Dear friends,

Welcome to the group phase of the EHF European League Women’s inaugural season.

Following a thrilling Women’s EHF EURO 2020 in Denmark, where Norway came out on top to claim their eighth European gold medal, a number of the players who starred at the championship have switched their attention back to club matters and the group phase, beginning on the weekend of 9 and 10 January 2021.

Divided over four groups, 16 teams will strive for a place in the quarter-final of the newly formed competition, which has replaced the Women’s EHF Cup this season.

The group phase will be concluded with round 6 on 20/21 February. The two best-ranked teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals in late March and early April.

With many big-name clubs on the starting grid for the competition’s first group phase, one of the intriguing prospects is that three of the four groups include a duel between teams from Russia and France.

In group A, former EHF Champions League winners HC Zvezda will face Paris 92, with Danish side Herning-Ikast Håndbold and Váci NKSE from completing the line-up.

Handball Club Lada are headlining group B and will take on Nantes Atlantique Handball, while they are joined by Kastamonu Belediyesi GSK from Turkey and former EHF Champions League contenders MKS Perla Lublin from Poland.

And in group D, Kuban are up against Fleury Loiret Handball, while Siófok KC - the Hungarian winners of the EHF Cup 2018/19 - and Romanian side H.C. Dunarea Braila will also battle for a quarter-final berth.

There is only one group without Russian-French duel, however, group C also includes a team from Russia as former EHF Champions League participants Astrakhanochka are set to take on two other teams that featured in Europe’s top flight recently - ’s CS Minaur Baia Mare from Romania and ’s Thüringer HC - as well as Storhamar Handball Elite from Norway.

One of the encouraging aspects of the season so far has been the professional and sensible way the handball community has dealt with the challenging circumstances of the current pandemic.

From the European Handball Federation’s perspective, clubs, players and staff, and federations deserve huge amounts of credit for the ways in which they have conducted themselves; placing measures and following instructions to ensure matches at the highest level of handball going ahead.

Even in this difficult time with necessary restrictions on the events, we, together with clubs and our partners, will make sure that the EHF European League Women will be seen, followed, heard and talked about.
