teacher, Coach Mittman is an amazing person. Over and over again, he went out of his way to help his students and his athletes outside of school activities. He truly cared about everyone. He took care of us as if we were his family. In my 3 years of him coaching me, he always made sure I had a ride home from practices. He has always made sure that everything in my home was going OK. He has helped me with the college recruitment process. He took time out of his personal life to help me as he even drove me and toured a university with me in efforts to help me chose the best school for me and to help me shape my future. I have seen him do similar things for others as well. His love and efforts to help others are like no one else and I do not know any other person who has done as much for his students as him.

In addition to being an amazing coach, teacher, person, Coach Mittman has also made a great impact on the track and field community in the state of North Carolina. During my years at school, we have done multiple fund raisers and he fought to get funding to build and maintain the best and safest equipment for Western Guilford. He used our facility to host multiple meets for other schools who were not as fortunate to have the same equipment. We hosted conference and regionals meets every year that I was in school. In addition, with his knowledge of the sport and desire to help, he has helped to run numerous state level events and state meets. His efforts to improve the sport were known all over North Carolina. In conclusion, I again would like to reiterate my support in naming Western Guilford Track after Coach Mittman. In his many years at this school he has touched and changed lives of so many students and student athletes, and I am definitely one of them. Without his help, his belief in me, his dedication, I would not have come close to how much I was able to accomplish and become and person I am now. I will forever remember him on that Black and Gold colored track with a start gun in his hand. That is where his efforts, his soul, and his heart was for so many years, and naming it with his name would be one way of thanking him for all the hard work, dedication, efforts, and time.

Sincerely, Tatyana Kirichenko WGHS c/o 2001 11/17/2017

Alan Duncan, Chairman Guilford County School Board 712 N Eugene Street Greensboro, NC 27401

Dear Alan,

I am honored as a long-time resident of Greensboro, proud product of Guilford County Schools and Alumnus of Western Guilford High School to write you and the board in support of my former teacher, mentor, colleague and friend Coach DePaul Mittman.

I fully support naming our Western Guilford High School Track after Coach Mittman. Let's honor a man who has sacrificed so much developing students academically in the classrooms and outside of the classroom. The contributions he has made to Western Guilford and Guilford County Schools are worth noting and recognizing as he is one of the best if not the best coaches for track we have ever seen. He is highly respected throughout North Carolina and the nation because of who he is and the discipline he institutes in his program for staff, students and athletes.

Although I played football and was not one of his athletes he taught me history and challenged me to push myself to greatness and because of his positive impact on me I still hold on to those key life things he taught me. Due to his impact on so many of us over the years we have come to know that Coach Mittman loves his family, students, athletes and track as a sport. Coach Mittman doesn't know but because of his mentorship he saved me, opened my eyes and heart to many aspects of life and I am forever thankful.

I understand that many in the community have voiced support as well for a man who deserves to be recognized for all he has done not only in our community, regionally and state wide but nationally. You have a high caliber professional who has left it all out on the field for the betterment of so many and I believe it is time we return the favor with this honor.

I urge you and your colleagues to move forward and vote to name the Western Guilford Track after Coach DePaul Mittman and thank him for his dedication to educating and empowering our future.

Hornet Pride!

Sincerely,

To Members of the Guilford County Board of Education,

My name is Alton E. Tyre, Sr. and I am a Social Studies Teacher and Head Men's and Women's Track and Field Coach at Southeast Guilford High School. I am writing to support naming the Western Guilford Track in honor of my good friend and "track brother'' De Paul Mittman.

I have known De Paul for almost 25 years. We met working State Track Meets together in the early 1990s. Since that time, he and I have worked on meets together at the school, county, regional, state, and national level. I remember when he put Western Guilford on the map as a powerhouse Girls Track program in the 1990s and early 2000s. His crowning achievement was winning the 1999 3A State Girls Championship. In addition to winning the state championship in 1999, De Paul won numerous invitational, conference, and regional championships. During that time, DePaul also produced several athletes that earned college scholarships to continue their careers. A number of DePaul's athletes competed at the Division I level and enjoyed success.

In addition to the success he had at Western Guilford, DePaul has been a tireless worker in the administration of track and field meets. For approximately a decade, DePaul has been the overall State Meet Director for the NCHSAA Indoor and Outdoor State Championships. In this capacity, De Paul is responsible for all entries, communicating with regional directors and coaches, securing ticket takers, printing the official program and serving as the liaison between the North Carolina Coaches Association and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. DePaul has worked with the NCHSAA to improve the efficiency of state meets with has contributed to a dramatic increase in quality performances at the State Championships. For his role as the Overall State Meet Director and other services performed for the NCHSAA, he has been awarded the Homer Thompson Award.

One of De Paul's greatest legacies is the role he plays as Executive Director of the North Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association. He was among the founding members, a former President, and now serves as Executive Director. In this role, he organized an annual track and field clinic featuring successful college and high school coaches, Olympic athletes, and other clinicians with various track and field expertise. The NCTCCCA also vets and formulates proposals to the NCCA and the NCHSAA. To improve the knowledge of track and field among coaches and other interested parties, De Paul started a National Federation rules session at the clinic where coaches can interact with clinicians regarding common issues at track meets and go over rules. At the conclusion of this session, coaches take a National Federation test where they can become certified officials. These sessions have greatly improved the quality of meets at all levels. At the clinic, DePaul also conducts a Meet Management session. In this session, DePaul teaches coaches and other interested parties the essentials of running an efficient track meet. This is session is in high demand at the clinic each year. He also works closely with the Greensboro Sports Commission to secure large meets for Greensboro. Another important part of DePaul's legacy is the relationship he has built with JDL Fast Track. Shortly, after reading an article about the conversion of a warehouse in Winston-Salem into an indoor track, DePaul traveled to Winston-Salem, met the financiers and planners, and immediately earned their trust and respect. DePaul served as a consultant and played a major role in the layout ofthe facility. JDL Fast Track has quickly become one of the most popular indoor track facilities in the country. He serves as Coordinator of High School Meets at JDL and directs meets almost every weekend there.

DePaul also makes a major contribution as a USATF official and Volunteer Coordinator for meets. He travels all over the country officiating college meets. Each summer he serves as the Volunteer Coordinator for the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Championships at A & T. He is responsible for securing 100s of volunteers for one ofthe largest outdoor meets in the country. He also serves as Volunteer Coordinator for the NCAA, AAU, USATF, and other large meets that come to Greensboro.

DePaul serves a Deacon at his church and works with a citywide bible-teaching group. He has mentored thousands of young people and adults and in his role as a Social Studies Teacher at Western Guilford and later at T. Wingate Andrews High School. He is a dedicated friend who always friends the highest degree of honor, respect and integrity.

It is my pleasure to write this letter and recommend that the track complex at Western Guilford High School be named in honor of my friend and "track brother" DePaul Mittman. No one is more deserving.

Respectfully submitted,

Alton E. Tyre, Sr. Social Studies Teacher/Department Chairman Head Men's and Women Track and Field Coach Southeast Guilford High School November 20, 2017

To Whom This May Concern,

DePaul is also one of the most organized administrators of larger scale track and field meets. He has overseen the four classifications in all the state meets for many years and has always administered those meets in a professional manner. I have worked under DePaul on many occasions in meet administration and learned so much in regards to meet management. He was always ethical and fair to all coaches and athletes.

Over the years DePaul has been a role model to not just the athletes he has coached, but to young coaches getting into the track and field. He is respected by all coaches at all levels of coaching.

The program he developed at Western Guilford HS was a model program for other schools to follow and this was done all on the watch of DePaul Mittman. He raised funds for his program which took a great burden off his schools athletics budget. He involved his athletes parents better than any other school I have been involved with, which shows the great admiration they had for DePaul.

In closing, I would highly recommend DePaul for any or all recognition that he is greatly deserving of. He is an outstanding family man and a pillar in the community and deserves all commendations awarded.

Re: Support for honoring Coach DePaul Mittman

Please accept this letter of support for the effort underway to name the track at Western Guilford High School in honor of longtime educator and coach DePaul Mittman. I have known DePaul for many years and it would be difficult to find a person who has been as recognized, respected, devoted, and impactful as a Guilford County school educator, mentor and coach. I count it a privilege to endorse this initiative by his former students, colleagues and friends and will speak to his qualifications for this honor based upon the established criteria.

DePaul's career as a teacher and coach in middle schools and high schools within Guilford County spanned 34 years, a remarkable period in which he served as a social studies and history teacher in addition to extracurricular roles as Head Track Coach and as a high school assistant athletics director and football coach. His 23-year service at Western Guilford High School is especially noteworthy, which included an 83% winning percentage as a track and field coach.

In terms of career accomplishments, DePaul has earned numerous awards and recognition from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (including NCHSAA 3A Coach of the Year) and was a 16-time selection as conference track and field coach of the year. His teams won 15 conference championships and a state title as well, and his list of student-athlete honors includes 2 All-Americans and 64 All-State honorees, 16 of whom earning individual state titles. Because of his success and reputation as a coach, DePaul has been a meet director for numerous local, conference, state and national track and field as well as cross country championships. His resume reflecting his leadership capabilities is incredibly impressive and rivals the best in the profession.

Many will speak to DePaul's influence as a role model and mentor, and he is highly regarded for his sense of fairness, honesty, commitment, and integrity. His personal and professional standards are high and his striving for excellence is something he has always expected of himself and all those under his watch. DePaul is well known nationally as an exception meet director and official and he has been extremely valuable in helping Greensboro host some of the most prestigious track and field events in the country. I can think of no one more deserving of this type of recognition by the Guilford County Schools and hope you will seriously consider this opportunity to recognize one of your very best.
