Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry Inspection

The Shagya-Arabian is quickly becoming the breed of choice for riders and equine enthusiasts in all disci- plines. It owes its noble qualities of devotion to its rider, a kind temperament, hardiness, size, athleticism, and jumping ability to a selective and dedicated breeding program and a history of rigorous perfor- mance testing.

The result? A rare and versatile equine partner equally at home in , endurance, show jumping, , harness and pleasure riding.

Page 2 What is a Shagya-Arabian?

Today’s Shagya-Arabian is a rare, but versatile sport equally at home at dressage, eventing, show jumping, hunting, endurance, harness, and pleasure riding.

The breed began in 1789 when the Hungarian military set out to develop a new breed of horse that combined the very best of Bedouin Arabians: elegance, endurance, hardiness, athleticism, temperament, and devotion to their rider, but with larger size, jumping ability, and riding ease to master the rigors and versatility of a horse. The intent of the program was to develop a superior horse that was equally at home under and in harness and that could be used to improve other breeds. So successful was the breeding program that the Hapsburg’s Imperial Guard in Vienna and the Royal Guard in Budapest were mounted on Shagya-Arabians, and Shagyas were the cavalry officer’s horse of choice.

The breed’s name comes from a magnificent Bedouin named Shagya, born in 1810, bred (from Kehilan and Slglavy strains) and raised by the Bani Saher stud in Babolna, . This magnificent stallion was renowned in his day not only for his perfect size, type, and movement, but also for his ability as a sire to pass on these qualities to his offspring. Today, virtually every Shagya-Arabian breeding line has his blood somewhere in it. Through time, elite desert bred Arabians were carefully added to the bloodlines, and English and Lippizaners were occasionally included in the breeding mix to

Page 3 Right from the outset, performance testing was regarded as essential. Both mares and were put through rigorous tests, including dressage, a 10- day 480 mile ride across plains, forests and mountains, 2-mile sprints, and long distance . Careful records were kept of the ’ jumping, speed, condition, and disposition. New stallions were rigorously progeny tested, including breeding to 30 mares a year for 3 years, the mares differing in quality. Ten were of low quality, ten of average quality, and ten high quality. The offspring were carefully reviewed by committee, and if any did not meet the standards, the entire group was sold off. Any mare or stallion that did not meeting the high standards were culled and sold at auction, ensuring that only high performance bloodlines were used in the breeding program.

The characteristics of the Shagya-Arabian are well established. The Shagya- Arabian should have the appearance of a beautiful, elegant, and harmonious riding horse with correctness of gaits and movements, who enjoys jumping and has good jumping ability, has pleasant rhythm and rideability, is trusting, good natured, and willing to learn, and has robust health, longevity, and fertility with stamina and frugality. Although there is no longer a military need for Shagya- Arabians, all the noble qualities the breed possesses, make it an ideal horse.

Page 4 The Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry INSPECTION: Description of Events

Inspection for Mares and Stallions, Shagya-Arabian or Arabian, consists of multiple, mandatory phases. These include the Veterinary Exam, submission of SCID and DNA results, In- and at Liberty presentation, Under Saddle/Rideability, Interior Test, and Free Jump. Additionally, Open Competition requirements in one of several disciplines must be completed and documented. Successful completion of these requirements results in PShR Licensing and placement in the PShR Studbooks per their performance and pedigree.

Evaluation of Geldings and Shagya Sporthorses, Shagya-Arabian or purebred Arabian, are evaluated rather than inspected. Evaluation includes the choice of one or all of the following tests: In-Hand and at Liberty presentation, Under Saddle/Rideability, Interior Test, and Free Jump. Successful completion of these tests results in certification. Veterinary Examination All mares and stallions seeking licensing and breeding approval must stand for the licensed veterinarian at the inspection site. The purpose of the exam is to look for anomalies, heart defects, existing faults of teeth or testicles, deficiencies or other conditions indicating genetic predisposition. The exam will include but is not limited to a flexion test and trot out on a hard surface. In-Hand and At Liberty Presentation Horses will be presented using the USDF Sporthorse In-Hand procedure. Horses will be shown on the triangle and at liberty in both directions of the ring. The horses should be clean and well behaved. Handlers should be appropriately dressed in conservative attire. Grooms will be allowed in the arena to help encourage the horse to move in a natural manner. The judges will evaluate the horse for ‘type’ and physical attributes of the head, neck, body and legs. On the triangle and/or at liberty, the judges will score the horse’s movement at the walk, trot and canter. Under Saddle/Rideability To complete the Under Saddle/Rideability test, horses four (4) years of age or older will be ridden at a walk, trot and canter in the discipline style of the riders' choice. Horses will be ridden both directions of the ring, complete a 20 meter circle and cross the diagonal of the ring. There is a cross rail to jump at the gait of the rider’s choice. If possible, two or three horses will work in the ring at one time. Mixing stallions with mares can be an exception. Two test riders will ride the horse and report to the judges their overall impression. Observations will include: Way of going and quality of the gait, overall impression, willingness to work, temperament/obedience. - continued-

Page 5 The Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry INSPECTION: Description of Events Continued

Interior Test The Interior Test is designed to determine the character and temperament of the horse in an unusual situa- tion. The horse will be scored on his willingness to walk beside the handler in an easily managed fashion. When directed by the judge, the handler and the horse enter the arena. The horse should be next to the handler with some slack in the lead. The space between the handler and horse should remain consistent. The horse should have a pleasant and interested attitude with a flat walk. Overly excited response to obsta- cles as well as complete non-interest in the presented course will result in lost points. Optimally the horse remains manageable and calm when unexpected stimuli occur and exhibits a trusting, good- natured be- havior.

Free Jumping Protocol The free jumping chute consists of 3 obstacles, in order: a simple cross-rail, a cross rail with a horizontal rail directly behind, and an oxer. The handler will first walk the horse into and alongside of the chute to allow him to see and become familiar with the chute set-up and jump elements. Evaluation criteria: When jumping a horse should look bold, confident and happy while displaying good jumping ability. Front legs should be tucked while the hind legs are open. The back should be well-arched (bascule) and elastic. The horse should be able to determine the appropriate take off and landing over the jump. Undesirable jump- ing technique include jumping without control, hanging forelegs, head too high, retracted hind legs and a stiff, straight or hollow back.

Branding of PShR Shagya-Arabians As per the ISG RZBO and the PShR ZBO (breeding guidelines) Shagya-Arabian horses (including foals) may be branded by the branding delegate on the left thigh with the breed specific “Shagya-Sun” brand. Any ex- ceptions must to be approved by ISG. To qualify for branding a Shagya-Arabian must have both a sire and dam belonging to Books I or II. Branding is a birthright of legitimate, purebred offspring; it does not de- pend on inspection or performance testing.

Page 6 Judit Erzsébet Kovács PShR Inspection Judge

Judit’s choice of profession was determined by her fascination towards riding and horses. She was graduated from the Agricultural University of Gödöllő as a certified engineer in agriculture with specialty in animal breeding biotechnology. Soon after the university years she also was educated as a horse riding instructor. At that time she had already had her first junior horse, a two-year-old unridden mare of the Hungarian breed Furioso of Mezőhegyes, whom she rode in herself. At the end of the ’90s she was able to live her dream: she got a job in the Arabian Stud of Bábolna as a stud-book keeper engineer and she also worked for the Society of Hungarian Breeders, where she was a member of the Breeding Committee. After some reorganization and personal changes in Bábolna she left the stud, and moved to County Tolna, where she became an animal breeding inspector at the County Office of the Hungarian Agricultural Ministry. Between the years 2003-2016 she led the County Office of the Agricultural and Rural Development Agency (Hungarian paying agency for agricultural subsidies financed by the European Union.) Also during these years she kept in touch with the Hungarian Arabian Horse Breeders Society: she was asked to judge at stallion examinations in Bábolna first time in 2001 and since then almost every year. She completed the ISG international judge course in 2006 after which she was invited to judge Shagya horses in , Switzerland and at international shows in Hungary. She considers it a great honour that together with dr Walter Huber she had already judged for the PShR at the inspection-tour in the US in 2015 and with Marie Johnson in 2017. She currently resides in SW-Hungary, in County Tolna with her horses. She still has her horses who are now 29 and 24 years old and already in pension. They are family members for their life-time. Judit found a new activity for them, by joining the topics of horses, coaching and leadership: with the assistance of her horses she supports leaders to develop their potential by experiential learning with horses.

Carin Weiss and some of her Shagya-Arabian mares - taken a few years ago. The bay one is THIRZA - (Sulayman x Thaya of Shagya XXIX-11) dam of BASYL and THASSIA, and the white one on the right hand side is TARKA, dam of BATYA (Artaxerxes x Thyra of Ghazzir). I started with vaulting and riding in a riding school, learning a lot about dressage, jumping and eventing. Beside high school I trained young and some difficult horses and fell in love to noble horses. I learned to ride them "long and slow" and to keep them as natural as possible. After finishing school I started a career as IT consultant to earn enough money to bye my own horses and my own farm. My first horse was a mare by BAJAR whom I took part at a number of endurance races. The next horse was our later foundation mare TOBROK-62, who participated in endurance up to 100 km and had 6 foals. Until today we have more than 30 offspring after her and more than 50 Shagya-Arabian foals in total. After 20 years of IT consultance I took a professional education in horse keeping and breeding and got the permission to educate young professionals. Since the 1980's I'm member of ISG, was member of ISG board for a few years and since almost 15 years I'm judging Shagya-Arabians in and other European countries.

Two words best describe this lovely stallion, SAR Tiki Rock On, tough and well minded. He demonstrated these attributes during his endurance career, during his recovery from a catastrophic injury, and is again showing us his lovely nature while competing in his new career of Equine Trail Sports Competition.

Born and bred at Sabiq Arabian Ranch in Prineville, Oregon, Rock is part of a long line of successful SAR endurance horses all sired by Hy Tiki, grandson to Kontiki, the only Arabian ever inducted into the Hall of Fame. During his 4 year endurance career he boasted 24 starts and 23 finishes and a 3 for 3 completion record in 100-miles races that included The Tevis Cup. Competitors were consistently surprised to learn that he was a stallion; in camp and on trail he was always a true gentleman.

Sadly, in 2015 Rock suffered a fractured shoulder in a pasture accident. Despite serious concern for his survivability, he showed his tenacious spirit and gradually recovered and received clearance to return to light work and breeding. Throughout Rock’s injury and year-long confinement he was always a cheerful and good hearted patient.

Today Rock competes in Equine Trail Sports Competitions where he showcases his mental aptitude and continues to impress people with his calm disposition and impeccable manners . Thus far his babies have inherited his disposition and we look forward to many more baby Rocks growing up around the country.

Hadbans National Anthem "Salute" was a 2 year old colt when I first found him. He is by *Hadban USA, a Shagya-Arabian stallion that has been successful in the endurance discipline, and Mattingley Freedom, a part-Shagya-mare with the nicest temperament I have ever found. Salute is everything I was hoping to find in a stallion prospect - potential for endurance, potential for dressage, love for the human-partnership, the calm, easy -going Shagya temperament, toughness, and personality. I look forward to an endurance career with him. He is three years old this year, and I can't wait to continue his training.

Page 12 RAA’s Perry Owned and Presented by Andrew & Holly Haddenham

Perry shows the best of the Shagya -Arabian traits that we have come to know and love. During our time together we have traveled to endurance races, done local shows, participated in parades and gone camping more times then we can count. Perry is the mother to three beautiful daughters, Luna, Perfect and Phoxy. We look forward to all of our future adventures together.

Page 34 Functions of the ISG

The ISG’s aim is the coordination of the Shagya Arab breeding in the participating countries concerning the aims of breeding, the preservation of the clean breed and the support of the Shagya Arab. ISG represents the interests of Shagya Arab breeding internationally ISG draws up guidelines regarding the stud books for its members. All national stud books need to be accepted by the ISG. The ISG has different types of members:

• National networks or stud farms, writing their own stud book or offering a special department for stud books for Shagya Arabs.

• Individual breeders with a voting right and personal members of countries without a representative office. Maximum membership is 5 years.

• Supportive members (Members supporting the ISG without a right to vote) Every year, the ISG organizes a meeting of delegates, where next to delegates of the national networks and stud farms, also individual breeders and supportive members are invited. Moreover every second year an ISG European championship for Shagya Arabs is arranged by a national network and financially supported by the ISG. The ISG carries out judgement training courses and seminars for judges. Furthermore the ISG offers a list of official judges to organizers of shows. National networks usually face following tasks:

• Approval of stallions and mares

• Placement of suitable breeding horses

• Taking stock of the whole Shagya Arab population

• Setting regulations concerning the stud books for the clean breed of Shagya Arabs accepted by the ISG

• Representing the interests of its members in national and international networks and boards

• Keeping an organized stud book

• Carrying out breeding shows, exhibitions and performance tests

• Answering questions of its members regarding breeding and keeping Shagya Arabs

• Arranging training courses and sports events http://shagya-isg.com/index.php?home
