A 1969 graduate from St. Louis University, he served for more than 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and the Air Force Reserve where he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1992. WSBR: The Voice of Saratoga Bridges After reading an article in the NY Times about Lifestyles for the Disabled, Kurt Freeman, our Implementation and Information Specialist, pictured left, conceptualized a radio station where our individuals would become radio personalities. WSBR (their call letters), “The Voice of Saratoga Bridges”, was created from this idea. Since then, the WSBR crew meets twice a week to discuss program ideas, interview planning, editing and other tech tools needed to create a professional sounding product. They record brief talk show segments and post them online as podcasts on wsbr. saratogabridges.org. As the 35 individuals involved have varied abilities, staff members are incorporating assistive technology to enable people who have limited speech, literacy issues or other barriers the chance to participate. They are creating and airing segments as unique as the people who make them, playing music they like, sharing news about our community, conducting interviews with people who inspire them and communicating their interests. By giving individuals a voice in the community, they are becoming less marginalized and more active self-advocates. WSBR radio has already become another avenue in which our individuals are passionately involved, are visibly and actively participating throughout and are exceeding our and their own expectations. Some of the many benefits include being productive and independent, developing self-respect, building confidence, improving self-esteem, learning tangible skills such as the ability to speak to people and interviewing techniques, learning  editing and broadcasting, becoming another public face of the agency and acting as role models to their peers. Ultimately, we feel WSBR can dramatically enhance and transform their lives. We are pleased to feature the many poems & paintings by our One of the exciting results of WSBR was the receipt of a generous grant of $6,423.25 from the GLOBALFOUNDRIES-The Town of Malta Foundation! This allowed us to purchase the own individuals throughout necessary equipment for WSBR. this Annual Report

National Disability Employment Awareness Month In October, we celebrated National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). First enacted in 1945, Congress passed a law declaring the first week in October each year “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week”. In 1962, the word “physically” and in 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name. The goal of the month is to increase the public’s awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. We welcomed the opportunity to be one of the 165 community rehabilitation agencies and private sector busi- ness partners to submit an individual for the William B. Joslin Award. We selected John Toker (pictured right) for this people-centered recognition from NYS Industries for the Disabled (NYSID). The Award was established in 2004 to acknowledge Joslin who was a pioneer and leader in the field of disabilities. It celebrates excellent vocational performance and personal successes of people employed on NYSID preferred source contracts. John is an energetic, outgoing and very likeable young man who is always open to new experiences. He grew up in Albany, NY, graduated from Albany High School in 2011 and has been working in the Fire-Bag™ Firewood component of Alpha Industries since. For John, being hired for a job, learning to work and receiving a paycheck were his life’s goals. He packages kiln-dried firewood in a Preferred Source Program status that meets New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and State of Massachusetts specifications for moisture content and quality for campground purposes. They utilize high quality, dry, easy-to-start mixed northern hardwoods that are packaged in recyclable heavy-duty bags with carrying handles. John’s job is to take out pieces, fill a mesh bag, close it and carry it back to an empty wire cage for stacking, wrapping and shipping. In addition, John delivers inter-office mail from building to building 3 times a day. Further, he is part of a lawn care crew. In every position, John is succeeding! Bridges to Skidmore Celebration On Monday, April 29th, the ‘Bridges to Skidmore’ Program held their third graduation and certificate ceremony in Skidmore’s Murray-Aikins Dining Hall. 7th Annual Joyce Spratt Memorial For the 4th consecutive year, the Spratt family graciously made Saratoga Bridges the beneficiary of funds raised at the 7th Annual Joyce Spratt Memorial Golf Outing. This year’s event took place at Brookhaven Golf Course on October 5th and generated over $4,000 NET for our Foundation and Family Support Services Programs. Joyce was a loving wife and mother of 4 boys and sadly passed away after a battle with cancer. Her son Christopher is the Vice President of Saratoga Bridges’ Foundation Board and had this to say about the event and why they chose to support Saratoga Bridges, “Losing her at the age of 46 from cancer was devastating for everyone whose life she touched. This tournament is to celebrate her life and an opportunity for her friends and family to get together and laugh and have fun. We have chosen to donate the proceeds from the past 3 years to Saratoga Bridges. My brother Todd has a learning disability and because the organization has done so much for our family throughout the years, it was a natural choice. We all know that she would be so proud that this money is being used to help other indi- viduals with disabilities and their families.”

Awards and Scholarships We are pleased to announce the recipient of the NYSARC Jonathan Weingold Scholarship is Carol Goerold (pictured left). Jonathan was a symbol of the people NYSARC supports. His father, Joseph, was the first NYSARC President and Executive Director, pioneered NY policy that shaped national policy, advanced the legal status of people with developmental disabilities, originated the concept of a separate state agency and was one of the primary founders of The Arc of the US. Four $3,000 awards are presented annually (one for each NYSARC region) to full-time employees who wish to further their education. Carol is pursuing her Master’s degree in Music Therapy at SUNY New Paltz to become a licensed therapist. Her goal is to incorporate her expertise and apply these techniques to the people she serves. Carol has been a dedicated, committed staff member since July 2006. She began her career as a Day Habilitation Assistant at our Clifton Park Day Program. After 2 years, she was promoted to Day Habilitation Instructor II. Carol has strong relationships with the participants, family members and interdisciplinary team members. She is caring, thoughtful and treats individuals with the highest level of respect. An exemplary role model, her co-workers speak highly of the passion and enthusiasm she brings to her job. Carol embodies the quintessential employee, uses her experiences to offer helpful suggestions and ultimately enhances lives. For instance, Carol created and coordinates a successful music group for the people who attend the Clifton Park Program. Direct Support Professionals Week Saratoga Bridges, along with the NYS Office of Persons With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), celebrated and recognized our dedicated employees during the week September 8-14.
