This season marks the first time the pair have been in the same league/level in the minors with one another as professionals. BACK IN ACTION: In yesterday’s season-opener, it was the first time thatJoey Marciano had appeared in a game in 657 days. He sat down all three batters he faced in the fifth inning, including a swinging strikeout to begin his outing. Marciano retired from baseball on July 17, 2019. He was reinstated in the Giants system on January 12, 2021. THE PEN IS MIGHTY: The Flying Squirrels pitching staff struck out nine total yard Goats, six of them coming from Richmond’s relievers. Trenton Toplikar led the bullpen with two strikeouts while Joey Marciano, Luis Amaya, Mac Marshall and Patrick Ruotolo all had one strikeout. Marciano, Marshall and Ruotolo each turned in scoreless outings in Tuesday’s season opener. QUIET IN THE MIDDLE: Yesterday, Hartford’s pitching staff held the Squirrels scoreless through seven consecutive innings from the second to the eighth. Richmond had a stretch of 13 straight batters retired while facing starter Ryan Rolison. The scor- ing drought ended for the Squirrels in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a two-RBI single from Andres Angulo. THE SAME BUT DIFFERENT: Prior to the 2021 season, Major League Baseball realigned its player development structure, elim- inating the Eastern League, which was the home of the Flying Squirrels for ten seasons. Under the new alignment, the Flying Squirrels play in the 12-team Double-A Northeast, which includes 11 of the former E.L. teams. The Somerset Patriots are the only new opponent on Richmond’s schedule this year.
